A main reason, for the failure of humans to have meaningful communication and common understanding, is the difference of perception regarding the concepts under discussion. If there is differentiation in the understanding or perception of the concepts, then the probability of reaching common and useful conclusions is very low. In order to avoid such unfortunate eventuality happening, with regard to the discussions in this book, it is necessary that the meaning of words and concepts, which are used in the study and analysis of the theme, are fully explained and clarified. The main concepts concerned and their meaning as used in the discussion are the following:
1) The human body- The physical appearance and main interface of a human being with its environment. It also serves as the package which houses all organs and biological structures essential for the survival of the human being. Although there are certain semi-automatic functions, in general the activities of the body are under the direct control of the human brain. Communication, between the brain and all parts of the body, takes place via the complex neuron network.
2) The human brain- The central unit which handles all logical processing based on an inherent natural framework of rules of reasoning and data provided by the human sensory system. On basic internal level the brain functions within the limits imposed by the rules of reasoning and it is not subject to any other restrictions. There are though, many pre-programmed automatic responses to a variety of internal or external stimuli. Most of these responses are not the result of logical processing but they are instinctive and in accordance with human nature. Consider, as example, the response to a sudden loud noise; the fast cowering in order to protect vital parts of the body from possible danger is such a kind of pre-programmed response. If now one’s interaction with one’s environment is analysed, it becomes obvious that the brain is operating in a different mode and that the rules of reasoning play a much more important role in this situation. At this point it becomes necessary to introduce the concepts of human Mind, Spirit, Soul and Consciousness.
3) The human Mind- Many times people confuse the words “mind “and “brain” and use them in an interchangeable manner which strictly speaking is not correct. The brain is a physical organ which carries out specific processes under a fixed regime of rules producing outcomes based on the data it receives from the body sensors. But the brain is not capable of determining, on its own, either the task to be performed or the purpose which will be served by such performance. This is where the concept of human Mind enters the discussion. In simple terms one could think of the Mind as being the combination of a physical entity, the brain and the entity commonly referred to as human Spirit. This Spirit is the internal energy and driving force behind one’s creativity and imagination. It enjoys every possible freedom to direct the brain’s tasks towards imagining, conceptualizing, designing and creating anything which is within the limits of “logic” and the limits of “possibility”. One will be correct in considering the Spirit to be the motivator and initiator of every single human activity, thought or imagination. Utilising the capability of the brain, the wants, desires or designs of the Spirit are processed in a logical sequence and they are transformed, if possible, into tangible and defined outcomes. It is obvious that without either the brain or the Spirit the Mind has no meaning, or substance. A brain on its own cannot produce any outcomes because it lacks the energy and the motivation which can only be provided by the Spirit. Similarly the Spirit on its own is unable to logically process any sort of data or input because it lacks the processing capability. But these two elements together form a completely functioning unit which in the final analysis provides the distinction between higher and lower forms of life, with the differentiating characteristic being that of “reasoning” and “creating”. It is important to remember that as far as the internal processes are concerned they are hidden from any outside observer and the only one aware of their existence and outcomes is the person whose Mind produced these outcomes. In turn, the Mind on its own is incapable of communicating anything to the outside world and therefore it is in need of two things; the first one is the assistance of the physical body, which is the interface between the human being and its environment; the second thing needed is a control mechanism which regulates and adjusts human behaviour so that it conforms to the the rules and requirements of the particular environment. It must be pointed out that this control mechanism acts in an advisory capacity to the Mind and it does not posses a direct link to any functions of the human body. It is generally referred to as the human Soul
4) The human Soul: It is the internal control mechanism consisting of a collection of rules and regulations which define the limits within which human behaviour should stay in order to conform to the requirements of interaction with other human beings and the environment in general. It can be considered as a sort of adjudicator of the suitability of activities proposed by the Mind. As stated earlier, the Soul has only an advisory role and its function is restricted to filtering proposals from the Mind by checking them against the framework of rules and regulations which have been accepted by the individual as representing the laws and references according to which the individual wants to adjust his or her behaviour. In other words, that which is called personality or character of an individual is the result of the public demonstration of the internal set of references comprising the individual’s Soul. That is why sometimes one may hear the saying” this person has no Soul” referring to a person who behaves outside of the acceptable norms of the society in which one belongs. The importance of the Soul in the expression of human behaviour is vital and critical. If for whatever reason the references used by the Soul are corrupted or false, or the link of communication between the Soul and the Mind is severed, then human behaviour will be either uncontrolled or will present serious deviation from the generally acceptable behaviour. In the discussion which follows in later chapters of this book, the organisation of references and the integrity of the Soul will be examined in greater detail. The last concept which needs to be defined is the one commonly known as “Consciousness”
5) Consciousness is the personal awareness of the functioning of the internal control mechanism. It fulfils a dual role; it confirms the existence of the Soul and it provides feedback of how well human behaviour conforms to the dictates of the internal control mechanism. This feedback may cause feelings ranging from extreme happiness to the deepest disappointment and unhappiness depending on the level of conformance of the human actions to the dictates of the Soul. Without Consciousness one would not be aware of the functioning or existence of the Soul!
With the definition of basic concepts completed, let us examine in greater detail the overall interaction and the outcomes resulting from the co-operation between these various elements of human existence.
The two concepts of “Mind” and “Soul” in conjunction with the human body determine how the behaviour of an individual appears or manifests itself to other people. The Mind representing the imagination, creativity and the individual’s internal energy, enjoys, in theory, every possible freedom; unrestricted extent to imagine, design and contemplate anything and everything it desires! In principle, there is no shred of evidence that a physical or metaphysical power exists with the capability to limit the extent of this inherent natural right to freedom. Yet as it will soon be seen, human inventiveness has found ways and methods to influence the exercising of this freedom in such a way as to be equivalent to applying restrictions to its expression. This is actually the main theme of this book.
It is clear from the definition that the Mind on its own does not posses the capability to implement or transform its creations, imaginations and designs into reality. The actual transformation and interface with the environment, is undertaken by the physical housing of the human existence which is none other than the human body. If therefore the body had the freedom and power to act as per the demands of the Mind then the whole planet would have been similar to an ancient Roman arena and everyone would have been in conflict with everyone else because with all people having more or less similar wants, desires and objectives the resultant confusion, destruction and in-fighting would have been beyond description.
Luckily this does not happen because of two basic reasons; the first reason is obviously the limited physical capability of the human body. If the power of the body was unlimited then fear of failure or fear for one’s own safety would not have been inhibitory factors in attempts to eliminate opponents, grab their possessions or and pillage their homes. Imagine if everyone was enabled to act in this manner! The species would have had a very short life-span! The second and most important reason is the existence of the internal control mechanism, Soul, which in accordance with a framework of civil rules and moral dictates, sets the limits and offers advise on the acceptability of the proposed by the Mind actions or activities. The stronger the Soul and its link with the Mind the better is the conformance of human behaviour to the dictates of the Soul. The result of the co-operation between Mind and Soul is detectable through the actual actions and activities of the individual, in other words, through the expression of what is commonly known as the individual’s personality.
Consciousness is something similar to a personal and objective observer whose main responsibility is to provide feedback on the degree of conformance of the human personality to the norms and standards which were adopted by the individual as references for the control mechanism. Without Consciousness the negotiation of life situations would resemble sailing in the ocean, without a compass.
The main focus though, of this Chapter, will be the definition and analysis, in some detail, of the structure of the internal control mechanism and the way by which it controls the interaction of an individual with his or her environment, in other words the individual’s behaviour within the individual’s domain.
The flow-chart or process which will result in a particular action or event, commences with the Mind, motivated by the Spirit and assisted by the brain, proposing a certain activity or expressing a particular desire. The proposal is evaluated by the Soul which makes a ruling utilising logic and a reference list containing all the possible allowable and non-allowable activities. If the Soul permits, the body is authorized to implement the Mind’s proposal otherwise nothing happens; or at least in theory nothing should happen The reality though is somehow different because the control of the Soul is not always as strong as it ought to be, for reasons which will be explained shortly; so when the Mind’s proposal or desire is extremely strong, the Soul is overwhelmed and may cave in to the Mind’s demands. This process is witnessed by an independent and not participating observer, namely Consciousness. Using the same criteria as those used by the Soul, it passes a judgement on the conformance of the actual activity to the reference list. The judgement may cause feelings ranging from elation and happiness to despair, remorse and regret depending on the level of conformance of the activity to the reference list.
The above simplistic description of the process transforming a thought or desire into activity or realisation is revealing the Soul to be the regulator of the Mind initiated activities, but it also unveils a host of possible shortcomings leading to serious imperfections and weaknesses. Take for example the situation whereby the reasoning process is flawed due to a variety of shortcomings in one’s mental capability. Obviously in such case, the evaluation of desirability of an activity may only be correct by chance. But the greatest risk of flawed regulation emanates from a possible incorrect reference list. In other words if the moral and legal framework, upon which the reference list relies, is unclear, open to various interpretations or intentionally erroneous, then the regulation can only be inefficient and in the eyes of independent observers possibly wrong. This presupposes of course that the observers are using a reference list which is different and admittedly correct. Which begs the question, of who is ever in a position to judge the validity or universal correctness of the reference framework? In order to propose an answer which would make sense, it is necessary to view the make-up of this theoretical framework of references in greater detail.
