Jinna couldn’t understand how just one week before her wedding, she was ordered by her monstrous boss, Demetrio Zarakis, to call it off. He gave her another option—go to jail for robbing his personal safe. Jinna thought there must be a misunderstanding because her merciless boss would never fake a robbery to stop her from marrying somebody else . . . or would he?
Driven by a desperate need for money, Jinna found herself trapped in a two-year contract as a PA to Demetrio Zarakis, the ruthless Greek tycoon. After she accompanied him to Greece, it was no easy task keeping her body, soul, and personal life out of her dominant boss’s reach. Her instinct told her from the beginning that this man was a predator and that if she let him into her life in any way, he could devour her. After two years of keeping a strict distance between them, carefully rejecting his advances, and watching him change his colors from gentle courtship to menacing rage, a big bundle of fear settled in her heart, and this was before the contract period ended. Jinna was relieved that the contract was about to end, and she had numerous plans for a cheerful life outside of her intimidating boss’s presence. But this was all crushed when she learned the hard way how far Demetrio Zarakis would go to get what he wanted.
“There’s no doubt you’re already in my power, Jinna, and you belong either by my side or under my feet.”
But would it be possible for Jinna to get away from him even when her own heart didn’t seem to be on her side anymore?
P.S: This was the first part of the Forced series, please I would like to read your view .
Warning: this story is not intended to be a soft romance, so, it can contain some violence and scenes that may be considered disturbing to some readers.
Jinna’s thoughts drifted as the driver crossed street after street. She was excited about going back to the States after completing her contract with Mr. Demetrio Zarakis, the powerful Greek tycoon. She was not sure why she felt intimidated by the littlest word he said and the littlest action he took. To be honest she hadn’t liked this man since the first time she saw him .She didn’t like that he suddenly became interested in his company’s small branch in her town or that he came too many times there where she used to work. Sometimes she felt like he was watching and evaluating her every move. She wouldn’t have accepted the tempting contract if she didn’t need money so desperately. Her younger sister, Ami, had a rare disease, and the treatment coasted a lot of money. It consumed most of the family income.
The way MR. Zarakis talked, the way he walked and almost the slightest gesture he made used to give her the creeps. Even when he was acting nice she got a sense that he was just pretending. She couldn’t help feeling that way, even though she believed she wasn’t important to him and that he wouldn’t bother pretending not to be the dark controlling freak she believed he really was.
Lately, he had been trying to convince her to continue as his PA for another year. He even offered to triple her salary which was already more than tempting.
Even though Jinna sometimes admired her boss’s strong will and personality, she didn’t feel safe with him, particularly after he tried to make advances toward her, the way he yelled when she refused scared her, and she was not sure if his violent reaction was because he was drunk or because he didn’t want to accept” No” as an answer to the slightest of his whims. Even after he apologized for what he did that day she was too scared to turn off his marriage proposal directly, she was afraid of experiencing another fit of his rage. In fact she eluded him until she went to her country in a short visit, then she came back with John’s ring on her finger and even then she sometimes felt as if he developed a bad temper just because of her refusal. He would reproach her for the slightest mistake and make her do the same document four times for no real reason and he became really impatient and more reluctant to give her time to visit her family in the States. She couldn’t understand why he would be interested on a girl like her anyway, she was not particularly beautiful, the only remarkably beautiful feature in her was her hair, which she inherited from her Indian father, and which was mostly made into a simple ponytail, the rest of her features was close to her English mother, her brown eyes, and small well shaped figure. She mostly came to work with comfortable decent clothes that could never be called tempting; In fact she sometimes thought that maybe Mr. Zarakis was interested on her only because she represented a challenge to him. Mr. Zarakis had been very nice to her lately almost like he first met her, and he had been tempting her into renewing the contract.
