Success cannot be achieved without hard work and sacrifices. Sometimes, you need to make compromises just to get what you truly want. You have to follow certain principles and overcome challenges in order to be successful in your chosen career, industry, and life, in general.

You need to have a plan. It may not be possible for you to stop working. However, it may be possible for you to hire a personal assistant, so you can reduce your working hours. If you have someone else to help you out, you can reduce a significant period of time from your schedule.

When your workload has become manageable once more, you have to make an assessment and find out what you have to do in order to push towards the next plateau. Be sure to check back often, so you can ensure that you are on the right track. Set realistic expectations that you know you can achieve.

Don’t forget to celebrate small victories. Sometimes, people become too preoccupied with their huge goals that they no longer pay attention to their smaller milestones. Even though you have a lot to accomplish, you should still find time to celebrate every victory you have, no matter how small it is.

Remind yourself of your goals. Stay focused and motivated. You can keep motivational quotes or images near your work area. Print out inspiring stories or pictures and display them on your wall. This way, you can always remind yourself of why you are pushing yourself so hard in the first place.

Also, surround yourself with positive reinforcers and motivators. You can talk to people with good leadership skills and ask them for advice. Remember that support and feedback are essential to success. You can reach your goals faster if you surround yourself with people who can back you up.

Sometimes, you may also have to disengage your mind temporarily to focus on where you are exactly. If you have to put out a fire, you can start by taking deep breaths. When you feel that your stress levels are getting high, take a break. Go outside for a walk to get some fresh air or have a drink. Refresh your mind to keep you calm during stressful situations.

Once you find out what success is about, it will be much easier for you to achieve your goals. Even though the journey seems long and tedious, everything will be worth it when you see the results of your hard work. Keep in mind that the foundation of success is preparation. The more prepared you are, the better your chances of succeeding in life. In fact, preparation can beat talent. No matter how talented you are, you will not be able to show your full potential if you are not prepared.

For example, you are about to take your final exams this week. So, do you start to study or do you wait until the last minute to review? If you are the smartest student in class, you may think that you can just wing the exam so you choose to cram. When the test results are out, you still passed the exam but you are no longer number one. A less smart student has stolen the top spot from you and you wonder why.

Well, that student surely studied for long hours and prepared for the final exams in advance. You, on the other hand, did not do anything and simply rely on stocked knowledge.

So you see, a well-prepared person still has the advantage. If you want to be the best, utilize your talents correctly. By being prepared, you essentially make your own opportunities so you can go wherever you want to go. Preparation is what lets you break the limits that you put on yourself. If you do not prepare, you take on uncalculated risks.

There is just no substitute for it. Between people who pride themselves on their ability to do things using pure talent or stocked knowledge alone and people who take time to prepare, it is usually the latter who end up having the upper hand when it comes to dealing with unexpected things that are experienced in life.

With this being said, preparation actually does more than prepare you for the expected. It puts you in the position to deal with the unexpected. So what are the parts of preparation?

The first part of preparation is admitting that the things you undertake are important. At first, you may not see the value of what you do. Eventually, however, you will figure out the importance of your current actions and decisions when you see their consequences.

The next part of preparation is dealing with whatever comes your way. You have to do this in a timely manner, though, since there is no way for you to prepare effectively if you have already been left behind.

The third part of preparation is being aware of the connection between the present and the future. Just as balance, pace, and rhythm set the stage for graceful transitions from walking to jogging, you can expect identifiable leverage points to be in front of you.

The fourth part of preparation is the anticipation and creative diffusion of the potential points of frustration or conflict. If you notice, equestrians tend to supple and straighten their horses by riding curves instead of attacking problems head-on. Having a vision or target is essential to success. The problem is that most people do not know how to create a target. They merely shoot darts in the air and hope to hit something. When you have a target, you allow yourself to hit what you have to hit. Even when you come up short, you’ll still get closer and closer to hitting it.