Living in an organised community, being part of what is termed society, implies acceptance of a set of rules, regulations and laws. In addition, depending on the religious affiliation of the society, the influence of the religion’s specific moral code places a set of additional rules and regulations in the reference framework. To this framework one must also include traditions and ethics associated with ethnicity, gender and sometimes even superstition! Given that there exist many nations, many Religions and even more traditional tribal structures and faiths, one realizes that it is nigh impossible to define a universally acceptable framework of reference and therefore one is not in a position to objectively evaluate the validity or worth of these frameworks against a universally acceptable standard. Consider for example the probability of an objective evaluation of the Buddhist reference framework by a follower of the Christian or Muslim faiths; it will be very low! The same of course applies in many other situations in which there are big differences of concept perception among various people. The problem of common Reference appears insurmountable and at this point in the discussion let it be accepted that the mechanism controlling human behaviour, is the human Soul which utilizes a framework or set of references in order to decide if the human body may or may not fulfil a design, wish or request emanating from the human Mind. In a sense the Soul is policing human behaviour, guided by the contents of the set of references. For the time being let it be accepted that judgement on the value or correctness of any such set remains to a great extent subjective or unknown.
Human behaviour though, is not restricted only to matters revolving around morality or legality. There is behaviour in social, business, political and many other spheres of human activity. How and by what is the human Mind controlled in these situations? The quick answer is that each of these areas of human activity has a unique set of references which the Soul links to the main framework whenever it is required. Therefore the Soul continues to perform the same function, but in every different case, in addition to the basic set of rules, it references the set of rules relevant to the particular situation. So the overall reference framework consists of a main standard set of basic rules, applicable to all situations, supplemented by numerous smaller sets applicable to particular activities. The mechanism of control remains the same but it just uses a bigger network of filters in order to identify the suitable or acceptable behaviour.
The formulation and contents of the core and peripheral sets of reference are obviously very important, because wrong or incomplete frameworks may result in unacceptable, unwanted or damaging behaviour. They are not written anywhere and definitely they have differences, small or big, as it can be seen from the difference in behaviour even between members of the same family. One may claim that such differences are due to unique personality characteristics of the individuals, but it should be borne in mind that someone’s personality characteristics are mainly defined by the references used by the Soul of each individual. These characteristics are detectable, by other people, via the individual’s behaviour; so everything concerning one’s behaviour is totally dependent on the contents of the framework of references used by the individual’s Soul. The last statement holds true as long as there are no adverse physiological factors preventing the processing of data according to the rules of reasoning.
It is critical to determine the way by which these important reference sets are created and developed, because it is obvious that one is not in possession of such references at birth, nor is one given these at a specific point in life. They appear to be the result of self-development, via a process of acceptance or rejection of external influences, comprising of all sorts of teachings, indoctrinations and life experiences. The structure of the frameworks is put together gradually, piece by piece and it is possible that the process of modification and development never stops up to the time of one’s physical demise.
The discussion in the previous Chapter, showed, that the assumption which wants the human Mind to enjoy unlimited freedom, is only partially correct. Indeed imagination and thoughts are not bound by any restrictions but transformation of the products of these processes into reality is subject to the approval by one’s self-created and imposed control mechanism in accordance to the individual’s set of references.
In a civilised society, community, or country one will find that there is a rather broad than specific agreement among the frames of reference of the members of these structures. This is easily explainable if one considers that members of the same community, or citizens of the same country, are subjected to nearly identical influences by, education, religion, politics and most other life experiences. It is therefore natural to develop frames of reference which although different they have close similarities regarding a broad spectrum of subjects. For this reason, everyone in the community understands and is agreeable with the fact that the boundaries, imposed on human behaviour, are necessary in order to accommodate and protect everyone’s rights. This may sound as a contradiction in terms, because one will wonder how it is possible to assure and protect the right to individual freedom by imposing boundaries on such freedom. The answer of course is that unrestricted freedom to everyone may just mean survival and prevalence of the fittest. Understandably this is not a characteristic of a civilised society but rather an example of application of the law of the jungle. Wild animals enjoy absolute freedom but they have to defend themselves every single moment of their lives. This is not the type of freedom that humans seek. They prefer to accept limitations and boundaries to the expression of their freedom in exchange for a safer and civilised environment. How are these boundaries constructed?
Let us examine a few general sets of reference which possibly belong to the core structure of references of nearly, if not all, humans. The sets to be examined, as an example, are based on influences from education, religion and politics.
Everyone, receiving education, is in effect given information and knowledge on a wide spectrum of subjects, ranging from Science, History, Mathematics and Geography to Psychology and Home economics or Life skills. Each subject introduces into the human mind a unique collection of words and concepts describing the purpose and functioning of the main elements addressed by the object study. Science for example introduces, explains and defines the concepts of “force”, “light”, “energy”, “space”, “time” and millions of other physical quantities. Once assimilated, all these concepts become part of a mental folder which provides the reference to the control mechanism of the Mind whenever the Mind involves itself with matters of Science.
The same thing happens with every other subject. Mental folders are created for History, containing concepts like “freedom”, “war”, “inventions”, “natural disasters”, “technological progress”, “revolution” and many others; for Geography containing words like “demographics”, “country borders”, “climatic conditions”, “continental drift” etcetera; for Psychology, the folder may contain concepts like “personality”, “parental fixation”, “upbringing”, “communication”, “superiority or inferiority complexes” and many others.
All these specific folders for every subject are the constituents of the overall folder pertaining to education. It basically contains data and information referencing all matters pertaining to Education.
Another big folder with quite a number of sub-folders is the one addressing politics. Some important sub-folders together with relevant words and concepts are:
State laws, containing concepts like “constitution”, “legislation”, “public service”, “courts of justice”, “municipal by-laws”, “political parties”, “supreme court” etc.,
Political states, addressing concepts like “democracy”, “dictatorship”, “Parliament”, “government”, “President”, “Senate”, “Kingdom” etc.,
Financial systems, referring to concepts like “Capitalism”, “Communism”, “Socialism”, “taxation”, “Bank”, “currency”, “income”, “profit”, “loss” etc.
The next folder is one with very high importance in the functioning of the Soul as the controller of the activity desired, designed or initiated by the human Spirit. The folder is Religion or Faith and its importance is obvious when one realises that this folder has to be referenced in almost all of life’s activities. For example it may not be pleasing to ignore a couple of chemistry laws resulting in the school lab been gutted by fire, but this is not as significant as it is to disregard morality and cheat one’s way to material success. At the end of the day the effectiveness of Soul’s policing will be mostly judged on the results produced in cases where difficult decisions are required, involving moral or spiritual dilemmas and not on how much one conforms to the dictates of let’s say municipal by-laws . The two main sub-folders of Religion are:
1) Principles of faith, involving concepts like “God” , “Creation”, “After-life”, “Heaven”, “Hell”, “martyrdom”, sacrifice”, “reincarnation”, “remorse”, “eternal damnation” and a plethora of associated other concepts,
2) Morality codes, containing all the “dos” and “don’ts” emanating from the main beliefs advocated by the particular religion. Here are key words probably included in these codes; “brotherhood”, “crime”, “caring”, “compassion”, “honesty”, “loyalty”, “faithfulness”, “modesty”, “respect”, “devotion” and others.
How are these major folders used so as to provide a reasonable and effective reference framework for the control mechanism? One has to realize that in all cases these folders set the allowable limits within which human behaviour must be restricted in order not to deviate from the rules and regulations which have been accepted as valid references by the individual. The folder, for example, which contains the municipal laws, determines exactly the limits within which human behaviour may be deemed acceptable with reference to these laws. Logically one expects the municipal by-laws to be in agreement with wider scope country laws and if therefore the country is sensibly run then one should not experience contradiction between the folder containing the references to the municipal by-laws and the folder containing the country laws. Such folders, which are not in any respect in contradiction to each other, are called, for the sake of the current discussion, “co-incident” folders. This name implies that none of the folders involved applies any restrictions to the limits allowed by any other folder. A second example of such relationship is derived from the comparison between the “human rights” folder and the “anti-racism” folder. Reasonably one does not expect a contradiction between these two folders. There are obviously other types of folder relationships and the most important ones will be investigated in more detail.
A prime example of partially antagonistic relationship exists between the folder containing the references of a moral code and the folder containing the references of politics. It is possible that the limits imposed by the references contained in the political folder may allow activities which are not permitted by the limits imposed by the moral code folder. Deception, manipulation and elimination of opponents are not activities disallowed by the political references but are in total contradiction and fall foul of the limits imposed by the references of the moral code. There are activities allowed by both folders and there are many more which are allowed either by only the one or only by the other. Folders in partial agreement are called “partially co-incident”. How is an activity handled if that activity needs to seek permission from more than one reference folders? The answer is easy and simple; the folders comprising the total set of references must be prioritised and arranged in order of overall importance and value to the individual. If for example a political type of activity seeks permission from both the political folder and the moral folder, but a conflict arises due to different requirements by the two folders, then the folder with the higher priority provides the final decision. A further example to clarify the previous statements: a company is doing well but it is very difficult to achieve further market penetration. The only way to increase profits and keep the shareholders happy is to reduce costs, by dismissing employees in supporting functions and ask for a bigger effort by the remainder of the staff. This action is bound to result in three hundred employees some of them with many years service to the company, losing their jobs. As far as the folder containing the references for business practices is concerned, the activity can be authorised as it makes business sense and it is actually a common business practice. But as far as the morality of such action, leaving three hundred families without income, there is a total contradiction with the generally acceptable ethics! What decision does the Company’s executive officer take? Well, if as far as the CEO is concerned, the business folder has a higher priority and represents higher value than the morality folder, the CEO dismisses the three hundred employees, while if the morality folder has the higher priority then the CEO does not go ahead with this action and tries to find alternative methods to increase profitability.
