Seven Keys to Unlock

Your Calling

Passion for Your house has consumed me. (Psalm 69:9)

1. You will feel it

What is it you care about deeply, more than anything else? What is it that breaks your heart? Drives you to your knees often to pray? Makes you zealous? Burdened? If you are called to it, you will feel it ‒ and go on feeling it. It won’t go away with the passing of time.

2. You will be single-minded and passionate about it

What are you passionate and eager about? When you get passionate about something, you come up against enemies, giants and obstacles! Paul pressed through much adversity. He was determined to fulfil his calling. If you don’t allow adversity to affect your focus, then it can’t stop your destiny.

Maybe the passion has long gone, and so has the single-mindedness. Have there been so many things you’ve been helping in or with, that everything has become vague and you’ve lost your cutting edge? Lost direction? Can’t seem to focus?

It’s not the circumstances that are happening around you, but what is happening inside you that affects your future and your destiny.

3. It will motivate you

Your calling will motivate you, like nothing else can. Without motivation nothing will get done! Paul was highly motivated. No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us (Philippians 3:13-14).

Paul was focusing all his energies on one thing: forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead. There can be no going forward unless we forget the past. Paul permitted no one and nothing to sidetrack him. He was strong in battle and strong in faith. His calling motivated him. You need to focus and forget and look forward to the future.

4. It will set you on fire to use your gifts

Your calling will burn inside you. Have you allowed the obstacles and the heat of the battle to dampen or even put out your fire? Or maybe you have allowed yourself to be involved with so many things that you are burnt out.

The battle is meant to rekindle the fire and make it hotter and burn brighter!

In Genesis 50:20, Joseph says to his brothers, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people.”

And also read this about Joseph: Joseph named his second son Ephraim, for he said “God has made me fruitful in this land of my grief” (Genesis 41:52).

And Paul tells Timothy: This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you when I laid my hands on you (2 Timothy 1:6).

Your gifts and talents are a great signpost as to what your calling is. You were born to display the “Glory of God” that is within you. First you have to believe in what God has placed in you. Do you always feel that someone else will do it better than you? So do you stay with what makes you comfortable? But God doesn’t call you for comfort or for something you can’t fulfil! Christ in you is more than enough!

Don’t allow the giants to stop you. Follow your gift ‒ stir it up ‒ use it. Press into it. As you discipline yourself to pray into it wait on it, it will develop and it will increase in effectiveness. God created you to use your talents and gifts. He won’t take them away from you.

His calling will be with you until you leave this earth, but it’s your job to find it and fulfil it. For God’s gifts and His call can never be withdrawn (Romans 11:29).

For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago (Ephesians 2:10).

5. It will make you fruitful

Your greatest effectiveness is in fulfilling your calling and to reach your full potential in God. On the way to finding out and embracing what God put you on this earth to do, there will be obstacles and distractions even “Good Things” that keep you from the best. Watch those especially, as they can seem to be right but take up a lot of time and can be very draining and not bring fruit at all. Listen for God’s voice and direction. Get someone to pray with you. Keep working at it even if it seems difficult. Don’t give up, clarity will come. For some it will come quicker than for others, but you will look back at the process and see God’s hand in it every step of the way. Doing those things that God ordained for you to do is like putting your hand into a glove that fits you perfectly.

6. It will give you great joy and fulfilment

You were made by God to do those things that He has called you to do. That’s why when you do them there is such great joy and fulfilment. It’s what you were made for! Nothing else will fulfil you like being who God made you to be and doing what He has called you to do.

Be careful of distractions that may come along. It may feel like the right way to go or seem like a good idea, but be sure to seek God with all of your heart and listen for His voice. Spend time reading His Word and He will speak. God will confirm your calling within His Word. Pray with someone you trust and be prepared to hear God say, “No, not that. This is what I have planned for you.” God knows the desires of your heart. He wants to see you fulfilling your calling, and doing it with an abundance of joy!

7. It will give you a vision, a dream and a goal

When God gives you a vision, don’t compare it with the vision He gives others. Your vision is right for you. There is no need for comparison in the Kingdom of God. You have something special to give that no one else can. You are one of a kind!

God knew exactly what He was doing when He created you. It’s good to ask yourself, “What am I doing with what God has given me?”

Vision begins with a burden deep inside ‒ then it becomes a passion and a dream.

There will be times when things look really, really bleak. But don’t get discouraged. Discouragement is one of the greatest weapons that will come against you. Don’t allow it to stop you. Keep focused and hold onto your dream.

The right vision for you will be bigger than your capabilities, but well within God’s capabilities!

The gap between having a dream and seeing it fulfilled doesn’t have to be frustration. God has promised joy in each step you take toward it, and teaches us to “wait well”!

He has given you all you will need to see your God-given purpose fulfilled ‒ in His perfect timing. This is Paul’s prayer for God’s people at Ephesus:

I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope He has given to those He called ‒ His holy people who are His rich and glorious inheritance. ^ ^I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe Him (Ephesians 1:18-19).

But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus ‒ the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God (Acts 20:24).

Here is a prayer you can use if you really want to find your calling and fulfil it:

Lord Jesus, help me to know my calling. Help me to take those steps I need to take to come into line with Your plan and purpose for me. Show me and underline those things by Your Holy Spirit that I need to be aware of. Maybe I need to let go of some things and pick up others. Bring clarity and clear direction as I pray and press into You. Make me determined to find and fulfil the purpose You have called me too. Help me not to give up, but to believe with all my heart that You will show me clearly. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Be Still

Bible Words of Peace and Comfort

There may come a time in our lives when we want to concentrate on God’s many promises of peace and comfort. The Bible readings in this book are for people who need to know what it means to be held securely in the Lord’s loving arms.

Rather than selecting single verses here and there, each reading in this book is a run of several verses. This gives a much better picture of the whole passage in which a favourite verse may be found.

As well as being for personal use, these readings are intended for sharing with anyone in special need, to help them draw comfort from the reading and prayer for that date. Bible reading and prayer are the two most important ways of getting to know and trust Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour.

The reference to the verses for the day are given, for you to look up and read in your preferred Bible translation.

The Gospels and Acts

In Simple Paraphrase

with Helpful Explanations

together with

Running Through the Bible

Chris Wright

White Tree Publishing presents a paraphrase in today's English of passages from the four Gospels -- Matthew, Mark, Luke and John -- relating Jesus' birth, life, death and resurrection in one continuous narrative with helpful explanations, plus a paraphrase of events from the book of Acts. Also in this book is a brief summary of the Epistles and Revelation. For readers unfamiliar with the New Testament, this book makes a valuable introduction, and it will surely help those familiar with the New Testament to gain some extra knowledge and understanding as they read it. Please note that this is not a translation of the Bible. It is a careful and sensitive paraphrase of parts of the New Testament, and is not intended to be quoted as Scripture. Part 2 is a short introduction to the whole Bible -- Running Through the Bible -- which is available from White Tree Publishing as a separate eBook and paperback.

Translators and others involved in foreign mission work, please note: If you believe that this copyright book, or part of this book, would be useful if translated into another language, please contact White Tree Publishing ([email protected]). Permission will be free, and assistance in formatting and publishing your new translation as an eBook and/or a paperback may be available, also without charge.

[_ Superb! I have never read anything like it. It is colloquially worded in a succinct, clear style with a brilliant (and very helpful) running commentary interspersed. I have found it a compelling read -- and indeed spiritually engaging and moving. _] Canon Derek Osborne, Norfolk, England.
