Part 1: How Life Works

The Power of Desire

_You are what your deepest desire is. _

As is your desire, so is your intention.

As is your intention, so is your will.

As is your will, so is your deed.

_As is your deed, so is your destiny. _

Upanishads

If you are reading this book it is because there is at least one part of your life that you want to improve. The desire to have a better quality of life is healthy and normal. This “Power of Inner Change for Outer Results” eBook series contains the tools and techniques that I have used for myself and with my clients for the last seventeen years as a Clinical Hypnotherapist and Master Energy Healer. Used together, they provide the means to engineer major life improvements. They are simple. They are effective. They are easy to use. They don’t fix everything – nothing does – but they can really accelerate the rate of positive and lasting change. I want to share them with you so that you can radically improve your life.

Between Two Minds

Consciousness creates matter. This means that our beliefs and regular thoughts give rise to the way our lives are. This is great news, because when we finally realise this, it means that we then have the power to change what we want to change. It takes us out of victim mode into creator mode.

The conscious mind and the subconscious mind are interdependent. The conscious mind is the creative mind and holds our desires, including the laudable desire for a radically improved life. As the seat of our personal identity, the conscious mind likes to think it is in charge. In actual fact, the subconscious mind governs 95% of our lives. It drives our decisions, actions, reactions, feelings and behaviour. It produces our involuntary thoughts. It is like a powerful five year old child, without the ability to reason. It has no ability to filter information and therefore accepts everything it is told repeatedly as fact. It has no sense of humour and interprets self-denigrating comments as the truth. It runs habitual programs that were mostly put in place before the age of seven years. Those programs were absorbed from parents, teachers and culture. Many of these programs are negative, which is why our lives so often go awry. While we may consciously desire better things, subconscious habitual programs are running in the background, subverting our desire for improvement. The subconscious mind is a million times more powerful than the conscious mind. It makes either a powerful friend or foe.

The good news is that if we make a conscious decision to change things for the better, and properly reprogram our subconscious minds, then our lives must and do reflect that new perception of reality. That is Universal Law.

What is Personal Power?

Personal power is the ability and willingness to take full responsibility for everything in our lives and our reaction to everyone with whom we choose to interact. Taking responsibility may sound onerous, but in fact, it returns power to us. We then have the Ability to Respond to life.

We lose our personal power in a number of unconscious ways. It is easy to look at an aspect of our lives and blame someone else for it. Blaming anyone for anything causes us to feel powerless. We also lose power when we accept a victim stance. “He made me feel this way.” “She said this and then I felt humiliated.” The truth is that no-one can make us feel anything we don’t want to feel. We can choose to feel differently and therefore alter the unhealthy dynamic. Powerlessness is reactive, while powerfulness is responsive. The feelings we feel are created by the thoughts we think. Power is generated by the thoughts we think. When we voluntarily choose new, positive and more effective thoughts, we regain our own power which can then be used to make the radical life improvements we desire.

Burdens of the Past

You can’t go forward when looking backwards.

Marese Hickey

The hurts of the past can weigh us down. In order to create a radically improved life, we must let go of as many of them as possible. Otherwise, it is like trying to go on a great journey carrying a heavy boulder on our backs. We won’t get far. We all carry our secrets and burdens. Often what shames us are the things we said or did, or the things we didn’t say or do that we wish we had. Then there are things that were said to us and done to us by others. Shame is crippling. It paralyses us. We feel shame when we judge ourselves for our actions or inactions, or our thoughts or intentions. Judgement is labelling that “this is good and that is bad.” It is a habit of the ego. In order to let go of the past, we seek to move past the ego and into our higher, better selves. One way to start doing this is to consciously decide to forgive ourselves now for the things we feel guilty about. Forgiveness is a practice. It is not something we do just once. Our hearts don’t work like that. We have to practise forgiveness over and over until our hearts become lighter. When our hearts become lighter, then we need to move on to forgiving others. Let me tell you a story:

When I was five years old, I went to a new school. My female teacher hated me with a vengeance. Knowing what I know now, I believe that she may have been in some way abused as a child. She may even have been a sociopath. Whatever her history, she was a very unhappy person with a lot of unresolved rage. She beat me physically every school day for the next two years and repeatedly told me I was stupid. I could do no right. I was terrified of her. The last day of class in the second year I had her was traditionally sports day with no classes. She even found an excuse to beat and humiliate me that day. Years later, I went to an iridologist. Iridology is the study of the iris, the idea being that irregularities appear on the iris that can give advance notice of illness, sometimes years ahead of time. The iridologist said that when I was young, my spirit had been broken. He was right. That early school experience led me to have low self-esteem, be full of fear, anger, powerlessness and self-contempt.

