Unplugged!

Chapter 1

Hi! My name is Chris Templeton. I’m thirteen years old and I love computers. I’ve loved them ever since I got one last Christmas. It’s the latest model ever!

I have a little sister called Callie, and apparently, I’m her tormentor. Really though it’s her tormenting me!

As I walk home from school now, my phone buzzes. I read the text….

Mark: Hey Chris! Wanna play football?

I’ve got more important stuff to do so I reply back:

“No thanks!”

Mark: “Ok! See you tomorrow!”

I rush back to my house, open the door and walk in.

“Hey honey, how was school today?” Mam says.

“Good.”

an awkward silence ensues!

“Dinner will be ready in half an hour so go and do your homework, Dad will be home by dinner,” says Mam.

“Ok mam” I say as I run up the stairs, dump the bag, and rush to my computer.

Before mam even notices, I’m not doing homework!

I go into Playbook, where all the people in the world are, and just as I’m about to scroll…

[BANG!!] CALLIE walks into the room.

Hey Chrissie, wanna play Tweet-Tweet?”

“No thanks, let me do my homework!”

You’re MEAN!!” Callie shouts as she walks out, slamming the door crossly behind her.

Ah, back to Playbook. I scroll for a few minutes before a pop-up pops up (as they have been known to do)

You have violated our Terms of Service and our Policies.

You shall be punished by visiting us with your TRUE SELF

and must accomplish ALL challenges.

Are you in?

YES NO

Terms of service?! ………… POLICIES?! ……………..TRUE SELF????!!!!!!!

It must be a prank!

So, for the fun of it, I click YES!

Suddenly, thunder strikes and a flash of light blinds me.

Then……………………………….. darkness.

Chapter 2

I open my eyes.

I check my surroundings.

I look back and realise: “That’s my room!”

My dumped (hastily abandoned) bag has spilled.

I rush to it before …

BANG!

That was GLASS!!

…. That means ……… it can’t be …….

I’m IN MY COMPUTER!!

I sit down to give myself a few seconds to relax.

A black screen (well, a wall to me) brightens up.

A loud voice booms: “WELCOME TO LEVEL ONE!!

AND NOW THERE IS A DOOR WHERE THERE WAS NO DOOR!!!

(Sorry there, I was hyperventilating!)

Anyway, I go through the door.

There are these little … things.

They are behind a blue wall with a football in front of it.

I can hear little voices whisper…

“He’s a jerk…”

“He doesn’t like us anymore…”

“He HATES us!….”

They sound very morbid until I realise – they’re talking about ME!

I kick the football at the wall.

A brick falls.

A few scurrying sounds later, I see this –

I shout “MOVE BACK!” before I give the wall another kick.

More bricks fall.

I keep going until I notice what’s written on the ball….

Happiness with Friends

I look at the remainder of the wall where I see a message….

“An Anti-Social Life.”

I just kicked my “wall” away from my friends.

….. Is that a good thing?

….. I presume so ….

Chapter 3

The alien friends pick me up….

What if they’ve come to take me home?

… “WELCOME TO LEVEL TWO!”

… Nope! They’re not!

Instead they are bringing me to a ship, with a face!

It speaks: “Chris honey, spend more time outside….”

It sounds like my mam.

This might take me home, so I run, before - *SNAP!*

Ow! That was one hard bite by a snake. I stare at it as its says:

“But mam, playbook needs me!”

… What is going on?

I squash it with my feet as my aliens waddle behind me.

I keep squishing the snakes.

Suddenly a huge snake says one word to make all my aliens faint.

….”Isssssssolated.”

How am I going to squash this guy?

I give him a kick in the stomach!

The snake falls, I pick up the aliens and rush to the ship.

“Welcome home honey” the ship says before flying into outer space.

But my adventures have not stopped yet – strange events continue to unfold…

Then there is a very big bird in front of us.

“Play with me Chris” it tweets.

Chapter 4

She pecks our ship!

“Let Chris play with me!”

She pecks harder!”

If I don’t go out to her I’ll lose the ship and never be home.

I walk out of the ship…

“Please play with her Chris” Mom-ship says.

I rub the bird’s beak.

Little giggles come from her.

I stop for a moment.

She gets bigger and pecks the ship again.

I have no choice but to rub her now.

As I rub her, I notice that she gets smaller (.. intriguing!)

The aliens cheer, along with Mom-ship.

And as she gets smaller and smaller, she giggles and looks more and more like Callie!

By the time she is calm she has human legs and Callie’s big brown eyes.

I hold the birdie and bring her in to the ship.

The aliens cheer and feed the bird while I ask the ship a few questions…

“Where are we going?”

To the park honey.”

…what park?!

Callie-bird waddles over… “wanna play tweet tweet?”

Chapter 5

The ship opens its doors and lets me, the aliens and Callie bird out.

It looks like the park across the road.

We walk along until we see a few trees.

They look peculiar but my team want to sit down.

The Mom-ship is about a mile or so behind.

I sit under the shade before…. The shadow has suddenly gone!

I look behind me – the tree looks like it’s taken a-fence to me.

