A Daughter Lost

From the very first time we met
Her little hand grasped my finger
A blank stare of curiosity reflected back at me
It was a new beginning for each of us
So helpless on her own
A future of endless possibilities
I see an echo of my image in her eyes
A promise made then to let her be herself
My heart filled with joy yet delusional
My future heart break yet not realized
All the good she gave suspended my heart break
Until time catches up
This time could wait
Years spent watching her innocence bloom
Slowly maturing into herself
Standing to witness not to interfere
Trying to keep a promise made
Days of joy she brought I’ll keep forever
Days of thunder she brought we are alike
Days of being more than I could ever be
She is on her way to be truly herself
The days pass into years becoming my memories
Too fast and too little to carry my future journeys
Repeating and reflecting those memories worn
Who would ever think our journey would be so short?
Was my promise my own failure?
Was letting her be herself my own demise?
My time is now catching itself
I was hoping time would wait till I die
Time waits for no man
My heart breaks now in present time
My heart no longer being delusional
Realization of a daughter lost
She has grown truly into herself
A promise I made has been kept
My reward is my punishment
A daughter lost
Reborn in our next life a second chance
Once again her little hand to grasp my finger
She will still echo my image with a twinkle in her eye
Again I will make the promise
To let her be herself!
