The Other Side, A Synopsis

THE OTHER SIDE – by Divya Chawla

She lay alone on her bed thinking about her life. She had dedicated her entire life towards her children. There was not a single cause that she studied on her own, for her own or by her own. Her life was all about her children and family. It is the way it is, she told herself many times even though she was not happy about it. A woman dedicated her life towards her family while a man protects her and keeps her happy. That is how it worked for Indian families; she told herself that at every occasion that demanded question. Sooner or later, she admitted to herself that she wanted something more from her life. She wanted her life to not just be about a family. She wanted independence, she wanted freedom, and she wanted to be able to live on her own in case a situation demanded it. Indian and Indian culture never supported it yet she enjoyed being part of a family. She took care of her family and extended family very well. After much thought, she decided to become a school teacher so she could teach children to have lofty goals for themselves. She told school children that if they loved art, they should study art to become an artist. If you love science, you should become a scientist, she told children. She somehow wanted to change it for women like herself so they could pursue a life outside friends and family. Her husband was very supportive in her engagement at school, yet, society limited her in many ways. Higher paying jobs went towards men over women because they worked for longer hours. Women couldn’t work as long or as hard as men because they had families to take care of. Life is not equal between a man and a woman. She hoped to change it and wanted it atleast different for her daughter who was only six years old. She told her daughter that a man and a woman are equal and all gifts available to a man are available to a woman. Sharada listened to everything that her mother told her because her mother was her super hero who she adored a lot.