However, in retrospect, I can see a purpose in the suffering. As Nietzsche said, “He who has a why to live can bear almost any how.” It took many years of my life to heal myself, but what I learned from that healing journey has been Soul Food. One of my first tasks was to acknowledge this traumatic time. After that, I began the journey to understanding how it had affected me. This led me to my lifelong study of how we operate, especially emotionally, and how the human heart and spirit can heal.

Understanding the process of forgiveness and letting go has been crucial to my healing. Until we forgive, we hold on to our tormentors. We carry them on our backs, while they have moved on, probably to another victim. In forgiveness is freedom. The freedom of forgiveness allows us to look back and create a more useful, new story about our wounded past.

A life pattern for me is that when I learn something useful, I always want to share it so that others might move ahead with their lives faster than I did, towards more joyful living. My initial story was one of victimhood. Now my story is one of learning from hard times and turning those experiences into words that might help others. For me, this makes the trauma worthwhile. This alchemical reframing of the dross of hurt into the gold of wisdom allows integration of the lost parts of ourselves and brings us closer to wholeness. One of my spiritual teachers told me that once we can look back and say “So what?” we have healed the trauma. Thankfully I have been at the “So what?” stage for a long time about that trauma and for me, life is good. I would like you to learn from what I learned so that you too can let go of the past and move forwards into joyfully living the radically improved life you desire and deserve.

How do Childhood Wounds Affect us?

Physically – they can make us fearful. We shrink back. Trauma and shock are held in our physical bodies and stay there until we find a way to safely let them go.

Emotionally – common emotional reactions are fear, anxiety, depression, self-loathing, self-contempt, low self-esteem, fear of trusting others or of taking a risk to change, even if it will be a change for the better.

Mentally – We develop negative beliefs such as “The world is a frightening place.” Our beliefs serve as a framework for our life experience, so a negative belief creates a negative experience. We become unwilling to risk new things due to fear. Our self-talk becomes very negative, which in turn reduces our life energy and feeds into the negative cycle of being stuck in a dark place.

Spiritually – we can mistakenly believe that we are alone and isolated in the universe. We can lose faith that we are connected to a benign force greater than ourselves.

Behaviourally – trauma can manifest as “acting out” in children, and in adults can result in avoidant, self-destructive or other-destructive behaviour or phobias, which are an unsuccessful unconscious attempt to heal the past. An example would be a person who has grown up in a family damaged by alcohol abuse who then marries an alcoholic. Our subconscious minds direct us down this route in an attempt to “get it right” this time round. Sadly, it doesn’t work. Instead, we need to do the inner work of healing in order to allow our outer lives manifest the positive changes we want.

Heart Energy – we can become unwilling to open our hearts for fear of being hurt. We can become guarded. We can lose hope that things will ever improve.

Aura or Energy Field – An aura or energy field is an electromagnetic field that surrounds every living thing. We absorb Universal Energy through our solar plexus chakra or energy centre. This Universal Energy is not an optional extra – it is our life force. Without it, we are dead. The aura carries the scars of our traumas within it, as energy clots, until they are released. Those energy clots contribute to our stuckness and inability to move on. Briefly, in energy terms, the traumas are actually stored in our energy field first and if they are not safely released, they make their way into the physical body and produce symptoms. The purpose of these symptoms is to get us to pay attention to a part of us that needs healing.

It is useful to note that the pain of childhood wounds is completely subjective and what can seem traumatic to a younger mind might seem ludicrous to an adult mind – but it doesn’t matter. If the younger mind feels that an event was painful, then that event is what we must acknowledge, respect and work with to safely release. Healing is necessary for everything connected to the trauma – the emotions, the beliefs and tension where it is stored in the body.

[+It is important to note that if you have experienced serious trauma, then it is vital that you work with a trained therapist of your choosing in order to safely process it and move on towards healing. +]Once you have done substantial initial work, you might then choose to use some or all of the tools suggested in this book.

Healing from past trauma therefore requires work on all aspects of the self as listed above. Every part of us is interconnected so any work we do on one part will help all of us. But there are some things I have learned that can really expedite the healing process and I am delighted to be able to share them with you.

For my own personal healing journey I have used clinical hypnotherapy, energy healing, bioenergy healing, constellation group therapy, body work and so many different therapies that I can’t even remember them all! They have all helped in some way. Letting go of the past is a PROCESS. So let’s look at some ways forward.

