[]Introduction

In the news today, all you ever hear about is how our environment is in ruins, how our bodies are riddled with diseases and illnesses, and so many other worldwide problems like hunger, drought and animal abuse. With all of this going on, no one has come up with a solution that could save us all. Veganism is the solution. If the entire world went vegan, so many of these issues would be aided or even eliminated. World hunger, drought, diseases like obesity, diabetes, and heart disease would all be a thing of the past!  Not even mentioning how many animal’s lives would be spared. We have no other option.

[] For The Animals

For many people, they went vegan for the animals. In today’s society, most people claim to have compassion towards animals and care about them. However, very few people actually know what goes on in this cruel industry. Over 150 billion animals are slaughtered each year in order to meet the world’s demand for animal products (1). By going vegan, one person could save around 100 animals live’s each year.

When most people think of farms, they think of big red barns, open pastures, and happy, healthy animals. However, this is far from reality. Animals in the meat industry live in small cages or large, crowded warehouses. In the most recent NARMS retail meat report , it was stated that anywhere from 90-95% of all meat you buy at grocery stores may contain feces or other bacteria (2). This is due to the animals living in constant filth, crowed with hundreds, or sometimes even thousands of other animals. Chickens have nearly half of their beaks cut off in order to prevent fighting and piglets have their testicals removed without any anistetic (3). This is all standard practice. These methods are cruel and extremely stressful for the animal. Less than 5% of animals raised for food, live on actual farms with sunshine and trees (4). According to the HSUS Report: “The Welfare of Cows in the Dairy Industry”, more than 90% of dairy cows were housed indoors, many with their necks tethered to the wall not allowing them to move. In addition to these awful conditions, animals are pumped with hormones and steroids in order for them to grow faster and prevent illnesses in such dirty living conditons. According to the documentary “Food Inc.” chickens given hormones and steroids often become too big for their bodies to handle. This leads to organ faliure and a painful death. Imagine not even being able to walk because you were too large for your body to handle? Animals in the food industry have no quality of life.

Now you may be asking yourself, whats so wrong with the egg and dairy industry, they don’t kill them to get milk and eggs right? Contrary to popular belief, all of the animals end up in the same slaughter house. Female cows in the dairy industry are constantly reproducing. They are artificially inceminated over and over again. Although female cows can produce a years worth of milk after having one calf, they are only considered useful for around 4.8 years before their production slows (5) . Therefore, they must be constantly breeding in order to meet the demand (6). Once the baby is born, they will stay with the mother for anywhere from 2-48 hours before being taken so that we can get all of their milk. The female born calves receive the same fate as their mothers, and male born calves are either sold for veil, or raised for beef. This is nearly the same in the egg industry. Hens live in small cages. Most products labeled “cage-free” mean that the animals are kept in large, dark warehouses rather than cages which isn’t any better. Due to injections of hormones or feed for chickens contaning hormones, hens produce far more eggs than they would naturally. Since hens are constanly dying, they are also constantly reproducing. Female chicks lay eggs for as long as they can and are then slaughtered once their production slows. Male chicks are either sold to be raised for poultry or thrown into a meat grinder to be used as a “blend” in chicken nuggets and other cheap meats. Chickens raised on factory farms live for a maximum of 6 miserable months (7). Animals are suffering for your food. Is your desire for animal products worth more than their right to live?

[] For Your Health

In today’s world, people are destroyed by diseases like cancer, obesity, heart disease, high cholesterol, and countless others. However, a vegan diet would either eliminate or reduce your chance of developing these diseases. Animal products are loaded with cholesterol, fats, and oils from the animal source. The cholesterol will eventually lead to clogged arteries and heart disease and the fats and oils in animal products will lead to obesity and diabetes. This is not healthy. Recently the World Health Organization found that processed meats such as bacon and hotdogs increase your change of getting cancer by 18% (8). They also predict that red meat may increase your likelyhood of developing cancer as well. A cow’s milk will make a calf grow over half its size in just a few months. Imagine what this is doing to people! Not only is milk fatty, full of puss and mucus, but it is also terrible for your bones. Yup, you read right. Dairy products are bad for your bones! Did you know that the top 3 countries with the highest rates of osteoporosis are the US, the UK, and Sweden? These countries are also the countries that consume the most dairy. In fact, the Physicians Comitee For Responsible Medicine found that not only do we hardly absorb calcium from milk, but milk also has been linked with a depletian of calcium your from bones and increased risk of fractures (9). According to the WebMD article, “Is Milk Your Friend Or Foe”, women who drank 3 glasses of milk or more a day had nearly doubled their risk of death and cardiovascular disease and increased their risk of getting cancer by around 44%. Men drinking the same amount of milk experienced a 10% increased risk of death. In addition, most of the milk and dairy products you buy at the store are loaded with hormones and steroids that the cow producing the milk had been given.

Many people may bring up the argument that people were designed to eat meat and can’t live without it. However, humans were NOT made to consume and digest meat. According to the article “Shattering the Meat Myth: Humans are Natural Vegetarians”, people’s intestines are far too long to digest meat (10). For example, a lion’s average intestine size is only 8 feet long allowing fast digestion, while humans intestines range from 26-28 feet long (11). This is a huge difference. Humans also don’t have the speed and power required to hunt without on their own. You would’nt hunt an animal with no weapons and then eat it raw would you? Well a natural preditor would. As for the canines, we wouldn’t even be able to eat an apple without these teeth. Look at a gorilla. They have huge canines and only use them for eating plants and a small amount of bugs. Compared to other herbivores, our teeth are very similar.

