A Memorial to Her – Mark 14:9

And with Special Thanks to

In the Holy Bible are found a multitude of statements preceded by three words – the day of. Some of these have great importance for humanity such as, the day of the Lord, the day of Judgment and [_the day of Salvation. _]There is one, however, that is missed, that has application for those living in the last days.

“Because _]_who has despised _[_the day of small things[?_][ Because they will rejoice, and will see the (Urim-Thummim) stone in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven eyes; they are the eyes of YHWH that run to and fro throughout the whole earth.” Zechariah 4:10 (UTV)_]

The Urim Thummim (UT) of course was a “small thing” that was hidden behind the breastplate of the high priest. And what was hidden in Old Testament times, was to be revealed to the world, before the Second Advent of Christ, and its unveiling first comes by understanding some key words in the NewTestament. In Romans 16:25 it talks about “the revelation of the mystery”. Our English word mystery has actually “hidden” the meaning of this great revelation! The prime meaning of that word in the Greek is [_“hidden thing”. _]And if we let the Bible interpret itself we discover that the only “thing” that was “hidden” in the Old Testament was the Urim Thummim. So this verse actually reads, “the revelation of the hidden thing”. This verse then clearly means “the revelation (laying bear, making naked) or exposing the Urim Thummim”. This is also clarified in Colossians 1:26.

“Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:” Colossians 1:26,27 (KJV)

“Even the Hidden Thing [Urim-Thummim] that has been concealed from the ages and from generations, but now is exposed to view for his saints: 1:27 To whom Elohim would make known what is the riches of the glory of this Hidden Thing [Urim-Thummim] among the Gentiles; which is CHRIST IN YOU, THE HOPE OF GLORY: Colossians 1:26,27 (UTV)

Chapter One

The Day of Small Things

[“Who are you, O great mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become the Level Place: and _]he will bring out the (Urim-Thummim) stone with clamoring, shouting, grace, grace unto it.”[ Zechariah 4:7 (UTV)_]

As I wrote in my Foreword we have the Urim Thummim exposed from a hidden state for the world to see. When this happens some of the saints will be shouting “grace, grace unto it”. That statement of itself sounds almost idolatrous because who could shout that to a thing? But if that “thing” was something Elohim had himself “engraved” upon, then as Scripture indicates, it would be allowed that shout. Remember that images were permitted as decorations within the temple of YHWH. These were divine exceptions to the rule, made by Elohim Himself.

As the title of the ebook shows, there is a question in front of the coming “Day of Small Things”. Who will despise that day? Apparently there is controversy among the saints concerning this holy object. Some may think these things are part of what was “done away” under Moses while others may realize that this holy object was not listed among the things constructed for the Tabernacle. Indeed many Christians do not realize that the covenant of Life and Peace in the book of Malachi was a different covenant than the Mosaic Covenant pertaining to the priesthood. Furthermore most Christians would not realize that the priesthood was transferred from Moses to Christ who now heads the Melchizadek priesthood, which now includes the Levites as well as others chosen by Christ for that service.

The coming Day of Small Things will precede the [_Day of the Lord _]as a chosen remnant of believers will not be subjected to the indignation to come.

“Seek YHWH, all you poor of the earth that have done his judgment; seek righteousness, seek humility: it may be you will be hidden in the day of YHWH’s anger.” Zephaniah 2:3 (UTV)

“Come my people, enter you into your chambers, and shut your doors about you: hide yourself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation is pasted over. _][_26:21 For lo, YHWH comes out of his Standing Place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their depravity: the earth also will disclose her blood, and will no more cover her slain.” Isaiah 26:20,21 (UTV)

“A supernatural fire devours before them; and behind them a flame burns: the land is as the Garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yes, and nothing will escape them.” Joel 2:3 (UTV)

“Without me they will prostrate among the prisoners, and they will fall under the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.” Isaiah 10:4 (UTV)

Chapter Two

The Covenant of Levi – The First Report

One of the greatest mistakes has been to equate the Old Covenant for Israel with the specific covenant given to the tribe of Levi! I received a newsletter from the “Foundation for Intercession” dated August 1998. On the second to last page under the subsection, “A New Priesthood Coming” we read,

“Many have correctly taught that God is raising up a new type of priesthood. Hebrews 5:6 quotes Psalm 110:4 calling it ‘the order of Melchisedec.’ Unlike the Levitical priesthood of the Mosaic order, it is not based upon one’s genealogical qualification as a direct descendant of Levi or Aaron. It is instead a priesthood of the Over-comers (Rev.5:10; 20:6).”

While this statement is true in that the Melchisedec priesthood is a different priesthood, it is erroneous to think of the Old Covenant and the Covenant of Levi as the same, or that genealogical qualifications cannot exist for separate Covenant requirements.

