A Guide on Sciatica Treatment in Ayurveda Natural Remedies

Sciatica Causes and Sciatica Ayurvedic Treatment

Sciatica treatment is one of the biggest concerns of the doctors dealing with the locomotory disorders. Now question arises, is sciatica the name of a disease. Is it the name of a syndrome or a symptom or a complication? Really sciatica is the name of the largest nerve in the human body. It runs from the lumbar bones up to the foot. It is comprised of three segments of nerve roots arising from L3 –L4, L4-L5 and L5-S1 inter vertebral disc space (IVDS). The sciatica nerve moves through the sciatica notch of the femur. This nerve is responsible for the comfortable movement of the leg. When it gets affected physiologically or pathologically it looses normal function. People call it sciatica disease. By that time there is the need of a sciatica treatment.

Sciatica Causes

Sciatica causes are many in numbers. Sciatica diseases may take place as an independent disease or a complication or symptom of another disease. The causes of sciatica may be classified into external and internal. The external causes includes trauma and injury due to accident, surgery etc. One accident may cause injury to the lumbar spine or the sciatica nerve. One injury to the sciatica nerve may cause a sciatica disease directly. Sciatica disease as a complication may take place due to an injury to the lumbar spine. In the same process a wrong surgery may cause injury to the inter vertebral disc or sciatica nerve giving rise to sciatica disease as a complication or symptom respectively.

The internal sciatica causes include infection in the spine or the sciatica nerve, cyst or tumor in the spinal chord, calcium deficiency, bone degeneration, inter vertebral compression, inter vertebral disc protrusion, spinal canal stenosis etc.

All the above mentioned causes affect the activity of the sciatica nerve. When two vertebrae get compressed the inter vertebral disc get prolapsed. The prolapsed inter vertebral disc (PIVD) compress spinal chord, narrowing the spinal canal. That is called spinal stenosis. At the same time it compresses the bilaterall exiting nerves which comprise together to form the sciatica nerve. As a result the function of the sciatica nerve is affected. Here sciatica disease come out as the complication of PIVD.

Sciatica Treatment

Sciatica treatment varies according to the reason behind the disease. When sciatica disease takes place due to cyst or tumour in the spinal chord then a surgery is required to eliminate the reason. If sciatica takes place due to bone or disc degeneration after tubercular infection then a TB treatment must precede. Osteophyte growth and deposition on the vertebrae affects the function of the sciatica nerve. At this point there is the need of a bone surgery to remove the pressure from the spinal chord. When the alignment of the spine is derailed causing loss of lordosis or scoliosis or kyphosis, there is the need of rehabilitation.

Along with all of the above mentioned treatments and others bed rest is the most preferred treatment for sciatica. We can say bed rest is the fast line of treatment of sciatica.

In modern medicine calcium, NSID, analgesics, vitamin B12 are some of the solutions for sciatica disease, but these are not enough. A good number of alternative medicine and treatments for sciatica are practiced at different part of the world.

Sciatica Ayurvedic Treatment

Ayurveda pancha karma treatment and ayurvedic medicine are very popular in India for sciatica ayurvedic treatment. Ayurveda medicine work over the Apana Vayu. We may compare Apan Vayu with sacral nerve plexus. The Asthapan Basti, one of the prominent Pancha karma treatment strengthen the sacral nerve plexus and lumber muscle around. Toning the lumber muscle it prevents the compression of lumbar vertebrae. In this way it prevents the prolapse of inter vertebral disc.

The Ayurvedic medicine nourishes the bone, ligament, tendon, muscle and nerves. It also boosts the immunity power that helps keeping infection away. The course of treatment by Ayurveda Panchakarma includes balancing three doshas, rehabilitating vata, physeotherapy, yoga and pranayam and ayurvedic medicines.