Yesterday they were supposed to meet someone for a business dinner in one of the most expensive hotels in Athens. Normally, it was her who made reservations for a business dinner, but this one was made by her boss himself. There was no one except them in the hotel’s large luxury restaurant. It looked like her boss had booked all the tables, but doing that would have been too excessive of him. And the elegant mind-blowing view was too romantic for a business dinner. When the business partner didn’t show up, Mr. Zarakis demanded her to stay and have dinner with him, she wouldn’t do that .Even though she was his PA and even though she had travelled with him many times, she had always been careful to keep a distance. For moments she thought a dark disappointed or malcontent expression crossed Mr. Zarakis’s face. But why he would be angry with her, he must have been angry with the unfortunate looser who dared to break his appointment with her ruthless boss particularly after he went through the trouble of making such preparations for the meeting .He shouldn’t feel disappointed at her. After all, the reservation was not made for her, right?
One of the old colleagues told her once that her boss used to have affairs, but he was never faithful to any woman, he would have more than one mistress at the same time, and his affairs never lasted more than a month and sometimes a part of this month is spent ending the affair.
The way newspapers and magazines talked about her boss’s affairs showed that he was not to be trusted with a woman who took things seriously, and even promiscuous women could get hurt by his ways. However, Jinna rarely saw her boss starting an affair since she’d come, she only saw him ending them with women who had their hopes broken by him. Anyway, there was only three days remaining for the contract period to be over and after one more week she would be Mrs. john Abhra, a title she had craved for so long.
In her way to her office, Jinna felt like officers were gazing at her awkwardly, for some moments she thought something could have been wrong with her appearance. Then she told herself she was just imagining it, she was looking the same way she had been since she first started working here. Then she met Sara, a colleague from the next office, and the most popular and talkative person in the whole company.
“Have you heard of what happened Jinna?”
“The safe of MR. Zarakis’s office was robbed, two police officers were here”
That was kind of hard to believe. With all these security officers and all these security precautions, it was almost impossible for a fly to leave or enter the large building without being noticed. And Mr. Zarakis’s personal safe was more protected than Muslim’s Kaaba. Before she could give any comment Sara was gone to continue working and reporting news.
As soon as Jinna entered her office adjoining her boss’s, he called her from his office. She didn’t like the tone of his voice.
She walked into his office and saw him seated on his chair, his hands clasped comfortably.
“Yes, Mr. Zarakis.” She still used his last name, even though he had told her to address him by his first.
“What have you done to the money?” He asked without leaving his seat.
She started to feel uncomfortable, “What money? I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
He half stood up and brought his upper body closer to the desk, placing his hands on it and then ordered with a familiar dominant tone.
“Stop playing games! You won’t like the consequences. The money that was here in my safe – only you and I knew the opening code, and only you could enter my office in my absence.”
Fear and apprehension formed something hot starting to boil in the pit of her stomach.
“ There must be some misunderstanding, I took nothing from here, you know I would never do that. I have only three days left of work here; you know I would never do that.”
“Listen, Jinna, we can do this the easy way or the hard way. You’re going to speak the truth. There were two hundred thousand dollars here – where’s the money? I can call the police and I assure you, you won’t like our jail. I can even cause more trouble after you’re jailed. In fact, I have already made sure it was you – only your prints are there on the safe. I have friends in the police, as you know, and they think you’re the only suspect. In fact, I’m going to call them right now and we’ll see if you stick to your story.”
As Demetrio mentioned the word “jail” she paled and felt breathing becoming harder, that frightening word “jail” stirred the memories of the worst traumatic experience she’d went through. She had spent one day in jail before. It was due to a kind of misunderstanding and the police let her go after a short time. During the night she spent there she had some argument with an officer who tried to force himself on her. Her slight figure didn’t help her much .She was badly assaulted and humiliated but , thankfully, she wasn’t raped .Yet, the mere mention of that word made her stomach hurt. She pleaded, remembering how her prints got there. “For God’s sake sir, you asked me to get some papers from the safe to your other office the day before yesterday”.
His eyes hardened, she had always believed those dark eyes were cruel by nature, her words couldn’t change his mind one bit.
She couldn’t help starting to cry , God he was serious about jailing her.
“Please Mr. Zarakis, there’re only seven days left before my wedding, I can’t stay here for long, and I can’t go to jail. You remember you made me get the papers.”