“And ye shall know that I have sent this commandment unto you, THAT MY COVENANT MIGHT BE WITH LEVI, saith the Lord of hosts. My covenant was with him of life and peace; and I gave them to him for the fear wherein he feared me, and was afraid before my name.” Malachi 2:4,5 (KJV)

This specific covenant was made with the tribe of Levi after Phineas, a descendant of Aaron, did a righteous act that prevented God from consuming the entire nation of Israel.

“And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Phineas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy. Wherefore say, BEHOLD, I GIVE UNTO HIM MY COVENANT OF PEACE: And he shall have it, and his seed after him, even the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was zealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.” Numbers 25:10-13 (KJV)

This was a different covenant than the one made at mount Sinai, based on what God had given Moses. This “new” covenant was given as a result of a righteous act by Phineas. Notice how this tribe of Levi had been establishing a pattern of behavior that was very pleasing to God.

“Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Who is on the Lord’s side? let him come unto me. And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together unto him. And he said unto them, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side, and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbour. And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses: and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men.” Exodus 32:26-28 (KJV) (see also Deut.33:8-11)

The “Life and Peace” Covenant of Numbers and Malachi was a specific and separate Covenant made ONLY to one tribe. This covenant however seems to have been blended into the one made at mount Sinai under different terms, but this is INCORRECT. And while the Old Covenant has been replaced with the New Covenant, we find no replacement or cancellation of the specific covenant made with the tribe of Levi. In fact that “new covenant” was very much a forerunner of the larger New Covenant based on better promises. And this is exactly what we find in a careful reading of the book of Malachi, which deals largely with prophecies of an end-time Elijah figure. In Malachi 3:3 we find that God “purifies” the sons of Levi again for service and in verse four we read,

“Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the Lord, as in the days of old, and as in former years.” Malachi 3:4 (KJV)

The most central fact in dealing with this whole subject is to remember and distinguish that we have three covenants to keep in mind, the Old and New Covenants and the Covenant of Life and Peace. The Levitical priesthood in Old Testament times operated under the rules and regulations of the Mosaic Covenant. But NOW, at the end of the age, before the Second Advent of Christ, we find God again renewing the Levitical covenant of life and peace under the operation of Melchizedek rather than the Mosaic dispensation!

“ Because the Priesthood being transferred, there appears in history a necessity of transfer also of the Law.” Hebrews 7:12 (UTV)

One can now begin to see that the “priesthood” and “covenant of life and peace” are also two separate entities. The former Levitical priesthood was Mosaic in character while the new Levitical priesthood (revived under a different covenant) is a Melchizedek priesthood with Jesus Christ as its Head. The specific covenant awarded to the tribe of Levi was not based on Law keeping. This new priesthood (according to Malachi) begins with the tribe of Levi but is not limited to only members of that tribe. If one is in the Melchizedek priesthood the Covenant of Life and Peace only pertains to him if he is of Levitical descent. All Christians can now be resurrected at the Second Advent as Kings and Priests under the Melchizedek priesthood of Christ (which of itself has no tribal requirements).

“And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth” Revelation 5:10 (KJV)

Concerning the book of Malachi we find “Elijah” both at the beginning and end of the story. Notice first what “Who’s Who in the Bible”, page 256 says about the prophet Malachi,

“Malachi – (Heb. My messenger) c. middle of 5 century BC. Post-exilic Hebrew prophet. It is generally considered that Malachi is not a name, but a Hebrew word meaning ‘my messenger’. It is taken from the sentence in the text Mal.3:1.”

And that messenger is named of course at the end of Malachi as Elijah. One thing worth mentioning is that this book of the Bible has in it the Spirit of Elijah from beginning to end! We even find that God challenges anyone TODAY to see if they will not be blessed if they give tithes and offerings to the Levites within the Melchizedek priesthood.

“Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the window of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.” Malachi 3:10 (KJV)

But THIS tithe and offering is NOT Mosaic in character but is the tithe and offering given by our father Abraham to Melchizedek…

“…And he gave him tithes of all.” Genesis 14:20 (KJV)

What has been presented so far is the Biblical evidence of the RENEWED PRIESTHOOD, which an Elijah figure will establish at the end of this age before the return of Christ. One should read the entire book of Malachi in a context of the end-time. God uses events of history to show us future prophecy. There is however much supporting evidence to the Biblical text found in the Dead Sea Scrolls (DDS). These scrolls center very much on an Elijah figure and the Levites in particular. They support the Biblical text and may very well give many specific details. The following are quotes from “The Dead Sea Scrolls – A New Translation” by Wise, Abegg and Cook (Harper Collins). I would recommend this book for continued study. The word “Yahad” is used by the authors of the book to denote this special group of people and the word means “unity”. Note that emphasis is mine throughout these quotes.