Another major category, of reference folders, is the one in which there is no discernible relationship among any of the folders. In other words they refer to such diverse subjects that there is neither agreement nor contraction nor any other type of engagement between these folders. One may imagine the references contained in the folder of “philanthropy” and the references contained in the folder of “Laws of Thermodynamics” There is no kind of relationship between the references in these two folders and for this reason these folders are called” disengaged”.
Of the three types of relationship between reference folders, the “co-incident” and the “disengaged” categories are not of any particular importance, because, in the case of the first category folders, there is specific agreement among the references while in the case of the second category, there is no interaction among the references whatsoever. The category with special interest is the one containing the “partially co-incident” folders, because there is interaction among the references and the outcome of the evaluation of an activity depends on which folder has the higher rank or higher priority among the folders involved in the evaluation.
It may help the better understanding of the relationship among the reference folders, to visualize each folder as a circle whose perimeter defines the boundaries drawn by the contained references. “Co-incident” folders fit nicely within each other, “partially co-incident” folders cover each other in part, while “disengaged” folders have no point of contact.
Already a lot of time has been spent discussing the relationship and interaction between reference folders but the primary and obvious question is; “How are these folders created or established in the first place and by which method such variety of frameworks can be applied successfully in the process of behaviour control?”
The first thing one must consider is that adoption of sets of reference by an individual, takes place over a relatively long period of time. It starts at a very young age when only simple concepts can be understood and continues with more complex frameworks as the individual matures and is in a position to evaluate the validity and applicability of these references in daily situations. In most instances this process only stops at quite an advanced age, but in most cases, only at death.
What actually happens in order to enable firstly the adoption of these references and secondly the practical application of these references in the process of deciding and acting, something that most humans repeat hundreds of times on a daily basis?
Life, which in effect represents a continuous interaction between one and one’s environment, which of course includes other people, provides a host of stimuli and influences to the individual. These are evaluated by each person or individual and categorised into “beneficial”, “indifferent” or “harmful”. The evaluation and categorisation takes place with the application of “reasoning”, which is the process of using “logic” in a structured way in order to reach valid conclusions. The result of such process either gets filed in the relevant reference folder, if it is evaluated for the first time, or it is compared with an already filed previous evaluation in order to establish consistency and compliance. A future repetition, of any similar occurrence, is handled on the basis that a reference regarding such event already exists. Therefore anything which has already been evaluated and filed constitutes part of the individual’s bank of knowledge. This bank of knowledge, or total number of reference sets, evaluated and accepted as correct, forms the foundation upon which the individual bases the decision making process for all life’s activities. The process appears reasonable; nevertheless it is potentially erroneous for the following two reasons:
1) The process presupposes that the individual has the experience and wisdom to correctly evaluate the validity of the external inputs. This is not necessarily true especially when the individual is very young. That is why most legal systems in civilised countries show some tolerance towards youths deviating from the law. It is reasonable that if an individual is not given enough time to establish and adopt the required system of references, then he or she must be shown tolerance and leniency in a possible transgression of the law
2) Irrespective of all good intentions to categorise concepts and influences, it is true that in a lot of cases such evaluation is virtually impossible, due to either lack of evidence or due to lack of exact definition regarding these concepts. Actually there are reference folders containing words whose meaning is not only universally understood, but also supported, in the majority of cases, by solid evidence, as there are folders containing concepts which are subjectively interpreted and are devoid of any evidentiary support. As a result of such absence of evidence, adoption of any such reference can only take place based on “faith” or more accurately “blind faith”. This of course represents a big threat to the possible integrity, validity or value of the reference.
The statements in the previous two paragraphs will be revisited in the discussion forward because they are pregnant with possible dangers for the individual, for the society and humankind in general.
But firstly, in order to clarify and comprehend the way by which the adopted reference folders are applied by the Soul in controlling the human Mind let us picture the following imaginary set-up:
The objective is to construct a comfortable residence, within which the human Mind will be free to perform its activities. The residence is to be constructed in gradual steps. Just at the time when an individual begins to comprehend the surrounding environment, the Mind residence starts materialising. As new life experiences and knowledge are received by the individual, the residence gets bigger and bigger with many different wings and every wing containing many rooms. Something, which starts as a humble abode, with the passing of time, becomes a magnificent mansion. The unique characteristic of this mansion is that the material, used for the construction of the walls and partitions, consists of a great number of words and concepts. Furthermore the mansion has certain peculiarities in the way in which it is constructed. Many rooms are of fixed dimensions and are enclosed by solid walls, made from well proven concepts, while other rooms are undefined as far as shape or size are concerned and they are made of prefabricated walls or concepts which are vague, unclear and unproven. Such walls can easily be removed or rearranged. Each room of the house, irrespective of its construction, is named after anyone of the numerous reference folders which reside in the individual’s system. The mansion has even got wings named after the broader reference categories. There is, for example, an Education wing with rooms named, Science, Art, History, Mathematics and Economics among others. Another wing is named Religion and the rooms have names like, Morality and Principles of Faith as well as Life and After-Life. The Politics wing is also impressive with rooms named, State Laws, Political Structures, Taxation and Financial Systems.
The walls in the Education wing are solid; the walls in the Religion wing are pre-fabricated while the walls in the Politics wing are a mixture of solid and pre-fabricated. This is due to the fact that the walls in the Education wing are made of mostly words or well proven concepts, while in the Religion wing the walls are pre-fabricated because they are made of concepts based on faith or axiomatic principles and they lack the support of evidence; in the Politics wing some concepts are well proven and they meet general acceptance while others are given arbitrary or unsupported by evidence interpretation. So the walls of the rooms in the various wings are made of words, concepts and theories, some proven and some totally arbitrary.
The Mind is free to visit any room it desires and obviously, the more luxurious and comfortable the mansion, the greater is the content of the Mind. The corridors connecting the wings and rooms to the lounge, as well as the lounge itself, are made of all the concepts, principles and references comprising the folder which has the higher priority status among all reference folders in the individual’s portfolio. It is obvious that the walls of the rooms represent the limits within which the Mind is allowed to operate when dealing with a particular subject, but do not necessarily restrict the freedom of the Mind to think, imagine or desire to any extent it wishes. Its interaction with the outside world though, is taking place only at the point at which it steps out of the room and onto the corridor leading to the huge lounge of the mansion. In other words the workings of the Mind become visible to an outside observer once the Mind is allowed to exit from a particular room. Permission to the Mind to make its workings visible is given by the representatives of the control mechanism who are guarding each and every exit of any room onto the corridor and the lounge. These controllers, operating under the supervision of the Soul, check for conformance between the Mind workings and the references contained in the primary and highest priority folder. If there is no contradiction then permission is given for the Mind to make its workings visible, otherwise the Mind is advised that unless suitable modifications take place, in order to ensure conformance, its workings cannot be made public.
The mansion is not a static structure and sometimes a room is added to a wing or the size of a room becomes bigger or even a room disappears altogether! This set up ensures that the triad of Soul, Mind and physical body function together in harmony and the fact that the freedom of final behaviour or expression is slightly restricted, is considered just as a minor inconvenience for the sake of ensuring equality and fairness among the members of a human society sharing common principles in most important aspects of life.. As explained earlier, letting the human Mind totally free and placing the physical body under the Mind’s unrestricted and total control could result in a situation in which the law of the jungle reigns supreme.
This rather strange tale, presents in allegoric form that which should happen in an ideal situation in which all reference folders can be evaluated and prioritised in a straight forward and transparent fashion. Unfortunately in real life the situation is rather different.
The human control mechanism, in other words the human Soul is continuously subjected to influences emanating from many obvious and not so obvious sources. A flashback to the statements made earlier regarding the risks and dangers underlying and undermining the proper functioning of the control mechanism will hopefully assist in identifying ways to avoid and safeguard the freedom of the Mind and the integrity of the Soul.
It is important to remember that the mansion or immaterial domain of the Mind, is largely controlled by the Soul and is under constant modification or alteration for the major, if not all, part of one’s life. This is due to the interaction, between the individual and his or her environment, which constantly introduces new concepts, new data and new experiences requiring alteration or re-evaluation of the already available reference frameworks. The individual’s analytical and reasoning abilities are the main assistants to the Soul in constructing a solidly founded dwelling for the human Mind. This means that all inputs and experiences are evaluated for their validity using only already verified evidence and clear analytical logic. Feelings, perceptions and unproven information may lead to horribly distorted and untrue conclusions which if erroneously adopted and never re-evaluated, may serve as reference for one’s behaviour for a period extending perhaps over one’s lifetime! No reasonable person wishes or desires something like this.
What are the critical factors which have an influence on the size, shape and general appearance of the domain constructed for the human Mind?
It is reasonable to expect that the number of rooms is exactly equal to the number of different reference folders which have been introduced into the individual’s reference system. As mentioned earlier, when one reaches adulthood one has normally enough experience in order to critically analyse and evaluate most of the references appearing in one’s life cycle. But the risk lurks at the beginning of life when one is not equipped with the necessary experience and analytical ability in order to evaluate the influences, inputs and other proposed references. At this age a lot depends on the inputs and the examples provided by the immediate family environment. The first few years are critical for the future psychological and personality development of the individual because whatever gets introduced as reference if unquestioned may remain as reference for the whole life-time even if it does not deserve such status. Religious, Political and Educational systems took advantage of this situation since the time humans began organising themselves into communities, societies and States.
