The Dress

by Ted Stetson

Amy Duffy was tired of being pushed around and taken advantage of and went shopping for a new dress. The sales clerk said the Security Dress would stop that. The moment her body showed signs of distress the Dress would protect her. The sexy flapper dress would protect her inside a cocoon of porcupine-like spikes. The dress itself would harden so no one could grab or hit her. The belt around her waist had sensors that could tell if she was attacked and would call the police.

She liked the dress so much she bought a red one with red tassels. She wanted to buy two, but the sales girl told her there had been a run on the dress and she had only this one left.

That night she went out with friends wearing the hot red dress. Her friends liked it, but Amy kept the best part secret; she would wait until some guy became fresh and show them. They went to a club they’d never gone to before and pranced around like royalty. She’d never felt so liberated and so in control.

They were dancing to the loud music when some guys joined in. Wouldn’t you know it, Brad, the handsome one, was dancing with her friend, Monica, and she got Carlos, the one with the large nose. What the hell, she didn’t care, she had the Dress. The future was hers. Still, it was a surprise when Brad started spending time with her. Her friends told her to go with the flow.

She kept jumping on the dance floor waiting for a chance to show off the Dress to her friends, but whenever a creep approached Brad was there to chase him away. At least it wasn’t a total bust.

Later, everyone went their separate ways and gorgeous Brad walked her home. They reached her place and before she could tell him her secret, they were kissing hot and heavy. She wanted him and he wanted her.

She had never wanted someone as much as she wanted him now. She ripped off his shirt and he started to unzip her. Just then an alarm blared on the dress.

Oh no! God! No!

“What’s that noise?” he asked.

She tried to push him away, but her hands slipped on his sweaty chest. She was so scared she didn’t know what to do. He reached out and gently took hold of her face to kiss her lips. A heartbeat later the defenses took action. The tassels on the dress, now spikes, stabbed Brad over a dozen times. None of the wounds were fatal, but as he struggled to free himself of the spikes she slipped and fell and pulled him down on top of her. He cried out as he tried to get off her, but it was too late. Then she started screaming.

The trial of the Dress Too Hot to Wear topped the headlines.

“The dress is not at fault,” the prosecution said. “She is!”

“We’ve never had a refund on this model Dress,” the pouty boutique manager said as if it was Amy’s fault for being so unstylish.

The manufacturer’s representative said, “She never properly initiated the defense protocols.”

“What protocols?” she said and got a warning from the judge.

“In tens of thousands of sales none of the other Security Dresses malfunctioned after proper protocol initiation,” the manufacturer’s Vice-President in charge of Public Relations said after a lengthy discussion with the company’s lawyer. “She must have initiated the defense protocol when this young man, this Brad, kissed her.”

Amy jumped to her feet and screamed, “What the hell are you talking about?” Her lawyer barely managed to restrain her.

She stood nervous and pale as the jury delivered its verdict.

The judge sentenced her to twenty years.

She said it was the Dress’s fault, but no one listened. After her appeals failed she went to prison. By that time her Dress model was obsolete and the new electro-shock dress was all the rage. However, she was able to sell her original model to a collector for enough to pay the lawyers.