“1Qsa, 1Q28a…Col. 1 This is the rule for all the congregation of Israel in the Last Days, when they are mobilized [to join the Yahad. They must l]ive by the law of SONS OF ZADOK, THE PRIESTS, and the men of THEIR COVENANT, they who ce[eased to walk in the w]ay of the people. These are the men of HIS COUNCIL who kept HIS COVENANT during evil times, and so aton[ed for the lan]d…” pages 143-145

Notice how much this accords with the book of Malachi! This group lives by the rules of the Sons of Zadok, the Priests and THEIR COVENANT! This is the Covenant of Life and Peace given by God to the Levites and this is for the “last days”.

“Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord:” Malachi 4:5 (KJV)

This is the authorized authority God establishes in the last days, it originates from the Covenant of Life and Peace given to the Levites, rather than from the Jewish authority of any current “Beit Din”. Jesus Christ has been given the “Key of David” which He will administer under the hands of His chosen Levites at the end of this age. The Elijah to come will be a special commissioned prophet of Levitical descent. This is a very important point for Believers to consider.

“1Q28b,1QSb…Col. 3 May the Lord lift up His countenance upon you” (Num,6:26); [may he delight in] the savor [of YOUR SACRIFICES]. MAY HE CHOOSE ALL WHO ABIDE IN [YOUR] PRIES[THOOD]….MAY HE ] SANCTIFY YOUR DESCENDANTS…Words of blessing belonging to the Inst[ructor, by which to bless] the SONS OF ZADOK, THE PRIESTS, chosen by God to uphold His covenant for[ever, to pr]ove His precepts among His people, and to teach them as He commanded…[MAY HE RE]NEW FOR YOU THE [ETERNAL] COVENANT OF HIS PRIESTHOOD…MAY HE BLESS ALL MORTAL COUNSEL BY YOUR HAND! Col. 4 […For] He has chosen you […] and to place you at the HEAD of the Holy Ones and with you to bl[ess…] by your hand the men of God’s society, RATHER THAN BY THE HAND OF A PRINCE…Col. 5 […F]OR HE HAS ORDAINED YOU TO THE PRIESTHOOD…MAY] GOD [PUT] THE FEAR OF YOU [UPON] ALL WHO HEAR A REPORT OF YOU, AND OF YOUR MAJESTY [UPON ALL WHO…]…AND HE SHALL RENEW FOR HIM THE COVENANT OF THE [ASS]OCIATION, SO AS TO ESTABLISH THE KINGDOM OF HIS PEOPLE…”. Pages 147-149

Take note here that end-time authority is not given to a prince which would be of the Davidic line, but instead Christ, administers His Davidic line through the tribe of Levi! It is these “descendants” who are set apart for Divine Service. Continuing with more DDS supporting evidence for the book of Malachi.

“4Q164…[th]at they founded the society of the Yahad on the priests, and the […] company of his chosen, like the sapphire among the stones […]…” Page 213

“4Q175…Col. 1…And of Levi he said: Give to Levi Your Thummim, and your Urim to your loyal one, whom You tested at Massah…” Page 230

Here again is the tribe of Levi which is spoken of in the book of Malachi!

“Mt. Athos MS… And he said to me: LEVI, , TO YOU AND TO YOUR DESCENDANTS THE PRIESTHOOD IS GIVEN, to serve the Most High in the midst of the land and to atone for the sins of the land. THEN HE GAVE THE BLESSINGS OF THE PRIESTHOOD…” Page 252

Here is absolutely supporting Biblical evidence of the Melchizedek priesthood!

“Col. 56 […You shall go to the priests, LEVITES] °r ju[dges in office]and inquire of them…You must act according to the Law that they proclaim to you, in keeping with the decision that they render you from the book of the Law…” Page 484

This shows the authority God gives this end-time priesthood.

“Col. 60…TO THE LEVITES BELONG THE TITHE…”Page 487 (compare this with Malachi 3:8-10)

Tithes and offerings are to be given to the Levites, they are the only ones who have been given authority to take the tithes and offerings.

“1QS,4Q255-264a,5Q11…Col. 9…At that time the men of the Yahad shall withdraw, the HOLY HOUSE OF AARON uniting as a Holy of Holies, and the synagogue of Israel as those who walk blamelessly. THE SONS OF AARON ALONE SHALL HAVE AUTHORITY IN JUDICAL AND FINANCIAL MATTERS. THEY SHALL DECIDE ON GOVERNING PRECEPTS FOR THE MEN OF THE YAHAD AND ON MONEY MATTERS FOR THE HOLY MEN WHO WALK BLAMELESSLY…They shall govern themselves using the original precepts by which the men of the Yahad began to be instructed , doing so until there come THE PROPHET and THE MESSIAHS of AARON and ISRAEL…” Page 139

All of these writings from the DDS back the account of the book of Malachi to the dotting of the eye and crossing of the tee. These were no doubt prophecies given by Believers intended for the last days and support the Divine Word of God.

