Andrew Kohuch had spent many, many hours talking and writing to me about his first twenty-five years of life in the Ukraine. I have tried to take the stories he has told, and give them shape here, to create some sort of historical foundation about his roots. Andrew told me of his family history beginning with his grandparents. He continued his stories through his birth and childhood, up to the point where he left for Canada. Since these are his “memories”, they must be seen as the telling of history from memory. Andrew did his best to tell everything that would help his children and the generations that followed, know about the life he had lived in the “old country”. I wrote this story, for it is in the form of a story more than a historical document. To just focus on the historical facts ignores the man behind the facts of time, event, and place.
