A Rocky Start

It was a rocky start
I would run, laugh and play
Just living for the sun of a new day
The more I played
The more your senses swayed
Was it like looking into a mirror?
25 years your past to the day
For every mistake I made
Was it a Déjà vu to you?
Bringing back memories
Days of your youth
Never did you explain
My punishment with a belt you laid
Pain of that moment
Memories of future days
From within each year I grew
Till one day eye to eye who knew?
A new understanding without words
A day I became competition
Pound for pound we stood
Eye to eye if you would
I inherited your mirrored looks
I also inherited your bad temper that took
For decades I separated our ways
Alone for you to sit and reflect on those days
To question yourself
To answer yourself
Yet through the love of your strap
A whip for honesty
A whip for bravery
A whip for good measure in the moment
During those decades I thought
Of those dry eyes not
Eye to eye in my mirror I inspect
All of my attributes I have left
I am not a thief
I am not a liar
I am respectful to all others
Realizing more pro’s than cons
This must have been your hidden desire
Then one day we unite
Too old and wise for a fight
Now I understood your ways
It was the upbringing of your days
Though it was a rocky start
Now we work together being smart
Sharing each day before the last
Living in forgiveness of the past