Your vision should be a short statement that can guide you over the next three to five years. It has to be specific enough so you can identify what it is that you want to do and don’t want to do. If you are part of an organization, your vision should drive your organization towards a common goal. It should also be motivational in order for you to be constantly reminded of what you want to achieve when things start to go bad.

A business without a vision is comparable to a ship without a rudder. It is in danger of aimlessly drifting away. A lot of small businesses do not have a clear vision, which is why they tend to move from one task to another without having a clear understanding of what connects their individual actions together. Note that your vision has to provide the foundation for everything that you do for your business.

Envisioning is the first step of a vision turning into reality. Your vision’s focus does not have a reality on the material plane. For some people, this is known as faith. Not having a vision is like walking with your eyes closed. If you do not have a place to go, you will not be able to go anywhere. You have to see yourself going somewhere so you can actually get there.

When you see something invisible as real, you manifest an energy that would allow you to overcome obstacles that you may face along the way. Then again, take note that negative visions can also manifest negative results.

When you expand your vision and deeply connect within your needs, you will discover that you have the ability to display and fuse visionary creativity. Also, you will be more charismatic and powerful. You will have a more sincere, energized, and authentic relationships.

Many highly successful individuals have claimed to having a vision board and using it as a vital tool for success. You can make your own vision board by cutting or printing out pictures of what you want to have in your life. Then, put these pictures on a board, like a collage, and hang it in your bedroom so you can see it every day. This should serve as a reminder of your dreams and ambitions, so you can stay motivated.

**]Principle #3 – Set Goals along the Way

Having a final goal is great because you know exactly what you want to achieve. However, this should not be a reason for you to disregard the goals you have along the way. Remember that both your short term and long term goals are important. You need to set specific, realistic, timely, measurable, and attainable short term goals and do your best to attain them.

Highly successful people set daily goals. You can achieve success by solidifying S.M.A.R.T. goals. S.M.A.R.T. stands for smart, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely. You’ll find it much easier to achieve your long term goals if you have smaller short term goals. So how can you set up such goals?

S.M.A.R.T. (Specific. Measurable. Attainable. Realistic. Timely)


A specific goal has a way better chance of being achieved than a general goal. For example, instead of wanting to “get in better shape”, you should “enroll in a gym and work out three days per week.” In order for you to set a specific goal, you have to answer certain questions such as the following:

You have to set concrete criteria when measuring the progress you make towards your goals. Measuring your progress allows you to stay on the right track, experience the excitement of achieving something, and reach your target dates. In order for you to identify if your goals are measurable, you should ask certain questions such as the following:

p<>{color:#000;}. How do you know when the goal has been accomplished?


When you determine your most important goals, you start to find ways on how to achieve them. You develop the skills, attitudes, financial capacity, and abilities necessary to attain them. You start to see opportunities that you have previously overlooked, so you can be closer to your goals.

When you plan your steps ahead and set a timeframe, you can reach your goals faster. The goals that previously seemed out of reach and far away eventually become attainable. This happens not because your goals get smaller, but because you become better as a person.

When you list down goals, you are able to develop your self-image and deem yourself worthy of such goals. You also develop the personality and traits that will let you get closer to these goals.


In order for a goal to be realistic, it has to represent a certain objective towards which you are willing and able to work. Goals can be both realistic and high. It is up to you to decide how high you want your goals to be. You just have to make sure that each of your goals represents progress. More often than not, it is easier to reach a high goal because lower goals tend to exert lower motivational force. In fact, some of the most difficult jobs you have successfully accomplished may seem easy because you did them with love and passion.

If you genuinely believe that you can accomplish your goal, then it is most likely realistic. Another way to determine if your goal is realistic is to look back on your past experiences and see if you have had any similar goals that you have achieved. You can also ask yourself what conditions may be necessary for you to achieve such goal.


