Seven Chapter Bible Overview

(An Introduction)

The Bible is rather large and can be quite confusing at times. The eight short eBooks in this series can be considered to be like the CliffsNotes on the Bible. This eBook can be used:

A. By people who have never read the Bible ~ to give them an overview of the Bible and what it contains.

B. By people who have read the Bible from cover to cover numerous times ~ as a refresher of the most important parts of the Bible or to be able to help others understand the Bible during a relatively short conversation.

C. By many people who are somewhere between

1. People who have listened to short sections from the Bible during church services

2. People who have read a few books of the Bible

3. People who read daily devotions

4. People who want to understand how the various parts of the Bible fit together

5. People who want to understand the most important concept(s) in the Bible.

The eight short eBooks in this series give a framework into which the rest of the Bible can be placed. This framework consists of seven chapters in the Bible:

1. Genesis Chapters 1, 2 and 3

2. John Chapter 1

3. Hebrews Chapter 11

4. Revelation Chapters 21 and 22.

These seven chapters can be called “The Executive Overview of the Bible.” An executive overview is often a part of many long reports: it contains a short overview of the environment leading up to the current problem, a statement of the problem, a brief summary of the proposed solution, and a concise procedure to get from the problem to the solution.

Beginning: The first two chapters of the Bible give a brief and concise statement of the harmonious environment that existed in the beginning.

Problem: The third chapter in the Bible gives us a statement of the problem.

Procedure: The first chapter of the Gospel of John starts to give us a clearer picture of the procedure God uses to move human kind from their problem to the solution God has provided for them.

Application: The eleventh chapter of Hebrews shows what happened when God’s procedure (God’s Word) is applied to a person’s life. This chapter focuses on people who lived in Old Testament times; even before God came back to live on the earth in the form of Jesus Christ. In the twenty-first century, with Christ’s example, it should be easier to see the LIFE God wants us to have!

Solution: The last two chapters of the Bible assure us that the problem will be solved.

Human kind has lived after the first three chapters in the Bible (Genesis Chapters 1, 2 and 3) and before the last three chapters in the Bible (Revelation Chapters 20, 21 and 22) from virtually the beginning of written human history (in the Bible) to the present day and beyond! What started in the book of Genesis is completed in the book of Revelation.

The first words in the Bible are, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth . . .” (Genesis 1:1). The first words in the second to the last chapter of the Bible (Revelation 21:1) are, “And I saw a new heaven and a new earth . . .” There is continuity from the beginning to the end of the Bible.

Everything that exists was created by “The Word of God,” see the second book of this series titled, Created by: The Word of God. John 1:1, 3a and 14a says: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God . . . Through him all things were made . . . The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.” See the fifth book of this series titled, Role Model.

In the first two chapters of the Bible everything and everyone lived in harmony, somewhat like all the parts of a healthy human body function in harmony; see the third book of this series titled, Harmonious Life and Responsibilities. Throughout the Bible people have had faith that harmonious life would be restored, see the sixth book in this series titled, We Live By Faith. Harmonious LIFE is restored in the last two chapters of the Bible (Revelation Chapters 21 and 22); see the seventh book in this series titled, Eden Restored. Revelation Chapter 21 gives us a clearer picture of the physical structure of the city of peace in the eighth eBook of this series titled, The New Jerusalem.

Often we try to make the Bible much more complicated than what it really is! The seven chapters, in this Seven Chapter Bible Overview series are very powerful. They help place the entire Bible in focus. Without this focus, it is easy to get bogged down and lose focus when reading the rest of the Bible. Once familiar with these seven chapters, it is much easier to understand the rest of the Bible.

Although the Bible doesn’t say so, there is a good possibility that God sat down with Adam and Eve and recited the first and second chapters of Genesis over and over again until they knew it by heart. Just like a child requests a parent to retell a bedtime story over and over again, until the child can recite it word for word. Later these same children recited it to their children, grand children, etc. for generations. Eventually the oral tradition was written down and passed on to us in printed form. There is a lot of information packed into the first two chapters of Genesis!

In a somewhat similar manner, Revelation 1:1 and 19 states: “The revelation from Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John . . . Write, therefore, what you have seen, what is now and what will take place later.” God was very active in telling, through the apostle John, what will happen when all things are restored in Revelation Chapters 21 and 22.

Why are there eight short eBooks in this series? All of the material could easily be placed in one eBook. However, each eBook is designed to be used in a series of one-half or one hour Bible study sessions. Separate eBooks for each session gives emphasis to the topic for that session. Also, separate eBooks may make it easier for people to discover the series while browsing for eBooks to read at their favorite eBook retailer.

Why is eBook 2 (Created by: The Word of God) listed under the category of science fiction? Because the author strongly believes the embryo theory discussed in this eBook explains complex Biblical concepts in a way people can understand. And it places other widely accepted, yet conflicting, theories in their proper perspective within the embryo theory. Yet this theory is seldom, if ever, mentioned in Christian literature. Similar theories are occasionally discussed in the controversial TV series Ancient Aliens on the History channel; when they indicate there is historical evidence the universe and everything in it was developed (or is being developed) by intelligent beings according to a specific plan or design.

Note: The embryo theory suggests we are much closer to the beginning of human history than the end. There may be times of serious turbulent periods of time ahead however.

The focus of this series of eBooks:

1. On LIFE as God designed it in Genesis Chapters 1 and 2

2. As God, through Jesus Christ, modeled LIFE (as God intended) in John Chapter 1 and throughout the rest of the New Testament

3. How God intends to fully restore LIFE (restore Eden) in Revelation Chapters 21 and 22.

Suggestions for Group Discussions

This series of eBooks are designed to be most effective when used in group discussions. Select a time and place for your group discussion. Then give invitations showing time and place of meeting along with the web address where each person can obtain their own eBook copy.

Most of the eBooks is this series will lend themselves to one or two half-hour or one-hour discussion sessions. It may be wise spending twice as long discussing eBook 5 titled Role Model because it has more material to ponder.

As a group leader, get familiar with the topic by reading the seven chapters in the Bible that are covered in this series of eBooks: Genesis Chapters 1, 2 and 3; John Chapter 1; Hebrews Chapter 11 and Revelation Chapters 21 and 22. All seven chapters will be discussed in greater detail in subsequent eBooks in the Seven Chapter Bible Overview series.

Study / Discussion Topics

The focus of the first session is to get started and get acquainted with one another. As leader of the group it would be helpful if you develop some topics / questions appropriate for your group to help everyone get acquainted with one another during the first session.

In subsequent sessions there will be specific study / discussion topics in the eBook for each session related to the Bible chapter(s) being covered.
