Kyle James, the lead character, has no hearing in his left ear due to a childhood illness. He is determined to restore lost hearing and provide himself with an internal smart phone in the process. He and a partner work out the critical technology, a method of connecting a computer to the human nervous system. Coincidentally, his favorite university professor, Dr. Monroe, uses software that Kyle developed to create a sentient computer program. An enemy from the past, Dr. Waters, tries to murder Dr. Monroe by hijacking Kyle's technology. In the attempt, the professor's wife, Annette, is shot in the head. Due to provisions of Annette's living will, Dr. Monroe comes up with a plan to extend her life. Using the method of connecting a computer to the nervous system and the sentient program that was modeled after Annette, Kyle and Dr. Monroe implant a computer hosting the sentient program into Annette's comatose body. The implant works beyond their wildest dreams and convincingly mimics Annette Monroe. When the brain of Annette Monroe fails to regain consciousness, the sentient program cleverly outwits its creators but not in a malicious way. Eventually, Dr. Waters succeeds in murdering Dr. Monroe, along with Kyle's wife. Eventually, Kyle finds love again with the computerized Annette Monroe. Together, they continue to change the world with their inventions and adventures.