We walk to another tree before …

That tree is gone too!

They all seem to be gone until they make a gate blocking us out.

What do we do now?

“CHRIS…. I haven’t spoken to you for ages…”

Who is that?!

Chapter 6

I look up and see this ….

…. She sure looks angry!

But I don’t think she’s like the rest in here.

She isn’t a friendly person it seems, or an ally either… must be like the snakes.

I give the tree a squirrel.

It still doesn’t seem pleased.

“ARISE CHRIS! Come to me!”

I stand still.

“I SAID COME!”

“I AM STALINA AND YOU ARE NOW SO DISPLEASED TO SEE ME!”

“COME” says Stalina.

A hand of darkness arises from her hand and pushes me into the air.

I am … floating ….

Quite an eerie feeling…

“I BROUGHT YOU HERE TO BE WITH ME!”

“DO YOU PREFER DEATH OR ME?” asks Stalina.

“ME!” I answered simply, with a cheeky nonchalance which I regret.

It did not go down well!

“YOU?!”

“OF COURSE YOU MEAN ME SO IF YOU LOVE ME LETS FIGHT!”

Love her???!

I tried to save my group, but in vain as I am pulled back into the air.

“I SAID FIGHT!!!” Stalina screams!

Chapter 7

A mace appears in my hand, a kid proofed one and her mace seems to look like it will actually cause damage.

She charges towards me, I jump quickly – and land on a cloud!

It’s soft but I have no time to waste!

I hear small cheers.

I must be doing well.

I hit her shins with my kid- proofed mace.

And no damage seems to land on her.

She charges towards me again.

“YOUUUUU” I scream as she whirls her mace at me!

She looks as if she is in awe –

Then it seems … realisation…

If she loves me she will have to let me go,

And if I did…

LO … VE……. Her, I would come back to her.

“Let my friends go! My mam, my sister – I know why you brought them here”

“The trees are your minions so just tell them to get out of the way and let me go!” I said.

“GO THEN! … BUT PROMISE ME SOMETHING … “

“Anything” I reply.

“PLEASE COME AND VISIT ME” she says, as she opens up a portal to my room.

The trees let go of my group and send them into the portal, then I follow.

Chapter 8

A few minutes later I open my eyes…

STALINA WAS STILL THERE!!!

“YOU DIDN’T THINK I WAS GOING TO LET YOU GO THAT EASILY DID YOU??” she shouted!

“I …. I thought that …”

“I’D LET YOU GO???”

“I LIKE YOUBUT I DON’T TRUST YOU!” Stalina shouted as she walked away.

I understood how she felt.

If I was isolated like that, I wouldn’t trust ANYONE!

….. What if my family and friends felt like that too??!

I needed to go and explain to her that I had to leave.

“Stalina! I’m sorry! I haven’t been myself lately!”

… the trees formed a barrier around her….

“I’ve been isolating myself, just to some virtual DODOs!”

“You have to let me go! PLEEEEEEEEEASE!” I begged!

Stalina glanced over.

She didn’t want to lose him again.

Her spirit used to be friends with him at football,

But as he slowly faded away he barely noticed her existence anymore.

But maybe, if she didn’t bring him back she would never actually see him again!

Chapter 9

I waited for her answer.

The aliens crawled over.

I gave them the last of the candy in my pocket.

They seemed to enjoy it.

Stalina finally made her decision..

“COME TO FOOTBALL LATER OK?! … OR I WILL PERSONALLY DRAG YOU BACK HERE!”

“Thank you so much!!” I said

And then I did something a bit irrational….

I gave her a HUGGGGGGGG!

“NOW GO!!” Stalina said, with a smile.

She clicked her fingers and then I flew in the air and the Mam-ship and Callie Bird and the aliens waved as I flew into what I thought was a portal.

. All went black ….

Chapter 10

I opened my eyes…

I am in my actual room!!

MY REAL ROOM!!!

WHOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

But if it has been two days, wouldn’t I have missed school??

.. and dinner?

I walked around my room to check that Callie hadn’t invaded my room…

And my room looked the same.

I ran down the stairs and bellowed:

“MAAAAAAA!!!! “

“IS DINNER READY???!”

“Jeez Chris! It’ll be ready in five minutes!”

“Go and finish your homework!”

How is this happening???!

… But I don’t have time to ponder on it, as I do my homework…..

Within a few minutes I am finished…

And I turn off the computer …… For Good!

A text appeared on my phone…

Sally Maria.

Hey! You playing football? You haven’t shown for a while… I missed you.”

Awwww, I best go after dinner.

I text back: “Ok after dinner, you on my team?”

Gosh!

She’s a fast typer!

Sally Maria!

Yep! See you later! ”

“Chrissy!! Mam says food’s ready!” Callie says (not frightening me for once!)

“Ok Callie, let’s go” I said as I walked down the stairs … towards my real flesh and blood family, plugging myself back into reality ….. For Good.

The End!

The moral of the story is to live a good life and don’t isolate yourself to technology.

Know when to shut down the computer, or the phone!
