The Power Of Hello

Ephesians 3 – 20: “Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine according to His power that is at work within us”.

Once upon a time in a far off land called Scarborough, a lady and a man met in a laundry room one amazingly fateful day. Neither of them had the slightest idea of the profound impact that first “hello” would birth. Over time they would become friendly but somewhat guarded in their dialog whenever they would bump into each other.

They both had a sad story that eventually became shared information as their trust for each other grew. The lady had two beautiful daughters one being ten years of age while the other was almost “brand new”, if that’s an actual age.

The heaviness in each of their hearts was palpable, tangible and obvious, in spite of their valiant attempts to hide it with forced “generic smiles”.

Their many years of individual disappointments had left scars in need of synthetic covering, not seen as fit for public consumption or viewing. Actual healing at the time, seemed no more than fanciful thought. Surviving or dying were the only options of choice as seen through the eyes of the involved. Excelling wasn’t a goal and for obvious reasons.

The man, with two failed marriages in his portfolio of the past, carried the weight of both like a yoke of failure around his neck relegating his spirit to a very dark place of solitude. The lady had lived out a twelve year “cultural marital” imprisonment that seemingly provided no options for relief, let alone escape. Simply stated: Candidates for greatness, they were not!

Neither he nor she were in any emotional state to fight a major war and up until the “incident”, their friendship while welcomed and appreciated, seemed only capable of supplying a type of momentary coffee break for their internal struggles and hauntings.

Well, ready or not, the war arrived by divine providence, and as God had foreknown from the first “hello”, he and she would become unlikely compatriots attached at the heart in the battle of a lifetime!

It’s a very personal story that can only be outlined in its sharing with greatly needed anonymity applied out of a sincere respect for the younger “real life” characters involved. Exposing all the gory details would serve no constructive purpose so I won’t. This much I can divulge: I am the man and the war would last twelve very long painful years!

I can’t count the days we held on to God by our finger nails amidst the buckets of tears. In time the Lord, as only the Lord can, would dry every one of those tears, heal every scar, and restore the futures of all four! The forced generic smiles have now been replaced by the “real deal”. A significant part of that future restoration is these books. Number 62 if you are counting. I am!

It’s been sixteen years now, and our equally appreciated, birthed by God, in the “shadow of the valley of death” friendship, has only deepened over time. I should mention, the lady in the story is my anointed “proof reader” for all I write. We attend church together on Sundays and it was just a few weeks ago I baptized her in good old Lake Ontario! How’s that for a factual testimony of the amazing “come-back” power of our Lord who is a professional resurrector like no other?

In actual fact, our story is far less about us and far more about the God who had a plan, fortified by His ability to carry it out, and guaranteed by His immense behind-the-scenes sovereignty.

He took those who could barely breathe and by grace, filled their gasping lungs with His divine oxygen! He took objects of other’s rejection and made them the objects of His affection!

Each morning as I sit down to write, Jesus reminds me of that first laundry room encounter with my now best friend and then fast-forwards to the present leaving me overwhelmed as I recall in my mind: All I meant to do was say “hello”! I’m so thankful for that word! I’m so immeasurably grateful and impressed that God can take those “five little letters” and change lives with them!

“My help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth”. Therefore, who can stand against Him? No one can and no one will. And in this story: No one did! Not to be misunderstood as: No one tried, but rather no one succeeded!

In hindsight, the massive complexities regarding the orchestration and choreography involved at every turn and with every step over those twelve years of all-out war to achieve a victorious conclusion, is without a doubt far too immensely and intricately complicated for any human to surmise, they are responsible for the victory that was won “for them” not “because of them”. To believe otherwise, you would also have to conclude that David took down Goliath because HE was bigger in himself!

With the use of reverse reasoning: If Jesus were not “more than enough”, that just shared story wouldn’t exist nor would its thankful characters. At the very least not in their present day state.

More Than Enough = All We Need!

There’s factual information found in the bible that supports not only this story, but equally so, every story. More all-inclusively important is Christ’s “more than enough” reality in every story.

That information allows us the boldness to proclaim without restraint: “Jesus is all we need”! Two statements of emphatic and absolute truth that dovetail perfectly as our applicable fear removing dynamic that un-complicates the scenarios of our individual lives. If God is truly for us, then what does it matter who’s against us? In our darkest of days I would remind my friend without ignoring the obvious: “I know what it looks like but I also know WHO is in our corner. I don’t know how, but I do know HE wins”. And HE did!

If “He is more than enough” then it stands to reason, He must be all we need! Two declarations of fact, that aren’t mantras or clichés we parrot incessantly with the hope that if repeated often enough we will convince ourselves of their truth. They, in their twin-like completeness are to be walked in by us with our every breath. The bible gives us license to do so!

Jeremiah 32 – 17: Ah sovereign Lord, you have made the heavens and the earth with your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.

Colossians 1 – 19: For God was pleased to have ALL His fullness dwell in Him ( Jesus ).

