Emma’s Christmas Miracle

By Heidi Nel

Emma woke up early. Her heart beat with excitement, she could not wait to open her presents under the Christmas tree. She just knew that it was going to be a beautiful day. She ran down the stairs. Emma sat down by the huge Christmas Tree and looked in awe at the beautifully wrapped gifts. Without further ado, she started opening her gifts, and her eyes widened with surprise. She had unwrapped a cellphone, and a huge box of chocolates. She jumped up in an overjoyed manner and embraced her mother and father thanking them for the lovely presents. She had bought some perfume for her mother, and an ornamental vase, and some aftershave for her father, and a brand new mug, all with her own pocket money, and they seemed pleased with their gifts too.

Emma was a bright little girl of eleven years old with brown pigtails and huge green eyes. As she stood there with a dreamy expression on her face, she knew exactly what would make Christmas perfect. She wanted a miracle. Her Sunday school teacher had told the whole class about the amazing story of the birth of sweet baby Jesus, and what his birth meant to all the people of this world. From that moment she also wanted a miracle for herself on Christmas day, her very own special miracle. She was still standing on the verandah thinking about her miracle, when her mother called her. She let go of her thoughts, opened the front door, and went inside. She went straight to the dining room and walked to her mother who was seated on one of the dining room chairs.

It’s a lovely day and I can hardly wait to saddle up my new horse that I got for Christmas and go for a nice long gallop.”

Her mother smiled. Then she said, “I hope that you like your new horse. It’s a mare, and when you go for a ride on her, you’ll get to know her. Her name is Perose.”

Emma gasped in wonder. “Oh, mother. Perose is a beautiful name”, she said. Next, she walked to her father. He also hugged her affectionately. “Good morning, Pumpkin, and Merry Christmas. We must make this a lovely Christmas Day and as memorable as possible”, he said.

Then she went and sat down on the dining room chair opposite her mother, and while she ate a delicious breakfast, she thought about her father who always called her by her nickname Pumpkin. She loved her father very much. While sipping her orange juice, she thought about her mother too. She loved her mother a whole lot, and she knew that both her parents loved her too. They spoilt her and she was a happy little girl. They lived in a charming house on a homestead on the outskirts of Port Alfred. Port Alfred is a very pretty and picturesque town in the Eastern Cape. Emma found life on the homestead very interesting. She loved going for long walks and she loved horse riding, and even though it seemed like she had it all, she couldn’t help but feel that there was something missing in her life.

After they had all unwrapped their gifts, Emma went for a ride on her new horse, Perose. The more she rode, the more she enjoyed it.

She was starting to bond with her horse, and it was a very special moment for her. Her horse had a great personality, and she was very obedient. She was also very eager to please. She was galloping in the field, feeling the warmth of the sun on her face, when all of a sudden she pulled in the horse’s reins, bringing Perose to a complete standstill, because a grey cat was lying directly in front of Perose’s huge hooves. Emma quickly

dismounted from her horse and talked to the grey cat. She didn’t hesitate. She bent down and picked it up in her arms.

The cat was so thin and it looked extremely hungry, and frightened, so she held it to her chest and stroked it, and said, “It’s okay, Kitty. Don’t be

afraid. I’ll take care of you. Oh,you poor thing.” Her voice was soothing, and the cat snuggled closer to her. It was trembling, and Emma

continued stroking it. She just felt so sorry for the cat. As she was stroking it, she suddenly remembered that she had four tiny sausage rolls in the

front pockets of her jeans. She hastily took it out and fed it to the cat who ate it hungrily and it tore at little Emma’s heart strings. It then looked at

her as if to say, “More please”, and right there and then Emma made a decision. She was going to keep the cat. She knew that her parents wouldn’t

mind. Besides, she felt that she and the cat had found each other, and already a very strong bond was developing between them. Without wasting

any more time, she kept the cat with her as she climbed back onto her horse, Perose, and trotted home. It was the grey cat’s first experience of an

actual horse ride, and he didn’t complain one bit. In fact, he seemed to enjoy the ride as much as Emma, and he seemed quite taken with Perose.

