PART 1

REPS, that’s what we call them. They are humans, although I think were humans is a better way to put it. Unlike the rest of us, the Reps are infected with a virus. We don’t know what it is or where it came from; what we do know is that it first hit the city of Durban, then slowly spreading throughout the rest of the country.

At first, we thought the virus only killed people, but we soon found out that it did more than that. Much, much more. After the infection and the supposed death, The Syndrome (I know, I know a dumb name, but we really don’t know anything about it) began to mutate the corpses. These stages were documented and even now, after all this time, we still don’t understand it.

Stage One: After six agony-filled days the infected dies. Stage Two: the corpse solidifies (it becomes so hard that not even a sledgehammer can do any damage to it), this stage takes about two hours to complete. Stage Three: the longest stage, two months, the corpse turns a swamp-green with boils that ooze thick yellow puss. Stage Four: this stage is by far the worst (Yeah, even worse than stage three) because this is the stage that nearly ended all of humanity, because in stage four…

… They rise…

~

My name is Relebohile Nare. I was born in Kroonstad, a town in the central regions of South Africa. I am twenty-three years old, male and I’ve been alone since five years ago, that’s when the whole world went to shit. I often wonder to myself how I managed to stay alive, but I suspect it has to be because I have always been alone since I was born. I always knew how to fend for myself, but then again, there were other orphans out there but they weren’t so lucky.

Eight months ago, a group of survivors founds its way into Kroonstad, they were forty-three, and since then I’ve been a part of them. I’m the only one my age.

We survive because we live by a strict rule; the only rule we have. We don’t go out during the day. That’s because daytime is Rep time. They eat anything that they see moving. Reps ate everything from the cows to the birds, and not forgetting what they did to us… humans. I once saw Reps eat someone while they were still alive. I still have nightmares about it.

During the night, though, they are as dead as a stone. That’s one of the reasons we call them Reps, it’s short for reptiles because like reptiles they need the warmth of the sun to become active. When night comes, though, they drop dead (I wish they would stay dead) and we can move around without getting hurt.

We never figured out why this is. At first, people thought it had something to do with Ultra-violet light but there was never any concrete proof. As the epidemic got worse, more and more theories about the virus came out, each one crazier than the last and each one more believable.

So that’s how we came to live like this; how humans became nocturnal.

During the day, we live in an underground storage bunker. I found it while I was still alone. It could host about a thousand people, with six-metre high walls that are as equally as thick. It has taps with clean water, electricity, food, sleeping bags, everything we need.

It was midnight when four others and myself were in the streets looking for survivors. Each day we transmitted and each day we got an answer, but so far, only six people have made it here. Making our group fifty strong (or yummy, whichever way you looked at it).

Each night, at nine o’clock, we would go out and search for anyone who might have made it here. Armed with loudspeakers, flashlights and rifles (just in case the Reps decided that daytime wasn’t enough for them, we skimmed the edges of the town calling out to anyone.

I was driving alone that night, checking out the road that lead out to another town, Viljoenskroon (a town where we had received a reply on our radio, two nights before). A man who said he a scientist, had answered, his voice quivering over the radio.

“Who are you?” I remember asking him.

His voice poured out of the speakers fused with static. It had a deep thankful relief in it. “My name is Jodi and I with my son, Bo, in Viljoenskroon”.
