In today’s economic hardship, there’s a need to stand on your two feet and forget the government in a lot of ways. This might be difficult to do in our part of the world, considering the fact that most African parents only believe in “behind-the-desk” jobs. Hence anyone who wishes to think outside the box is deemed irresponsible and in some cases, disrespectful. This shouldn’t deter you from pursuing your dreams. That’s why I’ve come up with this manual on how to start a Graphic Design Career. I hope and pray this manual helps and inspires you unto greater heights.

5 WAYS TO A CAREER IN GRAPHIC DESIGN

#
p<>{color:#000;}. OWN A COMPUTER: I always wanted to do Graphic Design either as a hobby or a job, I didn’t care. I just wanted Graphic Design one way or the other. But without a personal computer (PC), this wasn’t a dream I could bet on. I had to keep dreaming for about a year before I had my PC. Having a PC is the most important part of this skill set especially if you plan on starting a career in this field. Nonetheless, if you can get access to one frequently, you are ready to go – for a hobby. But keep this in mind- about 90% of work in this field is done on the PC. Gone are the days when Graphic Design meant hand drawn posters and art. Now, everything has turned DIGITAL. If you have completed this step, you are ready to move on.

#
p<>{color:#000;}. GET THE REQUIRED SOFTWARE PACKAGES: As I said early on, I had the desire for Graphic Design even before I had a PC. So if you thought I had the software packages in hand also before I had a PC, you are right. In fact, I had both Adobe Photoshop CS3 and Corel Draw X3 suites about a year prior to my acquisition of a PC. Acquiring at least one Graphic Design software package is very essential if you really want to start Graphic Designing, as Graphic Designing without its software packages is nonexistent. Some basic but effective software packages include Adobe Photoshop (the one I stated early on, CS3, is an old version. Modern versions include the Adobe Photoshop C6 and CC), Corel Draw Suite is also an effective tool in Graphic Designing. There are other suites like Adobe Illustrator, After Effects, Edge, etc. Normally, you are required to buy these packages. Yes!! They are not free of charge. But you can ask around for a copy. Your friends might have one. But if you don’t find from your friends, you can go a Graphic Design studio and if you ask nicely, they might just give it to you. If you still don’t have a copy and you live in and around Accra, Ghana, just contact me via email or phone and we’ll work out something. Now you have settled this stage, it’s time to move to another important one.

#
p<>{color:#000;}. LEARN: When I finally got my PC, I didn’t have a teacher. So naturally, I run to the one who gave me the package for a lesson. Yes, a lesson. I had only one 4-hour lesson with him since I sneaked from home. Did I tell you my parents were not in favor of the idea? Moving on, Graphic Design is not as easy as its products look on bill boards and books. A lot of work goes into a fine design (rhyme intended).

##
p<>{color:#000;}. SPELLING: On five (5) bill boards on the streets of Accra, you are likely to see three (3) with spelling mistakes. Most of these spelling mistakes did not come by typos. The designers just did not know the correct spelling. I told an aspiring designer that “You need to know how to spell…” when he asked me what he needed to be a Graphic Designer. Trust me, it is a very important tool you need. Over 500 people are likely to read a design you make in a day. Imagine 500 people reading your mistake.

##
p<>{color:#000;}. GRAPHIC DESIGNING TUTORIALS: With the help of the internet, we can now learn online and from the comfort of our homes too. You can’t just let go of this opportunity! These sites have excellent Graphic Design tutorials.

##
p<>{color:#000;}. EXPERTS/PEERS: These group of people are great teachers, except when they are super busy. They have been in the system for some time and can share with you some tips and tricks if you ask nicely. Go to a local designing studio and ask for help. They might just give you an internship opportunity. Just try.

##
p<>{color:#000;}. YOURSELF: After that 4hr lesson from the man I spoke about, I did everything on my own. Day and night I was behind the PC – teaching myself. I did this until my first official design which is HERE . It was tedious and fun at the same time. I spent hours just on just mastering the tools for Adobe Photoshop. It is paying off right now! This is the best way to learn Graphic Design- learning from your mistakes.

#
p<>{color:#000;}. GET A COMPANY NAME/LOGO: Here, I’ll assume you have successfully started your studies on Graphic Design. Congratulations. One thing that I did immediately after I mastered the art was to get a name and a logo. This may seem too early but it is very important if you want to succeed in the next stage. The first name my company went by was DHERIC DEZIGNS. This, obviously, was coined out of my name. As time went on, since I was gaining new customers, I wanted to go more formal so I changed it to ZOE DESIGNS. The final change was made early this year since we had become a bigger company with a Graphic Design department under it. So now we go by EDEN GH (all past logos are HERE). The name and logo are the first things people are going to notice about your company. If you have a nice and professional logo, your prospective customers already know what to expect from you. Your company name should be something catchy. You can’t name your company “UGLY DESIGNS” and expect to get contracts. Your name is your identity; and it carries the mindset you want your customers to have about you. Start thinking of a name for your company and let me know via email or phone.

#
p<>{color:#000;}. REACH PROSPECTIVE CUSTOMERS: After successfully completing the above stages, it is now time to reach your clients. Remember, without clients there is no us. I remember when started out, my first clients were the WhatsApp groups I was in. of course, I did this for free. But it was worth it. I would design the group domain pictures (DP) and sign my name underneath with my contacts. I found this to be effective because it made my friends my first clients. It wasn’t long before people started contacting me for their posters and logos. On this topic, let me introduce you to “SNOWBALL SAMPLING” type of advertisement that Graphic Designers heavily rely on. It seems confusing but it is very easy. This is the situation where your client recommends you to his/her friend if they are impressed with your work. That friend too, if impressed by your work, will also recommend you to his/her friend. And the series goes on and on and on. Because of this technique, every work of yours (especially those that go public) has to be top notch. You don’t know who might be watching from afar. Another thing to do is to design your own posters and flyers and be sure to keep them at vantage points. You can choose to hand them out in person or simply paste them on notice boards or wherever you might deem fit. Also, social media has become a great way to market small businesses. And the best part is the only money you have to pay is for data bundle!! You can market yourself on Facebook, Instagram, even on Twitter. It’s all free!!!!

Now that you’ve completed these five (5) steps, you are ready to call yourself a Graphic Designer. The learning doesn’t stop here though. You’ve got a lot more to learn, since the world is moving forward daily and Graphic Designing is too. Email your questions and I will be glad to answer them. Stay creative and don’t stop learning.

Thank you for reading my book. If you enjoyed it, won’t you please take a moment to leave me a review at your favorite retailer?

Thanks!