The Priesthood to last as long as day and night existed,

“This is what YHWH declares; If you can break my Covenant of the day, and my Covenant of the night, and that there should not be day and night in their season; 33:21 Then may also my Covenant be broken with David my slave so that he should not have a son to reign on his throne; and with the Levites the priests, my ministers.” Jeremiah 33:20, 21 (UTV) [So we see it evident that divine authority has been maintained throughout the ages from Moses to Christ.]

Chapter Three

Discovery of the Urim Thummim

“And the governor said to them that they should not eat from the most holy things until a priest stood up with Urim and Thummim.” Ezra 2:63 (NAS)

The written information presented here is one of the most profound Biblical discoveries of our modern age, and it is with deep pleasure that I present this very good news to the world. What I am going to show and prove from within the Holy Scriptures themselves is that I have not only identified the Urim-Thummin, but I have this object in my very possession! Anyone who has surveyed this subject will know that the majority of scholarly opinion has no clue what the Urim-Thummin (UT) is. Most have speculated that the UT were two objects which were cast as lots, but the excellent and all exhaustive book, “The Urim and Thummim – A Means of Revelation in Ancient Israel” by Cornelis Van Dam [ISBN 0-931464-83-8], shows the weight of the evidence favors it as one object. A summary quote on page 230 informs us,

“According to my theory and interpretation of the biblical evidence respecting the identity of the UT, the UT probably consisted of a single gem, and the name can best be understood as ‘perfect light’. A miraculous light verified that the message given by the high priest was indeed from God. Teraphim may have involved light divination and thus have been an attractive surrogate UT (and an analogous ancient Near Eastern divinatory method).”

Our first encounter with the UT is in Exodus where we are told this object is to be put “in the breastplate” of the High Priest. The Ephod (Ex.28:4), which we will discuss later, was a type of “waistcoat” which had a front and back to it (without sleeves) and tied with a strap at the waist. It was over this garment that the breastplate of the High Priest was attached.

“And thou shalt put in the breastplate of judgment the Urim and the Thummim; and they shall be upon Aaron’s heart, when he goeth in before the LORD: and Aaron shall bear the judgment of the children of Israel upon his heart before the LORD continually.” Exodus 28:30 (KJV)

We must take note that the UT had to be a small object to fit inside the breastplate of the High Priest. All the objects of clothing for the priesthood are described and identified in Scripture, except for the UT. When we consult the Masoretic Text of the original Bible there is a noteworthy absence of the UT, or its fabrication. E.W. Bullinger confirms this in his note on Exodus 28:30 in his “Companion Bible” which reads in part,

“30 Urim and Thummim. No command of God to make these. Only told to put (nathan, to give) them in the breastplate, i.e. into the bag of the breastplate (cp.v.26 and 16, also ch.39.9 and 19).”

So far (at this point), it can be known that the UT was a small object, and that it was not made with all the other items for the priesthood. The next point to study is why this UT is described using two terms. The basic definition of the word Urim is “lights”, and Thummim is defined as “perfections” (see Thayer BDB). In the Septuagint (LXX) of Ezra and Nehemiah, a most literal definition for Urim arises from the particle form of “photizo” meaning to shine or give light. Both of these words are in the plural form that has been the cause of conjecture over being two objects instead of one. There is another explanation to this that will unite with all the internal Biblical evidence I am going to present. This is simply that the UT is one object but that it has a plurality to it, such as a stone and metal object. James Strong further discusses the concept of a single oracle,

“The plural form of both words does not necessarily imply that there were many of each kind of object, nor even that the two were distinct articles; but rather according to a frequent Hebrew idiom, these peculiarities of the phrase express as follows: emphasis or quantity; and the duplication, attribution or quality. Thus a free translation would be full light as to amount and perfect as to kind, i.e., complete illumination; in modern terminology, a definite oracle…” [The Tabernacle of Israel – Its Structure and Symbolism (Kregal) by James Strong, pp.110-111]

The UT could well be described as intensive plurals and can thus be translated with a singular meaning (see Ezekiel 19:11). This would apply itself quite well to objects that are connected with the office of the High Priest. This is all summed up very well when we consider these two words as a case of hendiadys. Note what Webster’s Dictionary (Second Edition) says of the definition of a hendiadys,

“hendiadys – n.Gram. Expression of an idea by two nouns connected by and, instead of by a noun and an adjunct (we drink from cups and gold, for golden cups).”