There was menace and cold determination in his soft voice as he turned his face abrasively from her tearful eyes , gesturing the futility of anything she would say to defend herself.
“I remember nothing, it’s either you or me, there’s no other possibility. What is it? You thought I wouldn’t find out until you were already gone? If you keep denying it I promise you would be in jail in less than two hours. I trusted you for long and I hate nothing more than betrayal.”
She knew he was going to carry out his threat. Jinna’s instinct had always told her this man’s charm was veiling natural cruelty, she hated his intimidating dominant personality before, now he was both dominant and angry and the mix made him look like an angry devil. No matter how handsome he was, the look on his face made her shudder with fear.
“Please MR. Zarakis”. She hated herself for how she said it, she hated her weakness, and she knew something must be wrong, but clearly he was convinced it was her, and he was determined to hurt her and she could sense that he was so capable of doing it one way or another.
He faced her severely. “Look this is not getting us anywhere. You haven’t even confessed or apologized yet,” He held the phone set and continued, “I’ m calling the police”.
“Nooo.” She cried as she pleadingly reached out to hold his hand to stop him from using it. She knew she couldn’t get herself a lawyer. She was almost completely alone in this country and knew more than anything that he was taking it personally and would do anything it takes to hurt her. He was too powerful and ruthless for her to fight; he could crush her in a heartbeat. Even the most powerful men of politics and economy couldn’t stand to his face. He could be really merciless if you give him a reason.
The impatient look on his face made her sob brokenly.
“Sorry, I’m so sorry “.
Of course she didn’t mean it the way she said it, the only thing she was really sorry for was her weakness. She was holding his hand with shaky hands, with her face now a mix of misery and terror.
He seemed to calm a little by her apology but not completely.
[* He explained impatiently, "say it in Greek, you've been here for twenty- four months and your Greek is still pathetic. Say the word right for God's sake." *]
Jinna felt more humiliated, God she was completely under his mercy and she knew he had none.
“Say it right.”
Was he enjoying this?!
She wiped a tear from her face as she said it.
“Ok now tell me where the money is.”
She forgot her feeling of humiliation, now her fear had the total control. She said almost shaking with fear.
“I don’t know.”
She was too scared to make him angrier, at the moment she would say or do anything to appease his anger; she was shaking, her eyes not leaving the phone which was still in his hand. She broke. “Please MR. Zarakis, I can’t get it back, I will do anything you want but I swear I can’t get it back.”
“How? Did you gamble or something? What have you done?”
That was a poor excuse, she didn’t think he could believe it but she still had to say something.
“Yes, please, I can’t get it back. I will do anything you want but please, I can’t get it back.” She could see her denial was provoking him more than anything, and she was going to say anything to avoid his wrath.
He calmed a bit but still she didn’t feel safe from his anger.
“Ok, then you will have to sign some papers to make sure you’re going to pay somehow. You’re going to work for me another year.”
She was too depressed and confused to find his words surprising. If he wanted a woman whom he believed to be a thief to work for him then be it, she said quickly like a drowning person who had just found a straw.
“Ok ,I will only have a month for my wedding and ….”
“And there will be no wedding.” He interrupted quickly.
He explained in a controlled quiet voice, “You’ve made a mistake, I will let you work to get my money back but still, there have to be some punishment for what you did, the least you could do is calling the fooled fiancé of yours and cancel the wedding.”
He continued as he saw the refusing look in her eyes, drawing her attention to the phone set in his hand, “I’m trying to help you here, of course if you prefer jail I won’t mind. That would be even better and he’s going to find out what kind of person you are and would leave you anyway.”
Now Jinna felt like being in a nightmare, he was killing the dream she craved for so long. She felt like he was asking her to stop breathing, he wanted her to leave the one person she loved for so long, she knew John since she was a child, his love grew with her, and both their families blessed that love and encouraged it. She had her heart broken when john left her to marry another woman, but even then she couldn’t bring herself to stop loving him. Then when he came back to her she couldn’t stop herself from forgiving him and eagerly taking him back .Now the man standing before her is ruthlessly forcing her to cancel the wedding.