When you set a goal, you have to make sure that you achieve it within a certain timeframe. If you do not set a timeframe, you do not create a sense of urgency. For example, planning to “lose ten pounds someday” is not as good as planning to “lose ten pounds within one month”. You have to set your unconscious mind into motion so you can begin working towards your goal.

**]Principle #4 – Stay Optimistic

Do you view the glass as half-empty or half-full? Your answer to this question basically determines your positivity level. If you view it as half-full, you are most likely optimistic. If you view it as half-empty, you are most likely pessimistic. Your outlook in life and attitude towards yourself can greatly affect your health.

Positive thinking has numerous health benefits. Researchers have found that being optimistic can increase your life span and resistance to colds. It can improve your coping skills, physical health, and psychological health. It can also reduce your rates of depression, levels of distress, and risk of death from heart ailments.

Staying positive allows you to live a healthier lifestyle, including having a healthy diet, getting more exercise, not drinking too much alcohol, not doing drugs, and not smoking. Having a positive outlook also allows you to cope better with stressful situations; thus, reducing the toxic effects of stress on your body.

If you are used to having negative thoughts and being pessimistic, don’t worry because you can still turn things around. Positive thinking does not mean keeping your head in the sand and ignoring the unpleasant situations that occur in life, though. It just means that you have to approach the unpleasantness with a positive attitude.

You have to think that the best is going to happen. Be more productive. You can begin with self-talk, which is a continuous stream of unspoken thoughts running through your head. As much as possible, do not use negative self-talk. Instead, use positive self-talk to motivate and encourage you to be your best self.

Aside from self-talk, you can also use a vision board. See to it that you have these elements on your vision board: strength, flow, positivity ratios, positive communication, optimism, and resilience. Place your vision board in an area where you can see it first thing in the morning and before you go to sleep.

Here are more ways on how you can be more optimistic in life:

p<>{color:#000;}. Recognize your power over your thoughts. You have to realize that you are actually in control of your own thoughts and that can change them anytime you want. Make an effort to achieve a positive change.

p<>{color:#000;}. Identify negative thought patterns. Whenever something negative pops up in your head, write it down. It is ideal to keep a journal for your thoughts. This way, you can review them later on and identify a pattern. Take note of the circumstances and the things that triggered such thoughts.

p<>{color:#000;}. Decide to stop your negative thoughts the moment they start to form in your head. Do not let yourself complete these thoughts. Replace them immediately with positive ones. Practice doing this and eventually, replacing negative thoughts with positive ones will be automatic for you.

p<>{color:#000;}. Surround yourself with positive energy. This means surrounding yourself with optimistic friends, motivational quotes, inspiring videos, etc. You can print out motivational quotes. Put them on your bathroom mirror, so you can feel empowered as you start your day. Change your desktop background into something that will keep you motivated at work.

p<>{color:#000;}. Do not give up just yet. It may take some time before you get used to your new habits; but don’t worry because you will eventually get the hang of it. Avoid giving in to the temptation of going back to your old habits whenever you encounter challenges. Don’t let obstacles prevent you from moving forward.

Even though your life’s circumstances do not seem to change, you should still retain a positive outlook. This way, you can find new opportunities that can help you make positive changes in your life.

**]Principle #5 – Be Accountable for Your Actions

Highly successful people take accountability for themselves and their actions. They do not rely on others to get the job done. They look inwards and try to find solutions as they leverage current assets. In case they make a mistake, they own up to it and quickly think of ways on how they can improve the situation and avoid making the same mistake in the future.

Keep in mind that most of a business’ success is about accountability. Many managers think that the key to success is holding their employees accountable for their actions. The truth is managers who hold themselves accountable are the most successful. They do not play the blame-and-complain game. Instead, they make things happen even though there are major obstacles along the way.