Colossians 2 – 9 & 10: For in Christ ALL the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority.

Colossians 3 – 1 & 2: Since then you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above not earthly things.

Psalm 140 – 7: Sovereign Lord my strong deliverer. You shield my head in the day of battle.

1 Samuel 17- 47: All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves: For the battle is the Lord’s and He will give all of you into our hands.

Philippians 2 – 9 > 11: Therefore God exalted Him ( Jesus ) to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.

Quite the all-encompassing scriptural descriptive of the One who is “more than enough” and “all we need”, don’t you think? What more could one possibly add, to feel more confident or secure in Christ?

The Seen Isn’t All There Is To See

We shouldn’t react to circumstantial evidence as though it is all there is to see! That “surface viewpoint” of life has no place in a child of God’s heart in that we are called to insightfully walk a narrow road by faith not by sight. Sight is flesh and limited at best while insight is Spirit and is unlimited.

There’s a purpose for both as we live and breathe on planet earth, but they do not get shared supremacy in our lives as our determining factor. Furthermore and equally important, we are cautioned by our heavenly Father that without faith we can’t please Him nor walk with Him in an appropriate manner in the light of His sovereign “above all things” umbrella that shades our emotional lives from the blistering sun and keeps our spirits dry when inclement weather sets in for a season!

His cautions are always motivated by His immense love for us and desire that we be different, thus reflect His difference. Salt and light comes to mind. Our biblical descriptive as followers of Jesus is: “In the world but not of it”, therefore we have no obligation to conform to its precepts.

The dictionaries meaning of “precept”: “A rule or principle that prescribes a particular course of action or conduct. The seen and the unseen have very opposite precepts to the extreme. Which of those differing directives we decide to adhere to will determine how we react to life. Perhaps the worst scenario is to have one foot in each world. Now I’m envisioning what happens to the turkey “wish bone” at Thanksgiving dinner! Ouch!

Using a metaphor to illuminate the error of evaluating the “seen” as the all-conclusive “reality” in our lives: Let’s say you went fishing and made conclusions based only on what you see on the surface of the water, you would be terribly wrong in your math regarding the number of fish in the entire body of water. As a fisherman that foolish thought wouldn’t cross your mind because you would know better! You would know that there is much more activity under the water than on its surface. And so it is with us even more so! We know the One who created the water and the fish and the fisherman, sovereignly!

The Magnitude Of God’s Provision!

Jesus is all we need and is “more” than enough because in Him and through Him is everything. In having His everything imparted to us, we lack nothing as we His branches stay connected to Him, our true Vine! He is our inheritance, reward and joy. Romans 8 – 28 > 31 so magnificently describes the magnitude of our true reality in Jesus. In conclusion, I pray our hearts and minds would marinate in it’s good news. That we would put both feet in the camp of our Lord’s and heaven’s precepts. That we would live out the freedom by which Christ has set us free! Free from the obvious with refreshed insight to see His sovereign glorious in all things and rejoice!

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him and have been called according to His purpose. For those God foreknew He also pre-destined to be conformed to the image of His Son that He might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. And those He pre-destined He also called, those He called he also justified, those He justified He also glorified. What then shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us then who can be against us?

This Might Buckle Your Knees

Back to the beginning. The war that I and my three comrades in arms fought for twelve years was already WON before the battle had even begun! It was over before it began! Folks, It was over the day I said “hello” to a lady in a laundry room. Did I know at the time? Of course not! But looking back it all seems so clear now, that the battle wasn’t ours to lose, it was the Lord’s to WIN and He doesn’t lose! It was just a matter of time, God’s time, that Goliath the created, would fall to his Creator! You would have to be me to know how overwhelming that truth is!

Folks, the war was a divinely orchestrated and choreographed by God “set up” to punch satin in the mouth and He did! It was exactly the same scenario as the David versus Goliath story. While Goliath is belching out threats at God’s army, a very young David is at home simply being asked to deliver food to the battle field. That’s everyone’s “surface obvious”!

Before David took a single step in that direction, God knew exactly what was about to transpire. Goliath had already FALLEN in God’s magnificent sovereign mind. It was now a simple matter of David throwing the stone. David could have missed Goliath by a country mile but be sure, that stone was pre-destined to land smack dab in the middle of Goliath’s forehead. It was God’s plan and God’s stone and God’s battle field and God’s time to be glorified! Not for a single moment did David have the slightest idea as to “the plan” as he toddled along with his sandwiches? His inclusion had within itself its own purpose as he would discover that stone became his stepping stone, to the eventual Kingship of Israel!

Folks, this is the God who is more than enough and all we need! This is the God we trust. There are times His obvious isn’t as we would like it to be. Not as neat and tidy as we would wish. But keep in mind there’s always the great “unseen” at work to bring it all to a glorious conclusion!

Romans 8 – 35 > 39: Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: For your sake we face death all day long: We are considered as sheep to be slaughtered. No in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord!