Having the power to govern or control other people was and still is high on the agenda of human beings. Perhaps it is a dictate or demand of evolution and humans just follow what comes natural to them, but the effects of such sometimes covert manipulation or downright abuse are in most cases negatively impacting human lives and perhaps the prospects of development of the entire species.
Consider for example the case whereby one is born in a country which is isolated, politically and geographically and let us call this country Albakorea. Furthermore, for the last two hundred years, this country is ruled by descendants of a warlord who imposed a very strict and short code of conduct. This code elevates the current and future leaders to the level of deity whose wisdom and decisions can never be disputed. Education in its totality revolves around very basic subjects of which the most important is the history of the dynasty running the country. Religion is restricted to rituals and activities exalting the wisdom and ability of the leader while even the mentioning of other religions in public, may invite severe punishment. Freedom of speech is non existent and communication with the rest of the world is censored and reduced to the absolute minimum. Given the above situation how may the domain of one’s Mind look like?
Since Education is so limited, it follows that the Education wing will consist of only a very small room. The same applies to Religion and Politics. The mansion wings are nothing more than extremely small rooms with thick concrete walls and no windows. As a result it is not possible for outside data or influences to enter the domain of the Mind. The construction looks more like a solidly built shack rather than a spacious and majestic mansion. Does this present a problem to the Mind or the Soul? The sad answer is that neither the Soul nor the Mind has any knowledge or any sort of reference which would inform them about the existence of much better educational, religious or political structures. As a result there is no protestation or discomfort felt by the individual, simply because one does not know better. This situation is similar to people living in a poor country not feeling uncomfortable about the luxuries enjoyed by people living in well off countries because the are not aware of such kind of luxurious living. All that they are aware off is the fact that everyone lives under similar conditions as theirs. Asking or looking for something much better seems impossible or a dream to them and may not even enter their thoughts.
The small size of the domain has another undesirable effect. The degree of expression permissible to the Mind is curtailed; therefore one’s imagination, creativity and ingenuity are hidden from the rest of the world. This, results in the elimination of the important characteristic, gifted to humans by nature, which is the ability to think, imagine, analyse, design and continuously improve one’s situation both spiritually and materially. In effect progress in all spheres of human life is adversely affected by the imposition of such limitations.
A closer look at the situation applicable to a citizen of Albakorea shows clearly that there is no possibility that Educational, Religious or Political structures would be challenged because there is nothing which could trigger questioning the existing set-up. The citizen of Albakorea does not even realise that in reality he or she is residing in an extremely small spiritual dwelling which restricts one’s movements towards all directions. The reference folders implanted since birth into one’s Soul ensure one’s wilful submission to whatever the leader or the long existing system demands. In human history there are plenty examples demonstrating the application of such, one may say invisible, prisons of the Mind upon a great number of people.
Glaring and prime examples are organised religious entities which through fear, coercion, unsubstantiated claims and pure populism imposed a variety of moral codes which under modern criteria are found to be well short of average acceptable standards! Consider for example the particular religion which officially does not allow women to participate in prayers at the temples and relegates them to a status well below the status reserved for the male members of the faith!! Yet, the female faithful of this religion accept the situation without protestation and they consider it as totally normal! It is obvious that the religious frame of reference, implanted since birth in the followers of the faith, prevents even the disadvantaged female members from questioning or refusing to accept such degrading treatment. Furthermore they are content because they are not aware of their rights as human beings, and their understanding of the situation is distorted to such a degree as to consider the women of other religious persuasions, who enjoy equal rights to their male counterparts, as sinners and morally corrupt. The invisible Mind prison, into which these women are forced to live through ignorance and deliberate isolation from truth and reality, resembles a very narrow and badly built shack rather than a luxurious mansion.
Some more examples will be examined from a wider spectrum of human situations in order to stress the importance of having one’s Mind roaming freely in a big and comfortable dwelling rather than a small and uncomfortable shack or more correctly an invisible narrow prison cell. A reminder that the cell is indeed invisible because one does not even realise that one’s Mind is restricted in such a confined space or that this cell even exists.
The examples which will be examined are representative of extreme situations specifically selected in order to stress the dependence of human behaviour on the references adopted by individuals, communities or societies. At the end of each example there will be an analysis of how the particular set of references affects human behaviour.
1) Males are physically stronger and possess a higher I.Q. than females
2) Males are the decision makers in a household. Females must obediently follow the instructions given by the head of the household.
3) Males are obliged to work and provide the finances for the needs of the household while females are to stay at home, raise the children and take care of all the household chores
4) In courtship the male takes the initiative while it is considered improper for a female to initiate any such activity.
5) Males may go out with friends irrespective of time or occasion while females are denied such freedom.
It is certain that many readers freak out just reading the above set of references but the analysis concerns itself with the effect of this set on human behaviour and not on the correctness or acceptability of the contents. What is the effect of such statements on the behaviour of people who adopt and accept these statements as reference? Obviously the primary effect is behaviour, by the males, which ignores and does not consider any input from females because the female sex has been relegated to lesser level implying that females are only good enough to look after the household and basically be servants to the males of the house hold. This also implies that females, who are single and may find employment in a company, will not be given positions of responsibility and certainly male colleagues performing similar tasks will receive higher salaries. From the female point of view if these references have been accepted as valid then there is no resistance and no protestation. Even the fact that education may only be provided to males does not seem to cause any consternation among the females.
To all reasonable people the above set of statements will appear unacceptable and deprived of any fair or logical basis. Yet in reality there are people in today’s societies who have adopted such or similar framework of reference and their behaviour corresponds closely to the one detailed in the analysis above.
1) White meat, fish and chicken, is healthier than red meat like beef, lamp and pork due to the fact that it contains less cholesterol.
2) Unsaturated and poly-unsaturated fats are not as harmful as saturated fats. Therefore margarine is better than butter.
3) Vegetables, legumes and fruits are healthy and essential inclusions in daily diet.
4) The intake of too much sugar results in obesity and in some cases related diseases.
5) A balanced diet as far as quantity and variety of ingredients is beneficial for an overall healthy life.
Acceptance of the above set of references implies that one in determining the daily dietary schedule will make purchases and prepare meals in agreement with the contents of the above list. It is expected that the meals consist mainly of fish or chicken, plenty of vegetables, fruits and a significantly small amount of sweets.
1) It is necessary that one is aware of the plans, strategy and financial status of one’s competitors.
2) The purpose of a business venture is to maximise the profit for the investor or shareholder.
3) In order to eliminate competition one has the right to use all legal methods.
4) Deviation from ethical behaviour, provided there is no transgression of specific Law, is acceptable.
5) Companies are paying excessive tax to the state; therefore there is every justification in finding ways or loopholes within the Law, so that the company pays the least possible tax.
6) If there is a clash of interest between the labour force and the shareholders, the interest of the shareholders prevails.
Although at first glance it seems that the only limitation imposed on the businessman is the one requiring operation within the limits of the law, on the ethical side a lot of aspects are open to interpretation. For example one is required to know everything regarding the business of one’s competitors, which, among others, may be interpreted as permission to head-hunt employees of the competitors in order to utilise their knowledge to gain advantages over these competitors. How ethical is this practice? Also the fact that the shareholders’ interests prevail over the interests of employees, allows for the possibility of unfair treatment or manipulation of the workers, if this is to the interest of the shareholders.
1) River fishing, tuna or salmon, is a very exciting outdoor activity.
2) Chess and Texas Hold’em poker are very entertaining and brain challenging games.
3) Soccer is the best team game.
4) The best soccer team in the world is Barcelona
5) Barcelona can lose a game only when the referee is unashamedly favouring the opponents.
6) The supporters of all other teams are jealous of Barcelona’s successes and because they will do anything to discredit such a perfect team, they are low-lives who deserve to be taught lessons about respect and recognition of superiority.
This set of references starts with quite standard references but from statement (3) onwards, one gets the impression that something is really not normal. A person, who has adopted such a framework of references, will love spending time by a river fishing tuna or salmon and enjoying the freedom of the outdoors. Furthermore the same person will not refuse participating in a game of chess or taking part in a poker tournament behaving in a proper and civilised manner. BUT…place the same person in a stadium where the person’s favourite soccer team is competing against their biggest competitor. What would the person’s behaviour be when Barcelona is losing and the supporters of the other team are teasing and taunting Barcelona’s supporters? Possibly the behaviour will indicate anger, rage or even strong desire to physically cause harm to the opposition supporters? Anything is possible especially if these references are strongly endorsed by the individual. Over the last sixty or seventy years the world witnessed and experienced in many countries the phenomenon commonly termed as hooliganism. In all respects decent people get transformed into uncivilised thugs ready to cause damage to property and harm other people, the moment they find themselves in the environment of a sports game!! Hopefully from now on, one will not be surprised and bewildered by such behaviour knowing that it is due to the composition and contents of a reference folder contained in the control mechanism of one’s Mind. The encouraging fact, as it will be seen shortly, is the possibility that one may have the method and the power to change and improve the contents of the folder, therefore rectifying aspects of the references which are contrary to the dictates of decency and common sense.
Another folder with possibly controversial contents is the one addressing issues of racial dispositions. Two folders will be provided, in order to show the great differences which may exist between peoples’ attitudes and perceptions.
1) All men are born equal, irrespective of nationality, colour or creed. Each person must be judged on merit and not be bundled together with others of similar physical characteristics.
