Children’s activity puzzle books are designed to encourage children to develop their perception and their dexterity. The danger is that many children are given activity puzzle books that are either way below the child’s abilities or far exceed their abilities. When the book’s puzzles are below the child’s abilities; in other words too easy, they don’t offer sufficient challenge to create any enthusiasm and will result in boredom and a disinterest in activity puzzle books. On the other hand, if a children’s activity puzzle book has content that is far beyond the child’s ability; that is too difficult, this can lead to discouragement and a loss of self-confidence. But children need and want to be challenged. But how does one know what book is suitable for a particular child?

Firstly, most parents have a quite accurate perception of their child’s abilities and should thus try and visualise their child resolving the puzzles in the book that they wish to purchase. They also need to take careful notice of their child’s reaction to activity books that they attempt to complete. A lack of enthusiasm and boredom usually indicates that the book is too easy or too difficult and thus beyond the child’s abilities while enthusiasm indicates that the book is challenging but not beyond the child’s capabilities.

The most important goal to a child is to be able to create something attractive and the more creative a puzzle is the more enthusiasm it will generate. For example, a book that requires a child to press out some perforated shapes and place then in matching cut-out shapes is a good exercise but if the placing of the perforated shapes in the cut-outs completes a picture then the child will feel a greater sense of achievement. Other activity books that achieve this sense of achievement are colouring-in books that enable the child to display his or her creativity and receive praise and encouragement from those who have been shown the end product. Praise and recognition are vital to all human beings but especially to children.

My children’s activity puzzle books are available from:

Most of the books focus on the ability to use a pair of scissors and to recognise different lines, shapes and characteristics. Using a pair of scissors is one of the finest ways to encourage good hand-eye co-ordination, dexterity and neatness. The ability to stick pieces of paper into a grid accurately also promotes good hand-eye co-ordination. Because all my ebooks, except obviously the colouring-in books and the FIND THEM book, require the use of a pair of scissors, it’s important to note that these books all need to be used with adult supervision; something that helps create good bonding between parent and child. All the books are the same price – US$3.99 and the number of pages in each book is noted so that you can accurately ascertain the total price of each book including printing.