Step 1 in Letting Go of the Past

The first step in letting go of the past is to make the conscious decision to let go of anything that is holding you back and move on from there. Decide to do whatever is necessary in order to allow healing to take place. This includes acknowledging that some experiences in the past were hurtful or caused suffering. When strong emotional reactions occur and receive an adequate response from a parent figure, the emotional energy is safely processed and released from the psyche and body. In the absence of such an appropriate response from the parent figure, emotional pain can become traumatic. It is worth noting that for an adult who received insufficiently responsive parenting, part of the healing process is to learn how to self-comfort and self-parent the inner child that continues to live within us all our lives. The conscious decision to let go of the past is a serious commitment and I suggest that you write it down, date it and sign it. The subconscious mind will then understand that you are serious about making this positive change, and start working with you to orchestrate it.

Step 2 in Letting Go of the Past

In the next chapter, you can learn and use a safe, simple but powerful and effective energy healing technique that starts the process of clearing the past physically, emotionally and mentally right now. There is a link in the next chapter to an instructional video of how to use TAT to clear old beliefs and therefore let go of the past.

Part 2: Healing Foundational Beliefs

About Beliefs

[_There is only one cause of unhappiness: _]

_the false beliefs you have in your head, _

_beliefs so widespread, so commonly held, _

_that it never occurs to you to question them. _

Anthony De Mello

When our lives are not working as we want them to, a foundational problem lies with our underlying unconscious beliefs. An idea that we have been told regularly becomes a belief. It is not necessarily true. At one time, it was commonly believed that the earth was flat. That was a false belief, but everyone behaved as if it were true. Beliefs, positive or negative, are the framework for experience. Most beliefs develop before we reach the age of seven. These beliefs come from our parents, teachers and the culture in which we were raised. When the beliefs are positive, our lives reflect that perception of reality. Sometimes however, the beliefs are negative and keep us mired in fear, scarcity, or loneliness. The subconscious mind accepts what it is regularly told, and then creates reality to match the belief. That is, if we perceive ourselves as victims, it is the function of the subconscious mind to manifest that victimhood in our reality. If we perceive ourselves as powerful, it is the function of the subconscious mind to manifest [_that _]perception in our reality. The good news is that our beliefs can be changed. We can clear out old beliefs that do not work for us, and install new ones that do.

Introducing Tapas Acupressure Therapy (TAT)

In order to create lasting positive change, we need to do a spring-clean of our outmoded beliefs. To find out what negative beliefs are operating in your life, look at the areas in which life is not working for you. For instance, if you are struggling to make ends meet, you may have a belief that “money doesn’t grow on trees.”

Exercise: Make a list of problem areas in your life. Beside the problem area, list a likely belief that you have. All beliefs have an attached emotion. Here is an example:

Problem: Constant lack of money

Sample Belief: I’ll always be poor.

Sample Underlying Emotion: Fear or lack of trust in self or universe.

Let’s say you identify three negative beliefs you want to release in order to improve your life. To start letting them go, choose one – not the toughest one – and carry out the following exercise. The reason for choosing a less challenging belief to begin is to increase your chance of success, and therefore to build confidence which will encourage you to keep going.

The exercise uses Tapas Acupressure Therapy (TAT) which is a form of energy healing created by Tapas Fleming (see www.tatlife.com). In her seminal work, [_Molecules of Emotion, _]the neuroscientist Candace Pert states “Your body IS your subconscious mind and you can’t heal it by talk alone.” (Pert, Candace, Molecules of Emotion, Simon & Schuster; 1999) This is where energy healing comes in and that is why it is so effective at helping us to change. The underlying concept of energy healing is that there are meridians or channels in our bodies through which our life energy flows. When life energy flows freely, we experience physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well-being. That energy can be slowed or stopped due to fear, trauma, stress or negative beliefs. When this happens, an energy clot forms. Energy healing such as TAT (or other modalities such as Emotional Freedom Therapy) clears the energy blockage. Using energy healing such as TAT dramatically accelerates the rate of healing. I have successfully used it on myself and with many clients in my clinical hypnotherapy and energy healing practice over the last seventeen years, and have taught others how to use it. The beauty of energy healing is that it can be used to clear old beliefs, the painful emotions attached to them, and release the tension in the part of the body where the belief/trauma is stored – all at the same time! It is safe, effective and easy to learn and to use. That is not to say it is a cure-all because there is no such thing, but can it help? Yes, it can. In this case we are going to use it for clearing old, negative beliefs and the emotion attached, plus the bodily stress wherever it is located.