Accountability has eight basic rungs, and these are the following:

p<>{color:#000;}. Not being aware of failures and not taking accountability. These are individuals involved in business – managers, entrepreneurs, and employees. They do not have a clue on what is going on around them. They do not care if they cause devastation or if they leave customers unhappy. Worse, they think they are doing a good job when in reality they are not.

p<>{color:#000;}. Blaming and complaining instead of taking accountability. There are people who are just fond of playing victims. They always try to put the blame on other people, entity, or situation. It is never their fault. They tend to blame unfair managers, irrational customer expectations, or economic downturns.

p<>{color:#000;}. Delivering excuses instead of results. It is easy for someone to convince himself that he would have been successful if only he had more time, money, or training. He fails to realize that the real causes of his failures are his lack of focus, procrastination, lack of metrics, and low productivity.

p<>{color:#000;}. Waiting and hoping for a miracle. Executives who do not communicate their expectations and entrepreneurs who believe in the motto that “if they build it, they will come” belong to this category. Executives’ subordinates and employees cannot be held accountable if they do not know what is expected of them. Likewise, entrepreneurs who just go for it without researching the market and obtaining feedback from customers are going to fail.

p<>{color:#000;}. Accountability begins by acknowledging the reality. People in the business world are aware of the specific tasks and workload necessary for success. Clever entrepreneurs know that they have to deliver quality products and develop winning business models in order to attract paying customers.

p<>{color:#000;}. Accepting responsibility and ownership. Courage, determination, and commitment are required to move forward into the business world. If you are not motivated enough, you can resort to blaming, complaining, and making petty excuses. Eventually, you will fall down the business ladder.

p<>{color:#000;}. Applying familiar solutions to predictable challenges and tasks. Many good executives and employees are at this level of accountability. While they own up to the situation and take pride in their abilities, they remain unprepared for unexpected situations. Because of this, they usually fall off the business ladder or unload problems up the line.

Entrepreneurs who succeed despite the odds and employees who develop new approaches to keep customers happy belong to this category. These people create innovative products and achieve breakthroughs for markets you have never even thought of reaching.

In conclusion, every entrepreneur who seeks to change the world and every employee who wants to be the best need to make accountability their guiding principle. Before you begin to assess accountability in other people, you should take a look at yourself. Do you think you are accountable?

**]Principle #6 – Have the Courage to Overcome Obstacles

Success is practically driven by a critical distinction, and that is whether you believe that your failures are the results of personal deficits that you do not have control over or that they are mistakes that you can fix with effort.

Know that success is not the only one that your mindset determines. It has been found that people who believe that their failures are the result of their personal deficits have a higher rate of depression.

Optimistic individuals fare better because they view their failures as learning opportunities so they can do better next time. Having a success mindset, however, is not easy. It requires emotional intelligence or EQ.

There are certain challenges that may drag you down because they seem to be barriers that are impossible to overcome. This is not the case for highly successful people. Even if they face these challenges, they do not allow themselves to be held back.

Challenges to Overcome

p<>{color:#000;}. Age. Successful people do not let their age define their capabilities. No matter how old you are, you can still achieve success.

However, once you begin to derive your sense of satisfaction and pleasure from comparing yourself to other people, you begin to lose control of your destiny. This is why you should not let your self-worth rely on what other people think or do.

p<>{color:#000;}. Toxic people. You are basically the average of the five people you hang out with. If you spend time with successful people, you will be successful too. If you spend time with toxic people, they will drag you down with the strife and the stress that they create.

p<>{color:#000;}. Fear. It is merely a lingering emotion that your imagination fuels. It is a choice. Those who are successful simply flip it on its head. They experience euphoria whenever they conquer their fears. Do not hold yourself back just because you are scared. Remember that dying is not the worst thing that you can do, but rather letting yourself die inside while you are still breathing.

p<>{color:#000;}. Negativity. You cannot expect life to always go your way, but you can make your time count. Rather than complain about how things should have went, reflect on the things that you are thankful for. Look for the best solutions, deal with the problems, and move on.