What we find when this is taken into consideration is that UT quite clearly gives the meaning of “perfect light”, “perfect illumination” or “unerrable revelation”. We also have an error in the Septuagint text for I Samuel 14:41 when compared with the Masoretic text where MT separates the casting of lots with the UT, and the LXX confuses both as the same. Note clearly the differences,

“Then Saul said, ‘O Lord, God of Israel, why have you not answered your servant this day? If the guilt is in me or in Jonathan my son, O Lord, God of Israel, give Urim; and if you indicate that it is in the people of Israel, give Thummim.’ And Jonathan and Saul were taken, but the people escaped.” I Sam14:41 (LXX)

“Then Saul ‘said to all Israel, ‘You shall be on one side, and I and Jonathan my son shall be on the other side.’ And the people said to Saul, ‘Do what seems good to you.’ Then Saul said to Yahweh, ‘O God of Israel, give truth.’ And Jonathan and Saul were taken by lot but the people were escaped. Then Saul said, ‘Cast the lot between me and my son Jonathan,’ And Jonathan was taken.,” I Samuel 14“40-42 (MT)

It is stated in the Scriptures, concerning this account, that God did not answer Saul by the UT that day (verse 37), so Saul resorted to the casting of lots instead. The casting of lots (see Lev.16:8) should always be viewed as distinct from the function of the UT. While the use of lots can only give a yes or no answer, we find one instance when the UT was consulted where a whole conversation took place.

“And it came to pass after this, that David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the LORD said unto him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron.” II Samuel 2:1 (KJV)

This inquiry was clearly by UT as the casting of lots could not yield such a detailed answer as is accounted in this verse. Another point is that the term “teraphim” has been used in the Bible to describe an illegitimate UT (in association with an Ephod) such as in Judges 17:5. The context however in Hosea 3:4.5 shows that this teraphim is the authorized UT again making its appearance in the last days after many centuries of being absent.

“For the children of Israel shall abide many days without a king, and without a prince, and without a sacrifice, and without an image, and without an ephod, and without teraphim: 3:5 Afterward shall the children of Israel return, and seek the LORD their God, and David their king; and shall fear the LORD and his goodness in the latter days.” Hosea 3:4,5 (KJV)

This is very interesting because the illegitimate UT were called teraphim which is understood as an image, in other words, one object as opposite to two. This is another confirmation that the UT was a singular object. According to the Creator God any substitute for the one and only UT were put into the class of objects forbidden, such as the idols of the heathen. The Bible however always tells us the Truth on any given subject, and both the UT and teraphim were the same class of objects, both served as oracles but only the UT had divine approval attributed to it. In Fausset’s Bible Dictionary under the heading of Teraphim we read, “The Syriac teraph means ‘to inquire of an oracle’.” The Bible of course informs us that any duplication of the UT would fall into the category of divination that was strictly forbidden of God (compare Deut.18:10 with Eze.13:7).

We are now reaching a point in this study that the identifying factors that are currently known are reaching an end, but there is more, much more to be revealed from within the Biblical record that has been overlooked for centuries!. The next item to explore is whether the UT was a gemstone. Augustine, in Quaestiones Exodi 117 comments “it was a stone whose colour would change…” and Innocent III wrote, “Now this was called the breast-piece of judgment because a stone was there by whose splendor they discerned that God was merciful to them”. Calvin in his sermon on I Samuel 28:1-7 said,

“…the Urim was a conspicuous stone in the priestly dress, brilliant with a certain extraordinary light as even the word itself, which means brilliance, makes known. And this brightness of the stone was a sign of the prophecy to be received as necessity required, just as when God himself flashes in darkness in whom alone is all perfection and completeness.”

The Dead Sea Scrolls also suggest this stone may have been an agate in a commentary on Isa.54:11,12,

“I will make as agate all your pinnacles” (4QpIsad)

Now we come to the Scripture that has been overlooked for centuries which gives us a detailed description of the UT.

“For behold the stone that I have laid before Joshua; upon one stone shall be seven eyes: behold, I will engrave the graving thereof, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day.” Zechariah 3:9 (KJV)

The very first identifying feature is that this is ONE STONE, not two or twelve, and the second factor is that on this stone is a (metal) engraving. And the third factor is having this engraved by the Lord of hosts Himself! This last point ties in perfectly with the omission of the UT being fabricated by the Israelites. This combination of metal and stone also accounts for the plurality factor of this one priestly oracle. It has been misleading in the King James Version to translate “plummet” in Zech.4:10, instead of using the same word “stone” as used in Zechariah 3:9. Both are the exact same original Hebrew word (Strongs #068) and both are speaking of the UT!

“For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet (stone) in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro through the whole earth.” Zechariah 4:10 (KJV)

It is also noteworthy that in the original 1611 Edition of the King James Version we have a note from the translators for the plummet of verse 10 which says,

“Heb. stone of tinne”

Here we have the idea of a stone with metal, of course the misleading fact here of the plummet imagery which has completely blinded the eyes to the proper identity of the UT in the pages of the Holy Scriptures!

