[] Book 1: The Great Storm

A long time ago, in a beautiful forest lived many different dinosaurs. The forest was filled with tall trees that had the widest green leaves! There were blue rivers of water that flowed across the land. The dinosaurs were happy. They lived together peacefully even though they were much different than one another. Some dinosaurs were tall and some were short. Some had spikes and some did not, but they loved each other anyway and never paid attention to their differences.

There were many young dinosaurs in the forest that were best friends and beginning to go to school. The young dinosaurs didn’t learn the alphabet and how to count, of course. They learned how to be good and strong dinosaurs just like their parents. Every day they would meet in an open field and their teacher would show them how to reach for the tallest leaves to eat, hunt for food, build houses to keep them safe, and most importantly, how to be brave.

All of the dinosaurs were learning so fast. Except for one, a small brachiosaurus named Deena. She was shorter than all the others and had a very long neck. Even though her neck was long, she still wasn’t tall enough to reach the leaves on the trees like the others. She wasn’t strong enough to carry sticks and stones to practice building a house to keep her safe and warm. She felt like she’d never fit in.

Deena had many friends, but her favorite was Max. Max was a stegosaurus. He was brave, smart, strong, and kind. He would always grab extra leaves off of the trees for Deena when she couldn’t reach. He protected her and made her feel safe.

There was also Lucy and Polly the triceratops, and Rex who was a tyrannosaurus. Rex and his mother were the only two tyrannosauruses who lived in the forest with the other dinosaurs. They were lost from their family in a flood that took over the land many years ago. Many of the other dinosaurs were afraid when Rex and his mother came to their forest. The tyrannosaurus was the most powerful and dangerous dinosaur of all. Some thought they couldn’t trust them, and they feared the rest of the tyrannosauruses coming back one day.

After school Deena, Max, Lucy, Polly, and Rex headed back through the forest towards their homes. They talked and laughed as they splashed through puddles and raced one another around the trees. With a great crashing sound, the clouds went dark gray and a bright purple flash of lightning appeared through out the sky. Rain began to pour heavily from the clouds and the wind blew strongly. The young dinosaurs were frightened. Max decided he knew the way back home and told the others to stay close together and follow him. Max went left at the large rock, right at the first small evergreen tree, and headed towards the river. They would have to cross through the water to reach the other side where their parents would be waiting for them. The rain was pouring down so hard that the river had grown larger and more difficult to cross. Max found a large tree branch and told the other dinosaurs to hold onto it with their mouths so they could all cross together. Feeling frightened, Deena, Max, Lucy, Polly, and Rex grabbed hold of the branch as tight as they could and took their first steps into the cold water.

They stepped carefully through the water although it seemed to be getting deeper and deeper! Suddenly, the water had gotten too deep and the current was too strong for Deena to hold on any longer. She let go of the branch and began floating away down the river. The others gasped. They didn’t know what to do! Max decided he would save her. He told the others to keep holding on to the branch so they could finally make it safely back to land. As he sent them on their way he, too, let go of the branch and was swept down the river towards Deena.

The river kept going, leading them farther away from home. Deena was getting tired. She couldn’t swim much longer! Finally she saw a tree that had fallen beside the river and was able to grab hold of one of its branches. She climbed on the branch as Max came rushing behind her. He grabbed on to the tree and gently pushed Deena up onto the land. They were safe. Or so they thought.

They laid on the ground for a moment, catching their breath. Deena thanked Max for saving her and she told him how sorry she was for letting go of the branch. She felt awful. They stood up and began trying to come up with a plan to get them back home. Max had an idea. If they followed the river in the opposite direction, it would have to lead them right back home! So they set off. The rain had stopped and the forest floor was filled with muddy puddles.

They heard a loud shriek and felt a pounding noise on the ground. The trees rumbled and bent. Something was coming. They looked up and realized they were now standing in the shadow of a humungous tyrannosaurus rex. It stood so tall on its two legs and let out a loud roar. Max and Deena ran as fast as they could trying to escape. As they ran they could hear the large t-rex trailing behind them. It was yelling for them to stop! Max tripped on a stone in front of him and fell to the forest floor. He tried to get up but his leg was hurt. Deena reached down and tried with all of her might to help him stand. The t-rex had now caught up and again, they stood in its tall shadow. “What are you doing in my valley?” the tyrannosaurus roared. “We were just trying to get home when it started storming, and we got lost. I fell into the river and it led us here. If you just let us go we’ll leave your valley, please!” Deena said in her tiny voice. The tyrannosaurus’s eyes lit up when he realized they had come from up the river. “Can you take me to where your home is?” the t-rex said gently. “I’m looking for my son and his mother. I’ve been trying to find them since they were lost many years ago”. Deena and Max instantly realized that the gigantic tyrannosaurus must be Rex’s father and they were determined to bring them back together. With that, Deena and Max climbed up onto the tyrannosaurus’s back and they headed up the river, excited for the adventure that awaited them.