2) People given the same educational opportunities will on the average perform up to similar standards.
3) People belonging to different races behave differently only when they are kept isolated from each other in which case they may develop different traditions and manners of interaction with people.
4) A person’s religion is not an indicator of a person’s disposition towards violence.
The second folder will be specified and then both folders will be discussed simultaneously.
1) Of all the human races, race X is the most advanced and developed.
2) Members of race X are far superior, physically and intellectually, to the members of any other race.
3) Specifically members of race Y are born with an inclination towards criminal behaviour and members of Religion Z represent a danger to other races and followers of other Religions. As such they are not welcomed to countries inhabited by members of race X.
4) In a dispute between a member of race X and a member of any other race, the member of race X is probably right!
This example represents the diversity of beliefs which can exist among people, regarding even one single issue. A reader, who followed the discussion up to this point, is in a position to easily determine that the behaviour of those adopting folder 1, will be diametrically opposite to the behaviour of those adopting folder 2. Supporters of the first framework will not discriminate against people of other races and their behaviour will show adherence to the principles of equality, respect and fairness, while those who have adopted the second framework will display what can be described, in one word, as a “racist” behaviour! Now, it is understood that the difference in behaviour of the two groups of people is due to the difference between the two sets of references adopted by them, but this raises the question of why some people selected folder 1 and some others folder 2? What factors influenced the selection of folders and what tools are available in order to perform the original evaluation and selection? It is certain that if this question remains unanswered then one will not be aware of the exact effect many factors have on the selection process, therefore remaining unable to accurately evaluate the references and reach the best possible choice. The tools available to everyone in order to perform the evaluation and selection as well as the important factors which influence the entire or part of the selection process, will be discussed in great detail in a subsequent chapter. For the time being, the critical thing to consider is whether both groups of people were given both folders for evaluation and all necessary data, or if the respective selection was imposed on the people in one or another way. This is an important bit of information because it would enable one to conclude, with accuracy, if the adoption of the one or the other folder took place after free and proper consideration by the people, or if the people had no other option but to accept whatever folder was proposed to them, simply because they were not given or were not aware of the existence of an alternative option. If for example, one was raised in a society in which folder 2, the racist set of references, was overwhelmingly accepted by most members of the society and by one’s close friends and relatives, then it would be expected that this folder would be one’s natural or automatic choice. Of course this acceptance is not the result of any proper evaluation by the person concerned but just acceptance of what is perceived as the only option available. It would require above average insight in order for one to question or resist a set of references which is accepted by everyone else and for which apparently there is no alternative option on offer. From within the words of the last sentence one may extract the title of this book; because if one is given a set of references without supporting evidence or alternative options, in effect the freedom of one’s Mind is restricted, although this fact is not necessarily obvious to the individual. This restriction of freedom of the Mind is equivalent to placing one’s Mind into an invisible prison. However it will be seen in a future chapter, that there are ways and methods which if applied correctly may give indications not only of the correctness of the references, but also of the possible existence of alternative options and therefore prevent the enslavement of the Mind.
1) The government must be elected in a ballot whereby all citizens have the right to vote on an equal basis.
2) The constitution of the country must protect fully the human, individual and work rights of all citizens.
3) The State Tax System must be simple, fair and must promote entrepreneurship assisting in the creation of wealth for all.
4) There must be a clear separation between the roles of Church and State in the running of the country.
5) State finance policy must adhere to the free market principles and there may not be reservation of professions or restrictions on trading.
: This framework reflects principles of democratic governance and capitalistic ideology. The individual who adopts this set of references will support a democratic government and will stand by a constitution which is based on fairness, justice and protects citizens’ rights. Furthermore interference of the Church in the affairs of the State and vice versa is not acceptable and will be met with rejection and resistance by the individual. It is clear that such individual will also seriously resist anyone attempting to impose a totalitarian regime in the country.
The last example to be presented relates to a framework defining the outline of a morality code. This, very short and concise framework, stresses the known fact that simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.
1) Treat others in the same way as you would like them to treat you.
2) Respect, care and love your fellow humans as you respect, care and love your own self.
This summation of the ultimate moral behaviour is taken from the wisdom offered to the world by Jesus Christ from Nazareth. In its simplicity it urges humans to abide by all rules which logic and self preservation dictate. The two sentences above clearly describe behaviour which lengthy legal documents could only possibly define using thousands of words. Furthermore they ensure the harmonious co-existence of humans in civilised societies. The strength of this framework rests in its simplicity and the fact that it is based on straight forward logical principles. This should be borne in mind for when the evaluation and possible modification of references is discussed at a later chapter.
Hopefully, the few examples presented in this chapter were adequate to provide an understanding of the structure and possible contents of frameworks of references. Thousands of folders, referring to every imaginable life situation, exist and the final expression of human behaviour is defined by the control mechanism resulting from the selection and adoption of a combined set of a few folders out of the many thousands. One will rightly wonder if two different people may behave in exactly the same way should they adopt the same frameworks of reference. The quick answer is that it is highly unlikely, for the reasons which will be discussed in the next chapter.
It is reasonable to expect that members of the same community or the same society will have more or less similar options as far as availability of a variety of sets of references. This is due to the fact that they are raised under similar conditions, with regard to education, religion, legal system, politics and traditions, therefore are subjected to the same influences by the environment. The compilation of the folders serving as reference to the control mechanism of the human behaviour takes place from the moment of birth and continues for as long as the individual is alive. At the first stages of one’s development, these folders and references are accepted in a subconscious manner, without evaluation or critical analysis and the position of importance within one’s control mechanism is directly proportional to the intensity with which these references were introduced and installed into one’s Soul.
As mentioned earlier, there are two different situations under which one adopts references and makes them part of one’s Soul, or part of the control mechanism of one’s Mind:
1) At a very early age when one is not in a position to evaluate the various inputs and data which one receives from the environment, one accepts whatever is on offer from family members, teachers and other grown ups with whom one comes in contact. This is the time of great danger for the developing Soul and that is why child psychologists urge parents to be particularly vigilant regarding the behaviour and examples to which their children are exposed to. Knowing the fertile ground offered by very young and undeveloped Minds, many have taken advantage of the situation in order to guide or manipulate people towards a particular direction. The resistance to attempts of indoctrination is much more subdued or non existent when the individual is not mature enough to judge the validity of whatever is proposed. In human history there are millions of examples, originating mainly from political or religious concerns, showing the fervour by which these concerns use every possible method in order to captivate the Soul and Mind of young individuals. Many readers are familiar with the term “brain-washing”, which is nothing less than manipulating an individual to think and behave in a particular way rejecting outright any possible or logical alternative. The propaganda or manipulation experts are aware that inexperienced young individuals are much more susceptible to “brain-washing” than older and wiser ones. On the other hand, if sets of references, which are really beneficial to the individual and the society at large, are installed in one’s control mechanism at a very young age, most probably will result in the individual behaving in a generally commendable way.
2) The second situation of selecting and adopting a set of references, takes place when one has reached a level of maturity and is able to analyse and evaluate the desirability of applying and implementing new standards in one’s life. Stimuli from the environment, additional knowledge and random events present one with options to change or modify one’s beliefs which might result in a parallel change in the way one thinks and behaves. The difference though from the previous situation is that now the individual hopefully is in possession of the necessary tools, methods and skills so as to logically analyse the available data and reach valid conclusions. One, no more accepts un-tested or un-verified references and after filtering all inputs, one is able to adopt only those references which are based on evidence and logic. It is reasonable that the objective of such effort is to assemble a set of references which will ensure that one’s thinking and behaviour corresponds to reality and not to imaginary situations. This is important because behaviour and thinking, which does not relate to reality, places one outside the community of reasonable people. Consider for example the life-story of Michael Thervantes’s hero, the famous Don Quixote, who believed that wind-mills were enemy knights ready to attack him. Obviously the references implanted in the control mechanism of Don Quixote’s Mind included a statement describing wind-mills as representing enemy knights. This statement, far removed from reality, forced our hero to attack wind-mills and behave in a way which was termed by his compatriots as “crazy”. Admittedly though, such statement could have never been adopted by Don Quixote as true, unless the gentleman’s logic was also well short of the required standard.
The Soul or control mechanism of the human Mind assembles a great number of folders, with each folder referring to a certain area of human activity or situation. As mentioned in Chapter 2 one’s control mechanism contains three different types of folders, namely the “co-incident”, the “partially co-incident” and the “disengaged”. Only the “partially co-incident” folders are of interest because there is a possibility for a situation to arise which necessitates the control mechanism to reference two or more “partially co-incident” folders. In such a case and if there is conflict between the dictates of the folders, the individual will face a dilemma as to which way to act. This is why it is not enough to only adopt the huge range of folders which address every possible situation; one also needs to rank the importance of these folders and allocate a priority index to each one of them, so in case of a conflict between the contents of the folders, the folder associated with a higher priority index takes precedence.