At the beginning of this study I said that I believe I am in possession of this UT. The object I have is a red banded agate or chalcedony (blood red with a touch of blue). It is approximately two by two and one half centimeters diameter, and is in the shape of a flat oval. Its height from base to top is about three centimeters and on top of this stone is a gold base on which stand a couchant Lion, a Serpent and a Tree. There are a total of seven eyes engraved on this object, two eyes of the Lion, two on the Tree and three on the Serpent and all of this is wrought in pure gold which was verified by acid testing. The two eyes of the Lion are made of garnets or possibly another gemstone and shine with a flashing brightness when put to light. Whether by coincidence or design, I don’t know which, the strata of the stone shows a perfectly clear number seven. The engraving work is of exceptional beauty and this whole design fits the description perfectly in Zechariah. The choice of symbols is also of prime importance here. The Lion is the tribal emblem of the tribe of Judah, and is usually shown in a couchant position. Note what W.H.Bennett says in his book, “Symbols of our Celto-Saxon Heritage”, page 79,.

“…the emblem of the tribe of Judah was a Lion, usually shown in a couchant position…it is interesting to note that the Jewish people still retain in their heraldry a rampant Lion.”

The Tree symbol can either represent the Tree of Life or other BRANCH symbolism found in other parts of the Divine Word, and the Serpent of course is a symbol of Satan the Devil. Thus this object presents us with a perfect imagery that is mentioned in the Dead Sea Scrolls as the Sons of Light and the Sons of Darkness, the classic good and evil. The seven eyes of course can refer to the seven eyes of the Lord that can also be the seven angels of the seven churches in the last days. Even in “The International Standard Bible Encyclopaedia” under the article on UT we read an alternate or additional symbolic meaning of these two terms,

"…it appears to the present writer that if UT are antonyms, and Urim means 'light,' it is by no means difficult to connect Thummim with darkness, inasmuch as there is a host of Heb stems based on the root -tm, all indicating concealing, closing up, and even darkness… This explanation would make UT mean 'illuminated' and 'dark' (cf Gaster in Hastings, ERE, IV,813)

We also have some of the Dead Sea Scrolls showing us this symbolism of the UT.

“He shall make you mighty by His Holy Name, so that you shall be as a LION among the BEASTS of the FOREST” The Dead Sea Scrolls – A New Translation by Wise, Abegg & Cook pp.150 (1Q28b,1QSb Col.5)

In this same translation of the DDS we read about the UT as “Tongues of Fire” on page 178 and 1Q29 Frag.1 in part reads, “…the stone, just as [the Lord commanded…] [and your Urim (?).shall come forth] with him, with tongues of fire…” The tongue on the Gold Lion I have is fully extended, as in an attacking position, ready to devour as fire does.

The revelation the Holy Scriptures give us on the central stone of Scripture relates directly to the prime symbol of the UT. This “stone of the priesthood” is given much attention in both the Old and New Testament. The fact that the UT carries itself over into the NT is noteworthy.

“To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious, 2:5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. 2:6 Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. 2:7 Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, 2:8 And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.” I Peter 2:4-8 (KJV)

And all glory be to Christ Jesus who is our High Priest and Shepherd who is THE STONE of Israel symbolically represented in the UT.

“But his bow abode in strength, and the arms of his hands were made strong by the hands of the mighty God of Jacob; (from thence is the shepherd, the stone of Israel:)” Genesis 49:24 (KJV)

“And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;” Ephesians 2:20 (KJV)

[_ _]

“Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.” Isaiah 28:16 (KJV)

Now that we have established some basic identity as to what the UT is, we can now track its movement through time to its present location in Seattle, Washington, USA, as well as see its eventual destination back to Jerusalem.

“Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces.” Daniel 2:34 (KJV)

This is a most interesting verse as we have reference to a stone cut “without hands”. This implies that it was Divinely made as does Zechariah 3:9 and these two verses point back to the time of its origin which was not listed in the priestly and tabernacle instructions of all the items to be made. This “Christ-Stone” is the one that becomes the Chief Corner Stone The UT of course as we can see is the legitimate physical representation of this great spiritual reality. This stone then makes it journeys through time from its mysterious appearance and is given to Aaron, who places it on his heart in the breastplate of the High Priestly garments. From the time of Aaron to the time of the prophet Samuel the UT was passed down the family lines of the Priests to the time of the High Priest Eli. What happened at this juncture in history is very important to note. This is because the UT only worked “its miracle” if it was in the hands to those authorized by God to have it. We find that the priestly family of Eli had been disqualified for officially serving in the Priesthood.

