To make it even easy for you, I will split it to two categories: Before the trip and during the trip.

Before the trip:

[
1.Preparation]

Preparation is the key of success. Whatever you do before the trip, will help you during the trip. Find as more as possible information for the countries you are going to visit. You already made the most important part, by reading this book. Thank you about it

2.When to go?

There is not so many options, it has to be June, July or August. Before that and after that you risk to find a lot of flooded rivers and snow in the picks.

3.Temperatures

It will be hot. Make sure that you have the right gear for riding on hot weather. The temperatures go over 40 C. Drink a lot of water – bring camel back system.

4.Visas

The first extremely important step is application for all necessary visas. This matter is really complicated or, more precisely, it is slow. Living and travelling in Europe, one is almost used to thinking that having no borders is quite normal. However, the case is not such when you have to travel in Asia. You will go through the territories of Georgia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kirgizstan, Kazakhstan and Russia. Did you count them all? Seven in total and you are in luck because you don’t need a visa to travel to Georgia. A week or two and a whole bunch of documents for each visa…you will face quite a long bureaucratic battle. Naturally, there is also an easy way – you go to a large tourist office and they will prepare everything for you. For those of you who I assume are like us, you will have to face this bureaucracy head on – it is the ruling force in each embassy. Faceless bored-out-of-their-minds civil servants hiding behind bulletproof glass and using the power they have acquired for a limited period of time to make your life difficult and persuade you to give up before you’ve started. They want to make you suffer in pain, surrender and beg for help.

And on I will proceed to explain the essentials:

Azerbaijan

This is the first country after Georgia for which you will need a visa. It is not difficult, but you need a little effort.

- Passport, valid for at least 6 months passed the date you submit your visa application

- An invitation from a citizen of Azerbaijan or a hotel reservation. If it is an invitation, it has to be written by hand and to be accompanied by a copy of the passport of the inviting party / the host. It can be a scanned copy; it does not have to be an original.

- Copy of the ownership of the motorcycle / automobile

- Application form – they provide it there or it is accessible on the embassy’s website

- 2 passport photos

- A bank receipt of the paid fee

There is a 10-day visa processing time. Price? A one-month visa costs 35 Euro.

Turkmenistan

The easiest way is to get a transit visa. You can attain it very easy when you already have visas for Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan. It can be applied for in the Embassy of Turkmenistan in Baku. Necessary documents:

- A passport, valid at least 6 months after the date of your application submission

- A copy of the ownership of the motorcycle / automobile

- Application form – they provide it there or it is accessible on the embassy’s website

- A bank receipt of the paid fee

- A copy of your driver’s license

- A detailed map of where you are planning to pass through and exact dates

Here, it was a tad more difficult for us. The planned route was clear but the dates, not. A transit visa is issued for a maximum of 5 days. Usually, three days are plenty but, because of the fact that we have to make our entry from Azerbaijan with a ferry, and it does not have a clear schedule, it was not quite clear exactly when we plan to enter the country. The embassy offered to issue us an invitation with which we’d receive our visas at the border. This was fine by us.

The price of the invitation – 15 Euro; processing time – 10 days.

Uzbekistan

Here, the procedure is a little more difficult. It is mandatory that you have an invitation from a licensed tourist agency. In our case, it was (and I recommend) www.stantours.com. [email protected].

True professionals, they act fast and have excellent communication in English and Russian. Processing time is up to 2 weeks. The price of the invitation is USD 70 per person.

Necessary documents for the embassy:

- A passport, valid at least 6 months after the date of the application submission

- Application form – from the website of the embassy. It is filled online and then must be printed

- 1 passport photo

- A bank receipt of the paid fee

Processing time – 4 work days. Price – 80 Euro.

Tajikistan

The visa is issued easily without any hassle. Required documents:

- A passport, valid at least 6 months after the date of the application submission

- Application form – you can obtain it there or from the website of the embassy

- 1 passport photo

- A bank receipt of the paid fee

Processing time – 7 work days. Price – 50 Euro.