In order to perform TAT correctly, you will need to place your hands on your head in a particular position, and this hand placement is demonstrated, along with the exercise, on my YouTube channel “Healing with Heart.” I suggest you read the next section first, and then watch the video. The link is in the Video section.

Before you begin, it is useful to find out where in your body the underlying emotion is stored, and how strong it is. To assess its strength, we can use a simple scale created by Dr Joseph Wolpe in 1969, called the Subjective Units of Distress Scale, or SUDS scale. Here’s how to do this:

(a) Let’s say you feel stuck in some area of your life. Close your eyes and get allow yourself to become quiet inside. Focus your attention on the problem, in this case the stuckness you want to release. Use one word to label your feeling about the problem. It is likely to be frustration or fear. In this example the feeling is fear.

(b) Do an internal scan of your body, to find out where in your body the fear is located, by looking for tension or tightness in the stomach, chest, throat, back of neck, shoulders and head. If you are not sure where it is, just guess.

© When you find it, a number pops into your head to let you know how strong it is, on a scale of 0-10, where 0 is calm and relaxed, and 10 is an intense level of fear.

(d) If the number is 7/10 for example, then the object of the exercise is to use TAT to reduce that number to 0/10 and allow the release of the stuck emotional energy. That energy can then be directed toward the radical life improvements you desire and deserve.

Before TAT

Problem: Constant lack of money

Sample Belief: I’ll always be poor.

Sample Underlying Emotion: Fear or lack of trust in self or universe.

Location in body: Stomach (for example)

SUDS Scale (Intensity of Distress): Level 6/10

After TAT

New Belief: I am becoming more prosperous every day now.

Underlying Emotion: Calmness

Location in body: Everywhere

SUDS Scale (Intensity of Distress): 0/10 Blocked life energy has been released.

How to use TAT to Effectively Change Old Beliefs

Only use TAT for a maximum of 20 minutes per day. TAT is an emotional detox, so little and often is best. No need to jettison your entire life baggage in one day! Make sure to drink at least 6 glasses of water on each day you practice TAT to help flush out your system. Note that it is perfectly fine to read each line before you say it. When you get used to using TAT, you will find that this is no longer necessary and you will be able to do a round of TAT within a few minutes. I suggest that you read the description first and then click on the blue hyperlink at the bottom of the section to watch the demonstration video.

Imagine you want to clear a belief in scarcity, such as “I never have enough money.” Close your eyes and notice what feeling you have as you repeat that phrase to yourself. Choose one word to label that feeling. Let’s say it is fear. The next thing is to find out how strong it is. On a scale of 0 to 10, where 0 is calm and relaxed and 10 is an intense level of fear, a number just pops into your mind now to let you know how strong that level of fear is. So let’s say it’s at a level 6.

If you had to guess where in your body that feeling is located, would it be in the stomach, chest, throat, shoulders, back of the neck, shoulders or head? Let’s say it is at level 6, it’s fear, and it’s in the stomach. The purpose of TAT is to clear that from level 6 right down to zero, which then frees up a huge amount of life energy for you to improve your life.

Step 1: Set Your Intention. Put your hands in position as shown in the video.[+ +]Repeat (silently or out loud) “I deserve to live and I deserve love, health, happiness, and prosperity.”

Step 2: Repeat to yourself: “All of the origins of this are healing now.”

Step 3: Repeat to yourself: “All of the places in my mind, body and life where this has been stored are healing now.” If you believe in reincarnation, you can say “lives,” which sounds like “All of the places in my mind, body and lives where this has been held are healing now.”

Step 4: Repeat to yourself: “All parts of me that got anything out of holding on to this are healing now.”

Step 5: Repeat to yourself: “I forgive anyone I ever blamed for this including God and myself.”

[+Step 6: +]Repeat to yourself: “Whatever is left of this is healing now.”

Now at this point, close your eyes and check in with the stomach. The fear was at a level 6, and a number just pops into your mind now to let you know where it’s at. If it’s down to zero, proceed to Steps 7 and 8.

Step 7: When it’s down to zero, the next step is to choose a new belief that you want to install into your mind, which is the opposite of the old belief to create a new framework for a new experience. It might sound like:

“I now choose to become more prosperous every day.”