“Wherefore the LORD God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever: but now the LORD saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed. 2:31 Behold, the days come, that I will cut off thine arm, and the arm of thy father’s house, that there shall not be an old man in thine house. 2:32 And thou shalt see an enemy in my habitation, in all the wealth which God shall give Israel: and there shall not be an old man in thine house for ever. 2:33 And the man of thine, whom I shall not cut off from mine altar, shall be to consume thine eyes, and to grieve thine heart: and all the increase of thine house shall die in the flower of their age. 2:34 And this shall be a sign unto thee, that shall come upon thy two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas; in one day they shall die both of them.” I Samuel 2:30-34 (KJV)

“And therefore I have sworn unto the house of Eli, that the iniquity of Eli’s house shall not be purged with sacrifice nor offering for ever.” I Samuel 3:14 (KJV)

This was a very pivotal time in the history of Israel when there was a new shift from the priesthood to the time of the prophets, who then carried many of the messages of God to the people in the absence of a viable and functioning priesthood. Notice that at the death of Eli the Scriptures say, “the glory is departed Israel”,

“And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast born a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it. 4:21 And she named the child Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband.” I Samuel 4:20-21 (KJV)

Many think that this departure only refers to the Ark in the hands of the Philistines. That of course is true but there is another important aspect to this story and it regards the UT and the priesthood. At the death of Eli what happened to the UT? It was not until much later that God finally fulfilled His prophecy when Solomon thrust Abiathar from the priesthood.

“So Solomon thrust out Abiathar from being priest unto the LORD; that he might fulfil the word of the LORD, which he spake concerning the house of Eli in Shiloh.” I Kings 2:27 (KJV)

Remember that God said the glory departed Israel, but the Ark was departed Israel for only seven months (see I Sam.6:1). Yet Abiathar was not thrust out of the priesthood until the time of Solomon. This is a very important point to study because from the time of the death of Eli the UT did not function in the hands of an unauthorized priest. So what did God do? We find David taking control of the Ephod (with UT) from Abiathar.

“And David said to Abiathar the priest, Ahimelech’s son, I pray thee, bring me hither the ephod. And Abiathar brought thither the ephod to David.” I Samuel 30:7 (KJV)

What we find is that the glory of Israel had departed from the family of Eli and Abiathar was not or could not use the UT to inquire of the Lord. So we find it very clearly stated that David inquired of the Lord The ephod is used as a general reference and would have included the breastplate and UT for “inquiring” of the Lord.

“And David enquired at the LORD, saying, Shall I pursue after this troop? shall I overtake them? And he answered him, Pursue: for thou shalt surely overtake them, and without fail recover all.” I Samuel 30:8 (KJV)

A further clue the Bible gives is that the glory of God had now shifted from Eli’s house to David when we find David doing things that had formerly only been reserved for the priesthood

“How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the shew-bread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him?” Mark 2:26 (KJV)

The “Rock” of Israel, when properly understood is the UT, the prime symbol of all Israel

“Surely you, Yahweh, are from ancient times, my holy God, who never dies! Yahweh, you have appointed him to execute judgement; O Rock, you have set him firm to punish.” Habakkuk 1:12 (NJB)

Now notice the following verses, in this new light, for they reveal much. The UT (Rock) spoke to David!

“Now these be the last words of David. David the son of Jesse said, and the man who was raised up on high, the anointed of the God of Jacob, and the sweet psalmist of Israel, said, 23:2 The Spirit of the LORD spake by me, and his word was in my tongue. 23:3 The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spake to me, He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God. 23:4 And he shall be as the light of the morning, when the sun riseth, even a morning without clouds; as the tender grass springing out of the earth by clear shining after rain. 23:5 Although my house be not so with God; yet he hath made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things, and sure: for this is all my salvation, and all my desire, although he make it not to grow. 23:6 But the sons of Belial shall be all of them as thorns thrust away, because they cannot be taken with hands:” II Samuel 23:1-6 (KJV)

What a mystery has been revealed in these “last words” of David. He was “the anointed”, and this word can mean both “king and priest”, for he was a temporary custodian of that office until he had properly restored it. We then see that the Spirit “spake by me “and his word was “in my tongue”. Then it is revealed in relation to “the Rock of Israel spake to me”. After this it goes on to describe its light (associated with UT) and then David makes an admission “Although my house be not so with God”. This admission is that the rights of the UT belonged to the priesthood but that God had made an exception to this rule concerning David. David of course knew very well the penalty for sin that had befallen the house of Eli. In addition, he also knew quite well the penalty for sin in usurping the rights of the priesthood when Saul had taken it upon himself to sacrifice, before Samuel had arrived to carry out this priestly function. Note too that Samuel as a prophet was also filling in for the disbanded priesthood family of Eli. This was a great transitional period in the history of Israel and the possession of rights to the UT was very much involved. And even though God gave David special priestly rights he was the one King of Israel most instrumental in restoring the priesthood back to its proper place in the life of Israel. God determined that the line of the family of Zadok from that point on would be the descendant to carry on the duties of the High Priesthood, and have ultimate possession of the UT. Notice here as we backtrack in this story some more clues in the Scriptures to the movement of the UT.