The ranking of folders, according to their importance in one’s life, is relatively simple, because all one needs to do is to consider every statement and dictate, in respect to its correspondence with truth, reality and valued principles. Thereafter, each set of references is given an index number, let’s say between 1 and 20, representing the importance of its application in one’s control mechanism. Obviously only the top ten or twenty folders, concerning really important activities, need to be ranked individually while the rest may be placed in big groups which may carry the same priority index. Nevertheless the actual application and usage, of these folders by the Soul, gets complicated, because human reasoning, absolutely essential for the functioning of the control mechanism, is in many instances side-stepped in favour of human sentiments, passions and desires. It is critical to understand how these human attributes affect the manner in which references are applied. The following example demonstrates this effect:
Mr.X is a successful businessman and a good family man. Among the ten most important, for him, folders of references he adopted, included are folders containing standards relating to a morality code, state laws, social interactions, dietary habits, sports preferences and others. According to the ranking allocated by Mr.X to these folders, the most important position is taken by the morality code, having a ranking index of 10, followed by the state laws with an index of 9, the social interactions with index 6 and the sports preferences with an index 4. It is then expected that in situations in which a conflict arises between “partially co-incident” folders the hierarchy of ranking will provide the guideline for the resolution of the conflict. It is surprising therefore, to see Mr.X behaving in an unacceptable and out of character manner while attending a soccer game during which the referee made a few errors of judgement against Mr.X’s favoured team! What happened to the hierarchy indices regarding the standards of social interaction and the standards relating to sports preferences? Mr.X’s behaviour indicates that the hierarchy was reversed; instead of the dictates of good social contact prevailing, the preferences for the particular team enjoyed higher priority. The main and maybe the only reason that caused such reversal is the side-stepping of logic in favour of the human emotions of anger and passion. The hard reality is that in a situation whereby the human emotions overpower the process of “reasoning”, then one may exhibit behaviour uncharacteristic of one’s normal behaviour. One is aware of expressions such as, “out of character”, “crime of passion”, “motivated by greed”, “automatic response due to fear” and many others in similar vein. They all represent excuses offered in order to justify unexpected and possibly unreasonable behaviour by persons who under normal circumstances, or in the absence of human emotions, would have responded in a reasonable way.
The lesson, to be derived from the previous example, is that irrespective of how carefully one adopts sets of reference and how accurately these sets are ranked in a hierarchy of importance, they will be of little or no value in determining one’s behaviour, unless the Soul and the Mind are left alone, free of interference by one’s emotions, in the evaluation of the proper response in a given situation. Fortunately the cases, under which one would make a critical decision while subjected to severe emotional pressure, are on balance very few in comparison to the cases under which one’s “reasoning” is in control of the situation. Of course if one was devoid of human emotions while at the same time had in possession a collection of hierarchically ranked folders of references, then one would, without exception, behave always consistently and in full adherence to the contents of the folders. Humans though, are not robots and they have emotions and feelings which are needed in order to enhance the experience of living. The cost or price due, for having emotions, is behaviour which occasionally may be unexpected, unreasonable or even downright abhorrent.
The conclusion is that, if one has adopted sets of reference which one values and to which one has allocated an importance index according to one’s evaluation, then one has to keep at all times a cool head, side-step emotions and desires so that in any given situation one behaves in accordance to the approved references. Otherwise, one behaves erratically and possibly in a manner which may be judged by the rest of the society as being out of control or out of character
A reasonable question is: “Do people, who have adopted exactly the same folders of reference, behave in the same manner?”
The answer is: “Sometimes they do, but this is only due to coincidence and not due to the fact that their control mechanisms use the same folders of reference. The explanation is that the importance index for each folder may be different for different people. If for example two politicians have adopted exactly the same folder regarding “moral code” and exactly the same folder regarding “political practices” but the first politician allocates indices of importance of 9 and 8 respectively for the two folders, while the second politician allocates indices of 6 and 9, then in a given situation one would not be surprised if these two politicians behave differently. In addition one must take into consideration the fact that even if both politicians had allocated the same level of importance to the two folders, they may not be in the same emotional state at that specific time and therefore their control mechanisms may operate under different conditions resulting in different behaviour.”
If the emotional state of a person is critical as far as to how well one applies the adopted references, one assumes that the predisposition and feelings regarding a particular subject would be of similar importance during the process of one’s evaluation and indexing of a specific folder. Let it not be forgotten that such evaluation of references commences only at the age at which the individual has reached a significant level of maturity, by which time one had already been subjected to many influences from the environment, one’s family and one’s peers. In other words, one’s control mechanism had already been created and shaped by the inputs received from a multitude of sources, but were untested and unverified by the individual. If these references, already adopted, are allowed to interfere or influence the logic or reasoning process followed in the evaluation of additional sets of reference, one faces the risk of reaching erroneous conclusions, especially if the influencing references are not based on reality or they are deliberately misleading. An example from the area of racial relations will help clarify the issue:
Mrs.Y, a woman belonging to the “white race”, grew up in a country ravaged by racial tensions between the two main races, white and black, inhabiting the land. Her parents were farming corn and they were employing a lot of labourers belonging to both races. Although all labourers were treated fairly and according to the prevailing labour laws, senior foreman positions were in the majority given to white workers with the excuse that they possessed better skills than the black candidates, a reason strongly contested by the union of the black workers. This inequality in allocating senior positions among the two groups of employees led to infighting between white and black workers. During one such incident of serious labour unrest, Mrs.Y’s father was assaulted by a black labourer who hit him on the spine with a baseball batt resulting in her father becoming paralysed from the waist down. Mrs.Y was 12 years old at the time of the tragic event and since that time she found herself unable to befriend any person of the black race, accept blacks as human beings entitled to the same rights as the white people or credit them with the same intelligence and ability as the members of the white race. Unfortunately her emotional trauma from her father’s injury follows her in her career, her family and her social life. Her Soul’s folder, containing the references on racial relations, has been indelibly marked and it would require a very special and logical approach to a re-evaluation of these references if ever they are going to be modified in order to reflect reality and enable her to view black people as human beings, who in all respects, except skin pigmentation, are no different from the members of her own race. Just a single event was enough to distort Mrs.Y’s view of fellow humans, not for any important reason but just because they happen to have skin of a different colour.
There are plenty examples, regarding human behaviour, which show the effect of external influences on the way in which one’s folders of reference may have been altered or structured so that to an objective observer they would seem removed from reality or the truth.
Such noticeable and extreme instances, of references being either unreasonable or given an abnormally low or high index during prioritisation, are easily observable in folders regarding Religious, Political, Social or Racial standards.
Consider for example the behaviour of people who give a priority index of 20 to the Religion folder while the second in rank folder is the one containing the State Laws with a priority index of just 8. The index of the Religion folder overpowers the index of the State Laws folder to such an extent, so that in a case of conflict between the two, the Religion folder will always have the upper hand. There is a possibility therefore, that one endorsing the religious references to the exclusion of everything else may find it necessary to even resist the civil laws of one’s country. People with such strong conviction on religious issues are known as religious zealots and in some extreme cases as religious fanatics. As an exercise the reader is urged to have a look at the events taking place in the Middle East region, in countries like Syria, and Iraq, and identify the folders of reference adopted by the combatants in these countries providing an explanation as to the religious fanatism, cruelty and criminality exhibited by the warring factions.
Another example is the case in which one allocates index 18 to the folder of political references, index 12 to the folder of morality standards and index 10 to the folder of State Laws. What possible behaviour may be expected of such person? Well, the ranking of the main folders seems to indicate, that this person may not hesitate to push aside morality issues or even laws of the country, if ever there is a need for action to be taken in the political arena. In addition there is high probability suggesting that this person may use unethical and/or illegal means in order to achieve political objectives. If one reads the daily reports on politicians, worldwide, who get arrested for a variety of bribery scandals, corruption and various other illegal activities, one will realise that there are many politicians with an adopted reference ranking similar to the one mentioned in this paragraph.
This Chapter is concluded by providing a summary of its contents:
1) The formation of the Soul or control mechanism of human behaviour starts developing from the time of birth and continues through-out life.
2) The first folders of reference are planted into one’s Soul by the parents and immediate family. These references are accepted and adopted without any evaluation by the recipient.
3) When one reaches maturity, one adopts new references after evaluation. It is also possible that earlier accepted folders may be subjected to evaluation and modification.
4) The evaluation of the various references leads to the ranking and prioritisation of the folders by allocating an index grade to each folder.
5) Human feelings, sentiments and desires influence the integrity of the evaluation and may lead to illogical or unbalanced ranking. The same factors may also affect the application of the references by the control mechanism.
6) High evaluation indexing for a single set of references, to the exclusion of all other folders of reference, may result in the exhibition of extreme and undesirable behaviour, including hooliganism, racism, sexism and fascism.
The inputs and the lessons, which one receives at a very young age, are just as important to one’s life as the foundations are important to the construction of a house. Solid foundations ensure that the house is strong and will stand successfully against all sorts of bad weather or other natural events, like earthquakes, tornados and flooding. Acquiring a good set of references, at the beginning of one’s life, protects one’s Soul from malevolent influences, from wherever these may be coming. Unfortunately the reverse is also true. If one receives references which do not correspond to reality or they are intentionally put together by manipulators who wish to have control over one’s behaviour, then one may find it very difficult to rectify the situation for the simple reason that one may not even realise that one’s Soul has been compromised. The result is that one’s behaviour or actions will resemble the behaviour of a pre-programmed robot which obeys the instructions of its programmer, without hesitation or resistance. The last statement may appear far fetched, but if one recalls one’s childhood experiences and the many things one was taught or instructed about, at one’s early childhood, it will be realised that parents, teachers and family friends provide a lot of references which a young child adopts without any critical questioning or evaluation. Children born in religious families will receive tuition and instructions relevant to the faith of the parents and in all probability they become followers of the same religion. The same happens with political beliefs; someone growing in a communist country is more likely to become a communist than someone who grows in a capitalist country and vice versa.