People have the ability to thrive and become healthier on a vegan diet. Vegans and vegetarians have been proven to live on average 8 years longer than omnivores (12). Also, plants fill up your stomach quicker than animal products and give you all of the nutrients you need including protein. Protein rich vegan foods may include, leafy greens, beans, nuts, seeds, lentils, rice, quinoa, and so many other foods. Not only will your body start to repair itself with a vegan lifestyle, but you will also sleep better at night knowing that you are no longer supporting the slaughter of billions of animals each year. For more information on the health side of veganism, I would recommend that you watch the documentary “Forks Over Knives” which can be found on Netflix. There are over 80,000 edible plants that we know of and you can’t give up eating a few animal products?

[] For The Environment

Last but most definitely not least, one MAJOR reason for veganism is for the environment and for the well-being of everyone on the Earth. If the entire world went vegan, you would see changes immediately. Rainforests would start to grow back, methane and CO2 emmisions would drop dramatically, and people wouldn’t go hungry. It would be world changing.

Animal agriculture plays a huge role in pollution. In fact, cows produce over 150 billion pounds of methane per day. Methane gas emissions have been proven to be 21 times better at trapping heat in our atmosphere than carbon dioxide which is affecting climate change greatly (13). However, it’s much more than that. “Animal agriculture water consumption ranges from 34-76 trillion gallons annually” (14). This is one huge reason drought is such an issue. The animals being raised for food drink hundreds of thousands of gallons of water each day, and feed for the animals also must be grown . In addtion, only about 20% of all crops grown, are eaten by people. The rest goes towards feeding animals that will later be slaughtered. If this food wasn’t given to the animals, we would have the ability to feed all of the world’s hungry people (15).

Our climate is changing rapidly and animal agriculture has a lot to do with it. According to the article “Livestock and Climate Change” in the World Watch Magazine, livestock and their waste are responsible for more than 32,000 million tons of carbon dioxide emmisions per year (16). You would do more to help the environment by going vegan, far more than you would by switching to an electric car. Overall, “animal agriculture is the leading cause of species extinction, ocean dead zones, water pollution, and habit destruction” (17). Something must change.

Dairy:

Behind every glass of milk, piece of cheese and every dairy product is a stolen baby and grieving mother. Calves are stolen from their mothers within 48 hours of being born, to deny them the milk so it can be sold to humans. The female calves are taken away and fed on a milk replacer, and will become a dairy cow herself. The male calves are considered the trash of the dairy industry because they will never produce milk so they are sold, sometimes at auction with their umbilical cords still attached; they are sold to become veal. They will spend the remainder of their short, miserable lives confined in veal crates, sometimes chained at the neck, always immobilized. Veal crates are intentionally designed to be small to deny calves exercise and normal muscle growth, so that their meat will be tender. These calves are often handled roughly, beaten and live in fear. Never experiencing love or compassion from the moment they are ripped from their mother’s side. When they are finally sent to slaughter they are roughly handled. There is undercover video footage of calves being beaten and electro prodded to get them to walk to their slaughter. Calves are often stunned in large groups which means by the time they are hung upside down to have their throats cut they are fully conscious and aware. Meanwhile the calves mothers are being forcibly impregnated again, and nine months later will have to relive the heartbreak again. The circle of abuse never ending for her until she is no longer fit to produce milk and will be sent to slaughter herself to become hamburger meat for fast food restaurants. This is life for a dairy cow and her calves. The dairy industry is the meat industry and it is the veal industry.

“On the 30th November 2011 I saw an Expose’ on Australian TV about our horrendous Live Export Industry. Millions of sheep and cows are exported on ships on dreadful journeys to Asia and the Middle East. For the ones that survive the trip they are then brutally slaughtered fully conscious. The murders are done this way as these people want their meat killed “halal” for their religion. I watched the current affairs program for the full hour completely stunned and crying most of the time. Up until that point I had never really thought about where my meat came from. I just grew up eating it like most people and we are brainwashed not to think about it. We are also brainwashed to think we actually need meat for health which is a blatant lie. I decided at the end of that program I would never eat meat again.

Over the next week I continued to educate myself on the absolute cruelty and brutality of the Dairy Industry and the Egg Industry. So after being vegetarian for not even a week I was vegan. I tried to learn as much as I could about veganism and recipes and animal liberation. I learnt we as humans are actually herbivores and plants are full of protein and iron and all the nutrition we need to be healthy. I gave away anything I owned made of leather. My life was changed forever and for the better. I fight for Animal Liberation everyday and I will never stop.

“Growing up I was eating crappy foods like cheese pizzas, hamburgers, cottage cheese, fried chicken, steaks etc. I never really thought about what exactly happens to the animals when they are heading to slaughter, and I was totally clueless about how the animals were being treated. As a result I became overweight and sick because of my poor diet choices. It wasn’t until a couple years ago a friend of mine showed me a short video called Farm to Fridge. The moment I saw the suffering with my own eyes I knew that something needs to be changed. After watching the video I could no longer look at a slice of cheese or steak without hearing the cries of baby cows ripped away from their mothers. I dug into some more research over the years and found out that meat causes a wide range of illnesses such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes and obesity. So I started going vegetarian for one year, and I decided to go fully vegan in 2014, after hearing one of Gary Yourofsky’s speech. I realize how incredibly easy it was to go vegan because there are so many vegan alternatives to pretty much any food you can think of. Plus, if you had a choice to live a compassionate and healthy life without killing any sentient beings then why not live it!?”
