An unpretentious little novel set in England and Scotland. This is a parallel universe tale which mixes future, past and present. Fantasy novels seem to work best when travelers wear wool cloaks, and proceed on foot, or perhaps on horseback, sleeping under the stars though blasted by cold winds, all the while remaining cozy under their blankets. Cars and airplanes and the bustle of modern life don't fit well into Fantasy novels. But inns with roaring fires in the hearth, and tankards of ale, and comely wenches, and dangerous characters lurking about do work well in the Fantasy genre. Queen of Shadows keeps to that tradition. We have a group of people who venture north from England into Scotland on a mission from the Queen. They are spies who seek what the Queen seeks. One of these spies is a man of means, and he finds himself bound up in the romantic snares of some lovely ladies who need both love and money. Well who doesn't need that?
