[] Marife and the Ghosts

Marife brushed her long black hair out of her face, huffing and fighting the urge to kick the side of the car. The vehicle was a rental, the first one that the man at the desk had offered her when she had turned up at his desk. She had been flying for hours, the flight from her home on the Camotes Islands near Cebu took over sixteen hours, and she consequently had no patience to quibble over the whether she wanted a green or a blue Hyundai. As soon as she had managed to stuff her luggage into the back of the small car and had set up the sat-nav, she was off. According to the British women’s voice issuing from the small screen, Adam’s house was only a half an hour drive and she was extremely excited to see him.

Her fiancé wasn’t expecting her until the next morning, but Marife had managed to switch her ticket to an earlier flight, hoping to surprise him. Butterflies were already fluttering inside her chest and she had had to keep fighting to pull her attention back to the directions that the sat-nav was calmly reporting to her.

‘In two hundred feet, take a left.’ The woman’s voice had been so calm that Marife had been starting to get annoyed. The light had faded fast, the only thing illuminating the road in front of her were the street lights which were unevenly spaced along side it. Taking the turning that had been indicated, she’d found herself in a narrow backstreet, both sides crowded high with trees and bushes. There were no street lights here, the headlights of her car showing her only a few foot in front of her. After around ten minutes of driving, a red light had flashed up on the dashboard before her and she’d cursed lowly, slowing the car to a stop.
