Inspiring children to be mindful thinkers.

A note to parents and teachers:

While children of all ages can take valuable lessons away

from this book, it was written primarily with younger readers in mind.

As such, the some of the concepts and words presented may require an older and wiser presence (namely, yours) to help advance your child’s understanding.

As you read this book with them, you will find some supplemental questions to promote discussions on the

various situations depicted throughout the pages.

I sincerely hope that Your Alternate Me will help set your child on the path to becoming a mindful thinker!

ALTERNATE

To take the place of another.

I AM.

Two words you use all the time.

They help describe your attitudes.

Your attitudes are the ways

you think about yourself

and everything around you.

For example…

Your friend came over to your house.

You never let him choose a game

that he wanted to play.

Your attitude says

I AM SELFISH.

Try to remember the last time someone didn’t take turns or share with you…

How did that make you feel?

How do you think they would feel if you did that to them?

Would they want to play with you again?

You see some kids teasing someone at recess.

You make them stop.

Your attitude says

I AM COURAGEOUS.

Maybe you surprised yourself

by suddenly doing or saying something

(good or bad)

that you did not think was really you.

Maybe it felt (if only for a moment)

like someone else had taken your place.

It is during those moments that you

became aware of

your Alternate Me.

Your Alternate Me is the link between

you and your attitudes.

I AM ________.

I AM HONEST.

I AM UNTRUSTWORTHY.

I AM GRATEFUL.

I AM SPOILED.

I AM RESPONSIBLE.

I AM CARELESS.

I AM CARING.

I AM HATEFUL.

Which of these attitudes have you demonstrated?

When you walk into a room,

your Alternate Me

can tell everyone who you are…

I AM GRUMPY.

…without you having to speak a single word.

I AM CHEERFUL.

When you walked through your school doors today, what mood were you in?

When you are around others,

your Alternate Me can

make someone’s day better…

I AM POLITE.

The next time you have the chance,

do something nice for someone—no matter how small—without them asking.

How does it make you feel?

…or worse.

I AM RUDE.

In whatever you do,

your Alternate Me can

lift you up…

I AM A WINNER.

…or drag you down.

I AM A LOSER.

How can losing or failing at something end up being helpful to you?

As the voice in your head,

your Alternate Me

I AM POSITIVE.

is always speaking to you.

I AM NEGATIVE.

Your Alternate Me tells you

what you can do.

I AM ABLE.

And it tells you

what you can’t do.

I AM HELPLESS.

Sometimes as a squeak.

I AM TIMID.

Even if you know the answer, what keeps you from raising your hand?

How many of your classmates do you think feel the same way as you?

Sometimes as a roar.

I AM CONFIDENT.

If you are not careful,

you could let your Alternate Me

repeat the wrong attitudes in your head.

I AM JEALOUS. I AM A POOR SPORT.

When someone else does something better than you,

how does it make you feel?

Would you feel the same if that person is your friend?

Attitudes that will only make you

and everyone else around you

really unhappy.

I AM MEAN.

But always remember,

your Alternate Me

listens to you too.

So be thoughtful of what you tell it.

Although we wish we could,

we can’t always keep bad things

from happening to us.

So when they do,

what will your Alternate Me hear you say?

For example…

“What others say about me

is more important

than what I think about myself.”

I AM SMALL.

“What I think about myself

is more important

than what others say about me.”

OR…

I AM SUPER.

Let your thoughts have more power than their words.

And while it can be hard

to get your Alternate Me to do better…

…you will always be better when you do.

I AM AWESOME.

Because in the end,

your Alternate Me is still you.

I AM IN CHARGE

OF WHAT I THINK, SAY AND DO.

And you get to decide who you are…

…always.

I AM.

Your Alternate Me

Have you ever surprised yourself by saying or doing something suddenly and unexpectedly? As if someone else had but for just a moment taken your place? That brief moment revealed the hidden side of you--your Alternate Me. Also known as the voice in your head, your inner critic, and your other self, your Alternate Me is your constant companion, lifting you up or dragging you down, causing you to make someone's day or ruin it, or telling you that you can or that you can't. The question to ask yourself is, will you always allow it to lead you, or will you take charge? Your Alternate Me helps children conceptualize the various thoughts occupying their minds--collectively known as attitudes--which, in turn, influence how they feel and act. This high-level concept is distilled into a children's book featuring simply-worded sentences, fun illustrations, and thought-provoking discussion questions. Your Alternate Me sets young readers on the path to becoming more mindful thinkers.