“And when thou hast stayed three days, then thou shalt go down quickly, and come to the place where thou didst hide thyself when the business was in hand, and shalt remain by the stone Ezel.” I Samuel 20:19 (KJV)

I also submit that this “stone Ezel” is another reference to the location of the UT for we find Strong’s Dictionary definition of Ezel (#0237) is, “1) a memorial stone between Ramah and Nob”. Ramah of course was the city of the birthplace of Samuel and Nob was a Levitical city. The UT of course would have been in the possession of the priests, and perhaps Samuel, after the death of Eli, until its procurement by David for transfer to the family of Zadok. Coming back to Hosea 3:4 the reference is clear that Israel would pass through a very long period of time without the UT until the “latter days”. This verse when read together with our opening verse in Ezra 2:63 makes a strong case that the UT would pass many hands until the “latter days” when a descendant of Zadok would find that it is in his possession. We are given a prophecy however in the verse that precedes the description of the UT as the one stone with seven eyes.

“Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, thou, and thy fellows that sit before thee: for they are men wondered at: for, behold, I will bring forth my servant the BRANCH.” Zechariah 3:8 (KJV)

These are later in Zech.4:14 referred to as the two anointed ones, which is a clear reference to the two witnesses.

“And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth”. Revelation 11:3 (KJV)

One of these witnesses will be Elijah of the book of Malachi that will be the one to restore all things (including the UT). Having now understood how David had a right to the UT, and that it was prophesied to make its way into the hands of a descendant of Zadok in the latter days, we now have another description of the UT that will now make perfect sense!

“And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth; 8 I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.” Revelation 3:7 (KJV)

We now have a perfectly proper definition of the UT in the term “Key of David”. Strongs Dictionary (#4668) for the word “key’ can properly be rendered, “opening instrument”. This is the UT (when in the possession of the chosen one of God) that yields “perfect revelation”, and the complete illumination of “Perfect Light. This is another reason why the UT, having an association with David, can also be called “the key of David. We also have another prophecy that shows a further identification for the “my servant” of Zechariah 3:8

“And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will call my servant Eliakim the son of Hilkiah: 22:21 And I will clothe him with thy robe, and strengthen him with thy girdle, and I will commit thy government into his hand: and he shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Judah. 22:22 And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder; so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.” Isaiah 22:20-22 (KJV)

Note that the key is laid on the shoulder (next to the heart). This obviously is the place where the UT is kept with the High Priest. We also see in this verse that a reversal of situations takes place from the days when David took temporary control. We see that this High Priest of the last days (clothed with the robes of the priesthood) will have the government committed into his hands. So in this, while we have had King David in temporary control of the UT, we find this High Priest given a temporary custody of the government of Israel. This Shepherd of Israel, the Eliakim as a peg nailed in a safe place is also referred to as the “one shepherd”.

[_ "The words of the wise are like goads, their collected sayings like firmly embedded nails-- given by one Shepherd." Ecclesiastes 12:11 (NIV) _]

The imagery of these words sound very much like the type of infallible revelation which the UT in the hands of God’s anointed would produce.

[_ "See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight-- indeed, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts." Malachi 3:1 (NRS) _]

The UT will eventually make its way to Israel when a High Priest and Shepherd will guide the people, but this stone will be a trouble for many of the unrighteous.

“And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.” Zechariah 12:3 (KJV)

The UT has had a long absence since the time that is was last spoken of in the Bible, yet the prophecies tell us of its reappearance in the latter days. My knowledge of the UT comes from my mother that had it given to her as a gift over fifty years ago. They lived in Sacramento, the Del Paso Heights community, and that is where the UT first made its reappearance. After the death of my mother it was given to me by my father and I have had it ever since. As a young child I would always find myself looking at this object and trying to figure out what it was and it is only now, almost fifty years later, that its identity has become fully known.

To summarize, the identification of the UT can be broken down into the following points,

Small Object

Not made with other items of the priesthood

One Object (not two)

Used as a Priestly Oracle

Like a teraphim except only the UT was authorized for use by Israel’s God

A gemstone, like an agate (blood red banded with blue)

Flat Oval Stone base with metal engraving – which gives a plurality to it.

Pure Gold Rampant Lion, Tree and Serpent

Seven eyes are engraved on it

Number seven clearly shown in strata

Flashing garnet or red sapphire eyes

Other etchings of unknown meaning.

To summarize its passage through history to today,

Given to Aaron at the time of his installation as High Priest

Stays within the family of Levi until the death of Eli

Possibly secured by the Prophet Samuel

Abiathar gives to David or brings for David’s use

Either kept by King David or transferred to Zadok in the time of Solomon

Hosea prophecy of its absence until the latter days.

Reappears in Del Paso Heights , California over 50 years ago.

Stays in possession of a Zadokite family

Given by father to Dallas E. James circa 1990 (about the time his ministry began)

Present location of Urim-Thummim – Seattle, Washington , United States of America
