Preface

In my career as an artist I have always maintained a strong interest in the connection between painting and photography. As an amateur photographer, it has been my practice to always have my camera with me to document imagery that visually speaks to me. These photographic images have remained in my portfolios or computer files and were never exhibited. Through this work, I am starting the process of organizing and putting some of my photographs into a published format.

Introduction

I have always had a need to document my environment in photography. Because I have lived my entire life in or near a downtown area, I have been drawn to the downtown as a primary subject in my photographs.

In this monograph I have selected some of my photographs of downtown Hattiesburg, Mississippi. They are primarily from 1968 -- 1969; I was 25/26 years old at the time. This was the Hattiesburg business district still concentrated in the location where it was originally formed. It was pedestrian friendly, populated by many wonderful small businesses, and had a unique local flavor.

I have selected 34 of these images for a glimpse into Hattiesburg of this era.
