Ruby believes she is a worthless child because her mother gave her away at birth. She is adopted by a loving family, but because she looks so different from her family, she feels as if everyone recognises that she is illegitimate. It is a burden she carries always, too proud to ask any questions. She rejects her birth father when he tries to enter her life, and has nothing but loathing for her birth mother. When she accidentally learns the truth following the birth of her granddaughter, her loathing turns on herself for being so judgemental without bothering to learn the facts. That is when her journey begins: to find her mother and beg forgiveness.
