The James Barkley gang were well known outlaws in the town of Gold Dust during 1876. James Barkley thought if anyone found any gold in the town of Gold Dust they wouldn’t mind sharing, but he was dead wrong because no one in the town liked the James Barkley gang.

One night when James Barkley and his gang were camping out planning their next stage coach robbery, James said, “There is a stage coach coming this way in the morning around high noon and there is around one-hundred thousand dollars in cash and this will make us rich.” Black Jack chimed in and said, “James, this will make us famous outlaws.”

James had a short fuse and if he got into an argument with someone his six shooters did the talking, and that wasn’t a good thing because he was known as the fastest gun in the west. He wore a special calfskin vest with built in holsters containing two Colt .41 caliber revolvers.

As the men were sleeping, one of James’ men by the name of Saddle Jack Thompson was snoring, and James was getting upset because he needed to get a good night’s rest in order to be focused on the stage coach robbery in the morning. So he woke up Saddle Jack and told him to stop snoring, but a few minutes later the snoring continued, so James pulled out one of his Colt .41’s and shot him in the head and the snoring stopped.

Black Jack said, “James, why did you do that?”

James replied, “I couldn’t sleep because of his snoring, and I told him to stop and he didn’t. So I shot him. Now if you don’t mind, let’s get some sleep. We have a stage coach coming through in five hours and we need to be ready.”

“Okay,” said Black Jack.

The two men got their sleep and morning arrived. James and Black Jack had rattle snake breakfast. Finally noon arrived and the men could hear the stage coach heading their way.

James and Black Jack were on their horses behind some bushes when the stage coach passed by their bush. They raced towards the stage coach, and as they got alongside the driver they each pulled out their Colt .41 revolvers and shot the driver dead. A gun battle rang out between the James Barkley gang and two lawmen that were sent along to protect the money, but James Barkley was too good of a shot for the lawmen to take James and Black Jack down. Within just a few minutes, the two lawmen were dead.

James opened the stage coach and was so happy to get his hands on the money, but his ego and greed got the best of him and when Black Jack came up to get his share, James said, “There’s been a change of plans.”

“Who do you mean, there’s been a change of plans?” asked Black Jack in a concerned voice.

“This is the end of the line for you, Black Jack!”

“Now wait just a minute, I thought we were friends and friends look out for each other.”

“I’ve heard enough!” said James, and he unloaded his revolvers on Black Jack, killing him instantly.

James loaded up his saddles with the hundred thousand dollars and rode back into town to get some whiskey and play some poker. James was a lousy poker player and a sore loser. Mixing alcohol and being a sore loser only means one thing for James, and that’s someone is going to die when he plays poker and it’s not going to be James Barkley.

James swung open the doors of the Gold Dust Saloon and said, “Who wants to play some poker?”

People scattered throughout the saloon because they knew he wasn’t there for a good time. James sat down at a table in the corner with three men who were already drunk and playing poker. James was dealt his and it was a losing hand. James took a swig of whiskey and when everyone at the table laid their cards down, James knew he lost. When one of the men was about to take all the winnings, James pulled out both revolvers and shot all three men dead.

He took the money and carried it out to his horse and stuffed the money in his satchel. As he rode off, the sheriff and his deputies were shooting at him, but James Barkley was able to escape for now.

Since James Barkley killed all of his gang, his days were pretty much numbered. James being a greedy man and afraid of anyone decided to come back to his birth place and rob the bank and play another round of poker before he left the town of Gold Dust for good.

Robbing the bank was easy, but when he entered the Gold Dust Saloon his luck was about to run out. As he was sitting with a couple men at a table playing poker, Black Jack and Saddle Jack Thompson’s ghosts entered the saloon and said, “James Barkley, turn around!”

James Barkley turned around and wasn’t much of a tough outlaw now, seeing the ghosts of his gang members standing right in front of him.

“What do you want from me?” asked James.

They said, “We’re not a gang without the leader of the gang.”

“You’re both dead and there ain’t no way we can be a gang again, because you both are dead!” said James in an angry voice.

Saddle Jack said, “Draw, James!”

Before James could pull his guns out of his holsters, Saddle Jack and Black Jack filled his body full of holes and James Barkley was dead. Then all the people in the saloon looked on in amazement as the once feared outlaw in their town was dead.

Saddle Jack Thompson and Black Jack said, “Rise up, James Barkley. There is a stage coach on the way and we need to saddle up and get going.”

James Barkley’s bullet-ridden body rose up from the table and said in a ghostly voice, “It’s good to have the gang back together, so let’s get on our horses and stop that stage coach before it gets away and we lose out on all that cash.”

The James Barkley gang got on their horses and rode away, never to be seen again in the physical sense, but their ghosts can be seen riding alongside any stage coaches that ride by the town of Gold Dust to keep the James Barkley gang legend alive.