Step 8: “This healing is now integrated at all levels of my being. “

When you check in with the stomach, if the fear level is NOT down to zero,

you can repeat Steps 6-8 by which I mean:

Repeating Steps 6 to 8.

Step 6: “Whatever is left of this is healing now.”

Step 7: When it’s down to zero, the next step is to choose a new belief that you want to install into your mind, which is the opposite of the old belief to create a new framework for a new experience. It might sound like:

“I now choose to become more prosperous every day.”

Step 8: “This healing is now integrated at all levels of my being.”

Remember to drink 6 – 8 glasses of water in the 24 hours following a TAT session.

Other Ways to use TAT

Now that you know how to perform TAT, you can use it for clearing patterns of self-sabotage or internal obstacles in the very same way. Here is an example:

Before TAT

Problem: Self-sabotage by not doing what I need to do.

Sample Belief: Success is scary. I might be overwhelmed.

Sample Underlying Emotion: Fear of being powerful.

Location in body: Stomach (for example)

SUDS Scale (Intensity of Distress): Level 6/10

After TAT

New Belief: I am becoming more successful and powerful every day now.

Underlying Emotion: Calmness

Location in body: Everywhere

SUDS Scale (Intensity of Distress): 0/10 – Blocked life energy has been released.

In my work as a clinical hypnotherapist and energy healer, people often come to me feeling stressed, fearful or stuck. I explain the use of TAT to them and with their permission, I use it as outlined to help them release the strong negative feelings that have been weighing them down. We usually then move on to using hypnosis to make even more progress. At the end of the TAT, I ask them how they feel inside now. The most common feedback is, “I feel lighter inside,” with a look of wonder on their faces. If they wish, I then teach them how to use the technique themselves which empowers them to continually let go and feel lighter inside whenever it is required.

Part 3: Healing Childhood Wounds

Approaching Personal Mastery

[_Calling back to us the parts of ourselves that we’ve lost _]

_may be the greatest expression of our personal mastery. _

Gregg Braden, The Divine Matrix

Energy healing is equally effective for fear, trauma or stress. Important note: if you have experienced severe trauma, it is imperative that you work with a trained therapist to safely release the trauma. This technique is not intended to take the place of working with such a therapist. I suggest that you read the next section first, then click on the blue hyperlink in the Video section to view the instructional video.

TAT to Heal Childhood Wounds

Imagine that there is a minor emotional trauma or childhood emotional wound you want to release. So just close your eyes please and focus in on that trauma. Choose one word to label the feeling that comes up when you focus in on that trauma. Let’s say that the feeling that comes up is shame. So the next thing is to find out is how strong it is. On a scale of 0 to 10, where 0 is calm and relaxed and 10 is an intense level, a number just pops into your mind now to let you know how strong that level of shame is. So let’s say that number is 8. The next is to find out where in your body that feeling is located. Closing your eyes once again, scan inside, looking for tension or tightness in the stomach, chest, throat, shoulders, back of the neck, shoulders or head. If you had to guess where it was, where would it be? Imagine it is in the chest. So what we have so far is that it is shame, and it is at level 8 and it’s in the chest. The purpose of TAT is to release that stuck energy, which then frees up a huge amount of energy so that you can move on with your life in a way that is meaningful for you.

Step 1: Set Your Intention. Put your hands in position as shown in the video[+. +]Repeat (silently or out loud) “I deserve to live and I deserve love, health, happiness, and prosperity.”

Step 2: Repeat to yourself: “This trauma happened, it’s over, I survived and I’m okay.”

Step 3: Repeat to yourself: “All of the origins of this trauma are healing now.”

Step 4: Repeat to yourself: “All of the places in my mind, body and life where this has been stored are healing now.”

Step 5: Repeat to yourself: “All parts of me that got anything out of holding on to this are healing now.”

Step 6: Repeat to yourself: “I forgive anyone I ever blamed for this including God and myself. I ask forgiveness for anyone I ever hurt because of it.”

Step 7: Repeat to yourself: “Whatever is left of this is healing now.”

Step 8: Repeat to yourself: “I now choose… (whatever positive option you desire.)” Choose a [_new belief or affirmation _]that creates the framework for the life you want. It might sound like: “I now choose to be free.”

Step 9: Repeat to yourself: “This healing is integrated now at all levels of my being.”

As before, check the level of bodily tension now. It may have gone to 0, or It may linger at a lower number than before, 2 or 3 for example. If this is the case, simply repeat Steps 7 to 9 until it is down to 0. Remember to drink 6 – 8 glasses of water in the 24 hours following a TAT session.