Jinna tried to plead some more. “Please, i…can’t …I lo……”
She wanted to tell him that she loved her fiancé, that she loved him since she was a child, that this was like an execution not a generous light punishment like he was saying but the burning rage in his eyes stopped her dead, the dark expression on his face inspired that her words were going to anger him more than the theft itself, However ,she couldn’t help objecting in anguish, “What would he feel? What would he think? He’s going to hate me..”
He gloated with implicated grudge, “Yes, wouldn’t he? It hurts when you crave desperately for something, then when you think you’re so close to get it, you find it taken from you forever huh?”
Was he talking about her fiancé or her? She didn’t think John was going to hurt as much as her; it was her who loved him as much as Demetrio indicated.
He shrugged his shoulders pointing, “Anyway, it’s your choice.”
He drew the headphone to his face in order to call the police. she felt fear almost drugging her senses as she defeatedly took the handset from his hands, her own hands shaking, her face blushed and her face all wet with tears. Somehow in the past, even though there was no justification, she had sensed this moment would come. The moment when she would be on her knees before this man. The moment he gets a chance to make her beg and plead. She felt so small and he looked like a giant who was going to crush all her hopes under his feet .God she was so close to getting what she had always wanted and now she lost her love again.
She raised the phone handset to her face and she tried to bring herself to do what he wanted. With a controlled voice he took the phone from her hand and ordered her to stop crying.
He gave her a glass of wine. “Drink this before you call him. You don’t want to sound pathetic, have some dignity.”
She was not used to drinking but she was going do anything he said at that moment .She dialed john’s number wishing he wouldn’t answer but he did anyway. For a moment she opened her mouth and closed it like a fish with no words coming out. Finally the words came out, “I’m sorry John, I’m not going to marry you please call the wedding off.”
She felt a buzz in her ears, she didn’t know what john was saying and she didn’t get the time for it anyway as Demetrio’s hands took the handset from her. Now she let her tears stream. Without much resistance from her side Demetrio took the engagement ring from her finger, she felt like her heart had just been ripped out from her chest, she lost all control and cried brokenly, her tears and sobs seemed to have a will of their own. For moments she didn’t even recognize the hands that held her, cradled her as Demetrio held her to his chest and whispered
“Hssssss, it’s ok stop crying, love, now it’s over ..don’t cry ,you will get over it. You got over it before and you will do it again. “
She couldn’t understand the meaning of his last sentence, how did he know these things about her. She was so lost in her grief that she almost unconsciously let her tormentor hold her more tightly almost with real care and sympathy, and something else she couldn’t identify, something like possessiveness or longing, holding her the way you would hold something as dear as life if you lost it for a long time and then found it again.
She cried for a long time, her tears wetting his shirt, and when she started to get back to her senses she freed herself from his hold. She felt her head was exploding with headache.
“You’re not going to work today, I’m taking you home.” He said with the usual commanding tone in his voice. If she didn’t know him too well she would have imagined there was tenderness in his voice. Anyway, she didn’t argue, he was right, she was too drained and exhausted to work. She stood ,she didn’t bother tidying her clothes and she walked to the door and he followed her. she wanted to tell him not to bother taking her home himself ,but she was too broken and weak to object to anything he did at that moment .she had always thought of him as a predictor, now that he saw her weakness ,he was going be more arrogant and persistent and controlling.
As she settled in the seat beside him, Demetrio opened a shelf in the perfectly designed car, took some can of juice and gave it to her commanding: “Drink this; you cried a lot, your mouth must be dry.” She pushed it back to him but he insisted softly:
“We have to be friends if you’re going to work for me another year ok? And you’re in my hands now so why bother defying me? “
Then he warned:
“And you’re not going to treat me with proud reservation now, you got it ?”.She got it, now he got the control and he would certainly use it. This misunderstanding gave him a chance to release his sickest desires .She still hoped he would be too busy to give her personal attention.
