Broken

Fingernail stuck in the last can of soda I had in my truck

As I drove to the airport, I sipped and thought about you

It had been so long since we’ve seen one another

Broken

The months and days we’ve missed along the way

Yet, I have counted down the calendar to this day

Broken

Heel on my shoes, as I run into your arms at your homecoming

I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I never let my nervousness be seen by you

Tiny flags waved by all who were there,

Yet, when I saw your face, neither of us seemed to care

Broken

Your body from the grenade to took your left limb

That silver crutch you hold onto so tightly

Now, I hold your other arm and embrace you lightly

Welcome home…..

Time never breaks the bond of respect & love I have for you

Broken is where we all begin.

My brother, I love you…

Now, it’s your turn to take my hand….