The formation and original structuring, of the young Soul, is very important in determining the predominant characteristics of not only the child’s behaviour but also one’s behaviour in adulthood and possibly during the rest of one’s life. That is the reason why parents and teachers of young children carry on their shoulders tremendous responsibility for the way they guide, instruct and provide examples to the little ones. Whatever input is provided to the child, is used for the formatting and shaping of the young Soul, which at an early age is soft as clay and can be easily moulded.
The folders of reference, adopted during the childhood period, form the basis of one’s control mechanism which may remain unaltered for the rest of one’s life. If this original formulation of references is manifesting itself in behaviour which is acceptable to one’s fellow humans, then it means that these references are corresponding to the general feeling or perception of what constitutes “good behaviour”. It does not necessarily make the references correct or right but it makes one reluctant to re-evaluate or modify them. This brings to the fore the problem of defining, which could possibly be acceptable or desirable behaviour. Is there a universal perception of such definition? Sadly there is not, because it varies from society to society and even from country to country. Behaviour accepted and considered good in one’s country is not necessarily acceptable in someone else’s society or country. Different laws, different traditions and even different moral rules, ensure the absence of standardisation of behaviour between many human societies. There is only one eventuality under which people would have achieved a high degree of commonality in behaviour and that is if they all had the same beliefs regarding the purpose of their existence, the origins of such existence and the Creator responsible for the creation of everything. In other words universal belief in the same God would have provided the necessary references in order to have greater commonality especially between folders relating to important issues like morality, justice, freedom and human rights. However the existence of a universally acceptable God (those readers, interested in the subject, are kindly advised to read my eBook titled “A Grain of Sand”), or the categorisation of behaviours, are not the concerns of the current discussion. The objective is to identify methods and means by which one may apply modifications, to already adopted folders of reference, in the way one, consciously and after proper evaluation, has decided to do it.
A relatively straight forward procedure, which may achieve the objective, can be summarised in the following three statements:
1) One makes a list of folders of reference which one considers extremely important in one’s life.
2) The contents of each folder are analysed in depth and questions like “Why this reference is considered valid?” or “Does this reference meet the rules of reasoning?” or even “Is there enough evidence to support the claims made by the statements included in the folder?”
3) Statements and references which fail to meet the criteria of reasoning, need to be eliminated from the folder, while statements which are not supported by hard evidence, need to be given much less importance in the application of the folder in determining behaviour.
Statements and references identified in step 2 or step 3 of the procedure as invalid, illogical or unsupported by evidence, should cause alarm bells to start ringing in one’s head. The reason is that one may have stumbled upon references which are either not logical or not supported by evidence and which are present in one’s Soul, controlling one’s Mind and therefore one’s behaviour! This may result in behaviour which either does not conform to reality or is guided towards a predetermined direction. It also indicates that references, which had not been evaluated by one, were invisibly residing within one’s control mechanism without one’s conscious approval, yet influencing one’s Mind and subsequent activities and behaviour. Some of these references or whole sets of references were introduced into one’s Soul by one’s parents, teachers or environment, when one was very young and immature. Although the motives for the introduction of such references are not subject of the present analysis, one cannot exclude the possibility that one’s Soul is compromised by such introduction, with the objective of controlling one’s behaviour. Glaring examples, of deliberate indoctrination of people at a very young age, are provided by the methods employed by organised Religion and the propaganda dished out by authoritarian political regimes. It is therefore absolutely essential that at some point in one’s life, one revisits all references residing within one’s Soul, with the aim of cleaning up the various folders by maintaining only those references which correspond to reality and to the consciously selected way of behaving. If one ignores the evaluation of references, one may be behaving as per the wishes of other people and not as per one’s own judgement and freedom of thought. In other words, one’s Mind may be restricted within invisible prisons imposing limitations to its freedom, expression and creativity.
The following examples, mentioned without specific analysis, serve well as a good exercise for the reader who wishes to test his or her level of understanding of Mind control and enslavement:
1) During the Middle Ages, there was a great fight between the almighty Catholic Church and all disciplines of Science. The result was the retardation, for many centuries, of progress in technology and Science. How was the Church able for so many years to win the fight against scientific evidence?
2) How effective was Hitler’s propaganda in persuading the German nation that the Jewish community was responsible for the bad financial situation of Germany, prior to the start of World War 2? What was the index of importance of the racial relations folder embedded in most hard core Nazi leaders and followers?
3) For many decades and up to 1995 China was a country applying one of the most oppressive socio-economic forms of communism. Suddenly, China started changing its political system to reflect many aspects of capitalism including more freedom for the Chinese citizens and Chinese markets. Could this change have taken place without a serious re-evaluation and subsequent modification of the political and economic references which previously existed in the Chinese leaders Minds?
Detecting the presence of unverified references is a first significant step towards taking control of one’s subsequent behaviour. Not all such folders are implanted into one’s Soul with malevolent intentions; some are actually essential so that one becomes a well adjusted member of one’s society. Nevertheless, it is proper that everything, which is part of one’s control mechanism of one’s Mind, to be examined and evaluated against the rules of reasoning and solid evidence. In order to derive the best results out of such evaluation, one must use the only two elements in one’s possession, namely the ability to receive and the ability to analyse data in a logical process. Obviously the receiving of data takes place via the five human senses and the logical processing of this data is controlled by the human brain. At this point, one needs to remember the effect of feelings and emotions on the integrity of the logical process of data. If emotions are allowed to influence the objective processing of data, then the integrity of the evaluation may be seriously compromised. Another issue which may have an adverse effect on the integrity of the evaluation process is the possible selective gathering of data due to personal desires or preferences. If for example one allows preconceived impressions, about a certain issue, to influence the gathering of data or evidence so that they favour only a specific aspect of the issue, then the conclusion will most certainly not be objective and the evaluation will be worthless.
In summary, one, who wishes to examine if there are any hidden references influencing one’s behaviour, has at one’s disposal two facilitating aids which assist in the performance of such examination. These aids are the ability to collect data from the environment via one’s senses and the ability to reason using one’s brain. In order that the task is carried out with objectivity and integrity, one must not permit interference from any source including one’s own feelings, emotions and desires.
The process of reference evaluation may appear daunting, but in reality it can be carried out with relative ease and speed, if one’s efforts are concentrated at the first few most important folders of reference, because these cover more than 99 per cent of common daily activities.
At the end of the evaluation, hopefully all major known and previously unknown folders, which are responsible for the formulation and structuring of one’s behaviour, would have been correctly identified, accepted, rejected or modified and ranked. This means that the freedom of human Mind to act and respond within limits imposed only by logic, reality and truth, has been restored and it is no more restricted by unsubstantiated beliefs or beliefs which are either illogical or pure creations of human imagination. Following a successful evaluation, one’s behaviour is dictated by a control mechanism, which is free of foreign interference or influence, and consists of filters and references which satisfy one’s most important criteria based only on knowledge and common sense.
Achieving the clean up of the control mechanism of the Mind, is something really remarkable, although it does not necessarily mean that the end result is in any way perfect or that it meets with universal acceptance. It simply indicates that the framework of references, used in the control of one’s behaviour, reflect one’s personality as perceived by the particular individual and without modification by factors outside one’s knowledge or control.
But just the process of analysing the folders and evaluating the references provides one with an invaluable skill useful in many spheres of human endeavour. The skill is none other than the ability to identify, just by observing one’s behaviour, a whole lot of character and personality characteristics which lead directly to the structure of the observed individual’s Mind control mechanism. In other words the experience, of handling one’s own control mechanism of the Mind, makes one expert in understanding the references and their priority in the Soul of any other individual. This type of deep understanding is helpful in human interactions because people, who understand each other, achieve a much better level of communication and find it easier to resolve problematic issues in their relationship. This relationship can be one of simple friendship or of partnership in business or of intimate nature, but whatever it is, it has a better chance of reaching fulfilment if the people involved understand each other’s references and their respective importance in their control mechanism ranking.
Some examples of areas, where the skills acquired from the process of reference evaluation may be applied, are the following:
a) Knowledge of the predominant or expected behaviour of the customer base of a business constitutes a good advantage in the marketing and selling the products of the business. Consider the example of the company which manufactures taste enhancing cubes made of compressed bovine or poultry extract. It would obviously be a mistake to spend money for marketing and distributing such product in a country or area in which the population are predominantly strictly vegans due to the dictates of their religion.
b) Entering into negotiations concerning Labour demands or disputes, it would be very useful if one could determine the expected behaviour of the negotiating counter-party by detecting the main reference folders and their importance, which obviously influence the negotiating behaviour of the counter-party. It is similar to a game of Chess during which one of the players knows in advance the other player’s move.
c) The purpose of a job interview is to gauge the skills of the applicant in relation to the job requirements, as well as to get a feeling of the personality characteristics and predict the behaviour of the future employee within the work environment. The interviewer must be prepared, with relevant questions, so as to get a complete picture not only of the skills but also of the main references which are valued and applied by the applicant’s Mind control mechanism. It is important for example that, if the spectrum of employees in a company includes different nationalities or races, the prospective employee, besides the ability to perform the task well, should not harbour any xenophobic feelings or racist attitudes.
