HeartBeats: Pretend

“Mr. Casanova is so gonna melt any moment if won’t stop staring at him” a voice interrupted my day dreaming and though I hate to tear away my gaze from the hot player at the basketball court dribbling the ball I spun around to face my bestfriend munching a chocolate bar with a glint of annoyance in her face.

“Oh Starl when did you get here”

“A couple of minute, in time to watch you jaw-dropping at that playboy jerk”

“Starl” I muffled a protest.

“What? You’re gonna tell me he’s not for the billionth times again? Huh!” Starl snorted as she dumped her duffel bag on the bleachers.

“I know you don’t like him for me but you have to get to know him too. I mean he’s nice” I insisted in his defense.

“Whatever” Starl rolled her eyes on me as she took another bite of her chocolate.

I sighed and sat next to her.

“He’s my boyfriend now, if you’re my friend you should at least get to know him before judging him.”

“Alex, I’m not spouting lies here. He’s a dumbass player. I don’t want you to get hurt”

“You don’t have to worry about me, I know what I’m doing. I promised you that no one’s going to get hurt”

I could feel my vocal cord vibrating so I know I was the one saying those things but why does it hurts so much?

“I know you’re the one taking the risk because you love him but isn’t it time for you to wake up to this ridiculous dream!”

“Starl you don’t understand, you know I loved him since middle school”

“so what! He never glanced at you since now, what makes you think it will make a difference. He will always be that cold-hearted player that cares only for himself”

“Shut up! Starl, what makes you think you have the right to judge him. I have my own mind, you don’t have to tell me what to do”

As soon as I let those words crumbles out of my mind I immediately regretted it when I saw the pain reflected on my bestfriend’s face. I opened my mouth to say something but I remain voiceless.

“I don’t think I’m talking to the same bestfriend I’ve known since childhood right now, how could he change your perception in just a week” Starl snapped at me. She grabbed her bag and with a look of disappointment written all over her face, she strode away.

I felt like all my energy was drained to the last drop. We never fought like that before and now only because—

I turn my eyes to my boyfriend and I saw him gave me a wave then dunk. He picked up the ball and handed it to one of his teammates before running toward me dripping in sweat.

“Sorry I got you waiting” he said as he climbed up the bleachers and took the towel from me.