Highly successful people are not deterred by guilt from their past or anxiety for the future. They focus on the present moment. In order for you to live in the present, you have to accept both your past and the uncertainty of your future. Make peace with your past and do not put so many expectations on yourself. As Mark Twain puts it, worrying is like paying a debt that you do not owe.

p<>{color:#000;}. State of the world. The world is full of pain and suffering. Everywhere there is war, fragile economies, violent attacks, environmental disasters, and failing companies. Successful people do not worry about these things. They know that they have no power over these situations, so they focus on their efforts and attention. They try to look for good in the world, so they can improve their lives and their environment. They are aware that small steps are essential in making the world better.

You see, your mindset drives your success. With focus and discipline, you can make sure that these obstacles do not hold you back from being a better person and reaching your full potential.

Many people associate success with being in the right place at the right time. Although luck can contribute to success, hard work is still its main foundation. If you want to be successful, be ready to invest blood, tears, and sweat. Do not wait for the perfect idea or timing. Go ahead and hit the ground running, even though the timing’s not perfect.

Here are some of the ways you can do to create your own luck:

According to studies, more than eighty percent of individuals who feel that they are lucky actually work hard to create their own good luck. By contrast, those who feel that they are not lucky tend to believe that they do not have the power to change bad luck. Successful people see the world with optimism. They use their optimism to keep them resilient in times of distress.

p<>{color:#000;}. Open yourself to possibilities. Expand your network by meeting new people. Keep an eye out for opportunities and do your best to make the most of them. You have to be open to possibilities, even if this means embracing change or different ideas.

So the next time you make a crucial decision for your future, make sure that your mind is clear. Take a deep breath to calm yourself and hear your inner voice better.

You may even have to sacrifice certain things just to achieve what you truly want. Remember that good luck comes to those who seek and work hard to achieve it.

Highly successful people know when to stay and when to leave. They are intuitive and not afraid to make difficult decisions. You should be like them if you want to succeed in your career or business.

However, you should know the difference between running away and having to leave. For instance, if you are fed up with the toxic environment of your workplace, it may not be a good enough reason to leave. Do not throw away many years of hard work just because you are frustrated. Try to stick it out and see if you can make a change. If all else fails, then it may be time to let go.

Remember that running away does not build careers. You should clarify your goals. Determine where you want to be in about five years and map out how you can get there from where you are. Formulate an intelligent guess and use that as a touchstone to help you determine your next move.

Go out of your way. First, you have to learn about the most common reasons why employees quit: not liking their boss, resenting office politics, and feeling unappreciated.

If you do not like your boss, there is a good chance that he does not like you, too. Instead of being resentful, accept that you are also part of the problem. Treat your boss like a difficult yet important client. When you feel that you are lacking empowerment, stop sweating the small stuff. Nobody likes to be micromanaged. To prevent getting stressed out, just let it go. However, you should not avoid your boss. Just focus on the important tasks and deliver good results.

Oftentimes, people blame ‘politics’ when they start to lose. While office politics may exist, it should not be a reason for you to deliver substandard results. Identify the key stakeholders and treat them as your difficult yet important customers. Know what makes them irritated and make sure that they see their reflections in your plans. You should also give before you receive.

According to research, those who are passionate about their work tend to choose good colleagues and mold their careers into what they truly want. Evaluate your company and find out whom you want to work for. Learn how you can be of help.

Confidence is key to success. It helps you do better in your studies, work, and even relationships. However, too much confidence can make you seem arrogant. Nobody wants to be around an arrogant person. So, even though confidence is important, you should never forget to stay humble.

Sometimes, you will make mistakes and you should not be afraid to admit them. Admitting your mistakes proves that you do not just value your decisions and opinions, but you also value others. When you are humble, people will respond well to you because it shows that you put yourself at the same level as them. Moreover, humility soothes your soul, gives you higher self-control, and makes you more helpful.

How Can You Stay Humble?
