After a nuclear war the human civilization is almost destroyed. Many of the survivors become sick of an unknown disease which either kills them or turns them into monsters. However, for many the apocalypse turned out more of a boring experience than for the rest. That is the case for Lloyd Scott and Eric Mason, two boys from Oregon who find themselves on a very long road trip to find their missing family members. They've been traveling for no more than a year before they meet survivor Carol Juttus - a lonely girl running away from her past who has been nothing but lucky so far to have met no infected and other troubles the boys have gone through. After begging them to take her to the closest community they can, Lloyd concedes to help. Back on the road they meet a strange man named Mick Calligan who poses as a supplier - a post-apocalyptic dealer - who tells them of a farm not far away. There the three meet the Carney family who take them in and give them food in exchange for help on the farm. There the boys learn about the existence of a radio tower in the near town. They finally see the opportunity to contact their respectful families and quickly set out to the tower. There they find themselves in more trouble than they thought there would be - nearly eaten by a whole herd of infected coming from the danger zones and the lonely tower operator who quickly takes them in but has secrets of his own. After a serious fight the boys almost break up. Lloyd wants to stay in the tower but the dangerous infected are quickly spreading and they have no other choice but to leave their new friend to die alone. After those hard choices they go back to the Carneys and help them defend their farm against the incoming waves of the sick. Unfortunately there's nothing that can help them in the situation and the infected manage to get in, destroying the hard work of the family. In the morning the boys help them clean up and decide to head out the next day when, despite Lloyd's previous rude behaviour, he offers Carol to come with them. She quickly agrees and the three find themselves on the road together.