Expressions like “These two are made for each other” or “A match made in heaven” are simply saying that from the behaviour of certain people one can safely deduce that they are in full agreement on everything; from the food they eat to the music they listen, to the political party they support and even to the Religion they follow. Friendships or love affairs, like these, are destined, according to everyone’s opinion, to withstand the wear of time! Yet, one sees many such relationships suddenly breaking down leaving friends and relatives in shock for the totally unexpected turn of events. It is not strange at all, but a more detailed look at the personalities, involved in the relationship, may reveal that there were indeed severe differences in one of the reference folders which due to the private nature of the folder may not have been obvious to outside observers or to even close relatives and friends. One may consider the all too common example of sexual incompatibility, which may mean simply that one of the partners considers, according to the references contained in the relevant folder on the subject of Sex, that sex between people who love each other is a beautiful and enjoyable way to express one’s love, while the other considers sex to be just a necessary act which should be performed with the lights switched off, without any sort of sinful pleasure and only in order to procreate. Such relationship usually will not survive for long even if the partners are in full agreement on everything else.
The way, for one to avoid entering into a relationship which has a high probability of failure, is to evaluate as close as possible all the critical references and folders adopted by the prospective friend, lover or partner and evaluate the compatibility with one’s own references and relative importance ranking. Admittedly it is not an easy task given the ability of humans to act by hiding true beliefs and behave in a manner different than true conviction especially if they sense that they are under some type of testing or evaluation. Therefore one needs to be careful, patient and devise clever and non offending methods of probing the inner world of one’s prospective partner, friend or lover.
For people who envisage a career in politics or who wish to convey a political message, it could be very useful to have a forewarning of the collective behaviour and attitude of their audience towards the various political issues which need to be addressed. This would enable one to approach these issues with the proper sensitivity towards the audience’s disposition, avoid confrontation and receive favourable response to one’s proposals. It is, for example, seriously doubtful if a proponent of human rights will ever manage to be elected in a prominent political position in a constituency where racism is widespread among its citizens. Similarly it would be very difficult for a believer in a totalitarian type of governance to gain support in a purely democratic society. However one could increase significantly one’s chances of attracting support from a disagreeable audience, if one had the skill to identify the reasons behind the disagreement and its intensity, making sure that one’s approach is adjusted so it does not exceed the sensitivity limit of the audience. The secret is usually adopting a non aggressive approach in the presentation of one’s position, always supporting one’s arguments with the same reasoning one used in order to evaluate and adopt the ideas one is now proposing to the audience. It must be remembered that in adopting these references, one did not permit the involvement of feelings or emotions, therefore the same recipe should be followed in one’s attempt to promote one’s beliefs to other people.
Handling disagreements, relating to Religion and Faith, is a rather tricky business due to the following single critical factor; when one attempts the evaluation of the relevant folder, the cardinal rule, of not allowing feelings, emotions or personal desires to interfere with the evaluation, is violated due to the fact that supporting evidence required by the reasoning process, does not exist. One is forced to make ad-hoc assumptions and therefore the set of references in the folder are not based on undisputed real evidence but on totally subjective and mainly axiomatic principles. Certainly every Religion claims that its founding principles emanate directly from the Creator of the Universe, but, without judging the validity of such claims, one has to admit that acceptance of this claim is simply based on Faith and not on evidentiary data. As a result, human imagination, desires, emotions and feelings find fertile ground to grow and appear in suggestions that may even defy logic. This explains the fact that there are hundreds of religions in existence today and thousands more were rather short-lived over the last ten thousand years of human progression to civilisation. Reality demands that everything which one may claim must be sooner or later validated by solid evidence, otherwise either people will lose interest and relegate the importance of what is claimed down to the “suspect” or “junk” level, or evidence will surface which proves the claim to be false. In both cases such claims diminish in value and eventually they are forgotten by everyone.
Given the above discussion, on the absence of supporting evidence for the majority of religious claims, someone, who understands the methods and arguments presented in previous Chapters of this book, would follow the rules of evaluation and allocate a very low index of importance to the references regarding Religion. Yet, today one stands witness to unimaginable atrocities performed against humanity by people who are prepared to die and kill other fellow humans claiming that their God or religion regards followers of other religions as sinners who have to be eliminated! This is indeed a prime example of people whose Mind has been enslaved to such an extent as to allocate an extremely high index of importance to the unverified references on their Religion, while at the same time ignoring altogether the references on morality, human rights, decency, justice, freedom and everything else valued by civilised people. These values are the ones which probably may assure the long term survival of the human species, yet the religious fanatics, perpetrators of these atrocities, are devoid of the basic ability to be human because their Mind and Consciousness have been totally neutralised. They have essentially become pre-programmed automatons carrying out activities on behalf of their programmer and master. The main blame for such unacceptable behaviour falls naturally on those responsible for embedding, in the Soul of these people, references and standards which have no relationship with reality and they are devoid of any kind of evidentiary support. Their parents, their teachers, the clerics serving in their churches and their immediate environment carry the greatest portion of blame, while the perpetrators are only responsible for never having evaluated these references using their natural ability to “reason” and their knowledge of reality. A mitigating factor absolving them from a great portion of the blame is that maybe the enslavement of their Soul and Mind took place when they were at such young age as to be unable to apply any sort of judgement on what was proposed or suggested to them, adopting therefore these references without any resistance. A continuous indoctrination ensures that these people never get the motivation or opportunity to spend time and calmly, without external interference, re-evaluate the references and the importance index allocated to the religion folder, thus remaining for ever enslaved by the original references implanted in their Soul.
Will humanity ever eliminate this modern version of religious wars which, like similar disputes hundreds of years ago, nearly destroyed the world and severely retarded the progress of civilisation? The answer would have been an emphatic and disappointing “No”, because the solution could only be provided by the presence of a Real and universally acceptable Creator, who satisfies the intellectual and spiritual requirements of all humans. Such feat proved, for thousands of years, elusive defying every attempt of discovering a God who would enjoy universal acceptance. Luckily a few months ago, in October 2015, the revelation of Unigod, as a real entity which satisfies all requirements of a universally acceptable deity, goes a long way in opening the road towards the unification of faiths. Up to the middle of 2016 there is no response, negative or positive, from the scientific or theological community on the evidence presented and the logic used in the unveiling of Unigod. The explanation could be that either people are still not aware of the revelation, or that they are hesitant to accept the simplicity of the proposed theory for the resolution of an issue which vexed the world for thousands of years. Nevertheless, it is certain that within the next few years, Unigod will be accepted by all reasonable and objective people as the only valid answer to the question of World Creation and the existence of a real God. The known saying “Truth has infinite patience and no expiry date” is fully applicable in this case. Therefore, one may now have a reasonable hope of avoiding destructive religious conflicts and look forward to a better and peaceful future for the human species.
Closely linked to the Religion and Faith folder, is the set of references which describe the moral boundaries of human behaviour as demanded and prescribed by the principles adopted by the acceptance of the Religion and Faith folder. The importance of the morality references in the long term survival of any Religion is paramount, because, in a way, it represents the guidance in order to practically implement the principal teachings of the particular religion in one’s life. If this guidance is found to be untrue or misleading then people will abandon the relevant Religion. Morality, which is based on logic and reality, has a much better chance of having many followers and therefore surviving for a long time. On the other hand, morality which outflows from an invisible and therefore imaginary God has very little chance of long survival, because the references eventually will be disproven by the reality of life.
One’s task in evaluating a set of morality references, or generally any other set of references, is to determine if the requirements of such references are justified by the demands of logic and knowledge. If it is found that there are contradictions between whatever is proposed by the references and whatever knowledge or reasoning dictate, then such references must be rejected. It has to be stressed again that such evaluation will produce correct outcomes only if there is at least average ability to reason and evidence backed knowledge. In the absence of any of these two requirements the results will be proportionally valueless and invalid. Herein, hidden is the great risk that one spends one’s life-time serving non-existent or baseless objectives, fulfilling other peoples’ interests and not necessarily those corresponding to truth and reality.
The examples provided, referring to the major reference folders which are important in everyone’s life, represent just one small portion of the areas where re-evaluation of one’s standards of reference is an essential element of personal character and behavioural improvement. Yet, this is not the greatest benefit derived from this time consuming and sometimes arduous procedure. The most important benefit is that one gets the opportunity to regain or re-establish the indisputable human right to enjoy the maximum degree of freedom to think and act to one’s own and the society’s best benefit. It must not be forgotten that this most precious right may have been lost at a very young age, due to the wrong references been offered by the parents, the teachers and the immediate environment. The process of re-examining all original references is perhaps one of the most worthy tasks which one would undertake in a lifetime. It is obvious that such task, once having started is never completed but it continues, albeit in a much lower intensity, throughout life. The reason is that, as one’s knowledge and wisdom increases with the passing of time, it becomes necessary to revisit references which were previously adopted but now require modification in order to conform to latest evidence. This is how personal development takes place.
In addition to the main benefits already mentioned above, one develops the skill to probe, question and identify the main personality and behaviour references which are dominant in other peoples’ control mechanisms, thus enabling better and more effective communication with them. This skill also enables better understanding of the personality and beliefs of others, resulting in an increased probability of mutual understanding.
Another, important benefit, is that one who understands the functioning of the Soul and the structure of the reference folders used by this control mechanism, has the opportunity and skill to develop a personal set of references which formalises the way one wishes to appear to the rest of the world. In other words one is enabled to design the framework to which one’s behaviour must conform. Finally, among the important benefits, one should include the expertise in identifying and preventing attempts by other people to indoctrinate one’s Soul with references or instructions which aim to make one subservient to their wishes. The only two weapons at one’s disposal, logic and knowledge, are sufficient to safeguard one from malevolent attempts to enslave one’s Mind and transform one into a willing servant to someone else’s demands.