When Emma got to the stable, she dismounted from her horse, and she put the cat down on the ground beside her. Then she quickly unsaddled her horse, and took the bridle off. She led the horse to the paddock so that it could graze there. The cat followed her, and when Perose lowered her head to sniff the cat out of curiosity, the cat didn’t jump back in fright. It could sense that Perose was a good natured horse, and so it started licking Perose on the head in a very friendly manner. Emma could hardly believe what she was seeing. It pleased her greatly that her horse Perose and her new friend, the grey cat, got along so well. She waited for the grey cat to finish licking Perose on the head, and then she picked it up in her arms, and carried it all the way home.

Her parents were sitting on comfortable chairs on the verandah, and they looked at her in surprise when she put the grey cat down on the floor in front of them, and proudly announced, “This is my new friend, and I’m going to name her Miracle. She was lying right in front of Perose’s huge hooves, so I picked her up and brought her home with me. She’s such a lovely cat, and she gets along fine with Perose. Ooh, I love this cat and I want to keep her.”

Her mother looked at her father, and the two of them smiled at each other. Then her father said in a friendly tone of voice, “You may keep her if you promise to take good care of her. She seems to be a likeable cat. If the cat makes you happy, Pumpkin, then the cat stays.”

Emma’s eyes shone with such great joy. She hugged her father, and then she gave her mother a big hug too. “Thank you father, I promise to take very good care of my new cat, and she does make me very happy.

She and her parents were still busy smiling at each other, and they were talking about Christmas, and none of them noticed the huge scary snake that slithered from the green grass onto the verandah. Only when the grey cat with the brand new name of Miracle made a meeowing sound, did they look down onto the floor of the verandah, and saw the snake.

Emma’s mother gasped with fright, and Emma’s father felt a chill run all the way down his spine. Emma felt too shocked to move away from the

snake. She felt so afraid, and she stared at the snake, hoping that it wouldn’t bite her. Then, oh dear! The snake lashed out at her without warning,

and it would surely have bitten her if it wasn’t for Miracle, who came to her rescue. The grey cat pounced on the snake and bit it ferocious, killing

it on the spot, and by doing that she saved Emma’s precious life. Emma’s mother felt so much relief, and she bent down to pick up the grey cat.

She started feeding it meat pie that was in a plate on a nearby table. The cat had never tasted anything so delicious before, and as she ate, she

started purring contentedly.

Emma’s father stood up and filled a bowl with fresh drinking water for the grey cat. Then he patted the grey cat affectionately on the head, and said gratefully, “Thank you for saving my daughter’s life.” He gave his daughter a big bear hug, and then he bent down to pick up the dead snake so that he could get rid of it. Emma stood there knowing that she had got her miracle…in more ways than one. She also knew that now there was nothing missing in her life. She felt happier than ever before, and when the cat looked at her with love in its eyes, she smiled with a smile straight from her heart.

Emma’s Christmas Surprise

By Heidi Nel

Eleven year old Emma woke up very early on the morning just after Christmas. She quickly brushed her teeth, and washed her face. Then, she brushed her brown hair, and got dressed in her favorite jeans, and a pretty pink blouse. She also put on a pair of brown boots, and after all that, she was ready to face the day. She walked out of her room, and went straight to the dining room where she sat down for breakfast.

Her mother, who was also seated at the dining room table, looked at her smilingly, “Morning, Emma. It sure is a great day for waking up early. The sun is out and the weather is perfect for horse riding.”

Emma drank some of her orange juice. Then she said, “Morning, Mother. I’m definitely going to ride my horse today, and I also want to play with my new cat, Miracle.”

Just then, her father entered the dining room, he said warmly, “Morning, Pumpkin. You’re up bright and early.”

Emma greeted her father with a pleasant smile. Then she said, “I thought I’d get up early, because I have a lot to do today, and if I get an early start, then it’s so much better.”

She ate her boiled egg and some toast, and looked at her father. Her father was a very hard working man. Her father almost always called her Pumpkin. Luckily, she didn’t mind being called Pumpkin. She enjoyed it. She loved her mother and her father dearly. Here on the homestead she was free to be herself, and she could enjoy riding on her horse and playing with her cat, and doing a whole lot of other interesting things that she enjoyed doing. For her, it was country living at its best. She ate her breakfast hastily, because she was so looking forward to her horse ride.

After breakfast, she went for an enjoyable ride on her new horse, Perose. She looked around her, hoping to spot her grey cat, Miracle, but Miracle was nowhere to be seen. Perose was extremely frisky, and she pranced around excitedly, and as they trotted across the field, she felt a wee bit worried about her cat, Miracle.

