While the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida renewed calls for stricter gun control measures across the country, we must also acknowledge the systemic failures which led up to the horrific event as well as other school attacks which fall outside of the narratives, such as Murrysville, PA, Virginia Tech. and most recently Great Mills, MD. As we heed the calls of Parkland survivors David Hogg and Emma Gonzalez, are some of our impulsive reactions actually putting students back into harm's way by failing to address the issues which drive our youth down dark paths? Whether or not one believes in strengthening our gun regulations, we must address issues outside of gun control if we want to make a positive impact. Otherwise we run the risk of confusing legislation with school safety.