After her horse ride, she unsaddled Perose, and took her bridle off, and then she scratched Perose’s neck and smiled as the horse closed her eyelids in joyful contentment. She knew that Perose just loved human company, so she spent some extra time with her. Afterwards she went home, and she felt relieved when she saw that her grey cat, Miracle was lying outstretched on one of the comfortable chairs on the verandah. “There you are, Miracle. I’ve been looking all over for you”, she said in a overjoyed voice. She sat down on the comfortable chair as well, and picked Miracle up and gave her a huge hug. Then she stroked her cat lovingly. The cat really had a very sweet nature. As the warm sun shone down brightly upon them, the strong bond between Emma and her furry cat, Miracle, grew a whole lot stronger. The moments that she spent with her cat felt really special. It was these moments that really gladdened her heart.

In the days that followed, Miracle would disappear for hours at a time, and then little Emma would look all over for her, and worry about her constantly. Then, Miracle would reappear miraculously, and Emma would stop worrying, and she would smile again, and she would sit on the verandah, and stroke her cat so very lovingly. They encouraged Emma’s friendship with the cat. It somehow helped to develop Emma’s character in a beautiful way.

One day Emma decided to go for a nice long walk in the field. At the age of eleven she was already in love with nature. She just loved walking in the field for long moments and while she walked, she soaked up all the beautiful and amazing sounds that she heard. She especially loved to listen to the chirping sounds of the birds in the trees. It was her special treat for the day. As she walked, the sun shone down upon her, and suddenly she came to an abrupt standstill, and listened very carefully. She heard a different sound in nature, and it sounded a whole lot like meeowing…

With a very brave heart she walked directly to some bushes, and right there in the bushes, she gasped with surprise, because there, right in front of her lay her cat, Miracle, while four thirsty little kittens drank milk from her. Emma gasped again, and then she turned around quickly, and ran all the way home. She picked up the biggest carton box that she could find in the kitchen, and ran all the way back to Miracle, and her four kittens. She picked the kittens up one by one, and put them in the carton box very carefully. Then she knelt down by Miracle, and stroked her gently, while saying tenderly, “So this is where you kept disappearing to for hours at a time. You had little kittens to tend to. Oh, you’re such a darling cat.”

She stood up and carried the box all the way home, while Miracle walked at her side, all the while keeping her eyes on the box.

Emma’s mother and father were both sitting on a couch in the lounge when Emma surprised them by walking up to them and putting the box down on the floor. “Miracle gave birth to four kittens recently, and that’s why she kept disappearing for a few hours each day”, she told her parents excitedly.

“Oh, they’re so adorable”, said her mother in awe. “Where on earth did you find them?”

Emma smiled fondly at the kittens. Then she said to her mother, “I went for a walk in the field, and I heard the kittens meeowing in the bushes. So I put them in the carton box and brought them home, because this is where they belong.”

While she was talking, Miracle had climbed into the box to be closer to her beloved kittens, and they started drinking milk from her. Emma laughed happily and said delightedly, “Ooh, Miracle just loves her four adorable little bundles of joy. They’re so cute. Ooh…just look at them.”

In that short while, the kittens had managed to find their way into Emma’s heart, as well as her parent’s hearts. So when Emma asked her father for permission to keep the tiny kittens, her father nodded his head smilingly. Emma just knew that it was one of the happiest moments of her life.

Miracle looked at her kittens with pride in her eyes. She and her four kittens seemed happy in the carton box, so Emma decided to keep them in the box. “I’m so glad that I found them in time, and brought them home, because they’re a whole lot safer here than in the bushes”, she said to her parents in a relieved tone of voice. Her mother stroked Miracle gently while the cat fed her kittens. Then she said, “Oh, they’re just so sweet.”

This is Emma’s favorite kitten.

Emma then received a big hug from her father first and then from her mother too. She gazed at Miracle with such a great amount of affection, and she knew in her heart that she loved her cat even more. She also loved her four little kittens dearly. They seemed to hanker after love, and she was ready to give them a whole lot of love, because they deserved it. Although Christmas had passed, Emma felt that Miracle’s kitten’s was a late and miraculous Christmas gift and it was a wonderful and awesome surprise. Emma looked at Miracle, and she couldn’t stop smiling
