Advances in Radiation Therapy for the Treatment of Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma

Read more Mesothelioma Cancer articles: http://j.mp/29Nv3es

Radiation therapy is one of the earliest form of treatment for mesothelioma and other forms of cancer. Ionizing radiations are targeted at the tumor cells in a beam to dissolve the growing tumor cells. The primitive radiation therapy has some disadvantages including the increased risk of cell toxicity. This has necessitated that more research should be done to improve the applicability of radiation therapy.

Mesothelioma is mainly caused by asbestos

Inhaled asbestos particles find their way into the pleura of the lungs and chest cavity. As they continue to accumulate, they result in disruption of normal cellular activity and accumulation of fluid in the pleura spaces.

The survival rate of mesothelioma is low

Malignant mesothelioma is one of the deadliest forms of cancer. The survival rate is very low. Most of the patients diagnosed of malignant mesothelioma does not exceed a few months. A research was conducted using sixteen patients and it was discovered that out of the sixteen, the median overall survival rate was seventeen months. Sixty nine percent of the patients had a survival rate of 1 year and only about twenty eight percent crossed into the second year.

Radiation therapy has not been used for unresectable patients

A number of reasons have been responsible for limiting the successful use of traditional radiation therapy for unresectable patients. This is because of the advanced nature of the disease and the inability to deliver effective doses of radiation therapy safely.

Radiation therapy presents side effects in some patients

A research was conducted where some patients were given a mean radiation dose of 4680 cGy. The tolerance varied among the various patients. Seven patients that received the treatment suffered from severe pneumonitis. Out of the seven, one died two months after treatment; one was incubated one month after treatment and the remaining five patients suffered from acute grade three pneumonitis.

IMRT is an advanced form of radiation

Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) is a modification of the traditional radiation therapy. It is a manipulation of the photon and proton beams of the working radiation to imitate the shape of the tumor. IMRT gives improvement to the potential control of the beams. However, severe toxicity is common too.

The use of radiation therapy for pleural mesothelioma is challenging

With the lungs intact, it is often difficult to use radiation therapy because of the risk of pneumonitis. The conventional radiation therapy for pleural mesothelioma had limited effectiveness. The traditional therapy is also very invasive and leads to wanton cell damage.

Pneumonectomy makes the use of radiation therapy more tolerable

Pneumonectomyis the total or partial removal of a lung. When this has been done, there will be an increase in the local control of radiation. Improved IMRT guidelines and technique might be safer but the potential benefit of IMRT has to be weighed against the risk of fatal pneumonitis. Radiation therapy usually has a specified dose of administration but it is unclear if administering extra 10 Gy would have any beneficial effect on the patient.

Improved intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) has shown some success

IMRT has been used in the entire hemithoracic pleura with patients with two intact lungs. This is also referred to as non-pneumonectomy. There was a level of local control achieved and the absence of pneumonitis in the process which is a glimmer of hope for mesothelioma patients who may not be willing to have part of the lung removed.

Mesothelioma Types and Prognosis

Read more Mesothelioma Cancer articles: http://j.mp/29Nv3es

Mesothelioma is almost always associated with exposure to asbestos. It is a form of cancer that is most frequently results from the cells lining the sac of the chest (known as the pleura) or the abdomen (known as the peritoneum). The chest cavity and lungs are the areas most associated with mesothelioma. Mesothelioma arises from the cells lining the chest or abdominal cavities.

Latency period affects diagnosis and prognosis of mesothelioma

Mesothelioma has a long latency period of twenty to fifty years. At this point, there may be no symptoms of the disease or the symptoms may resemble those of respiratory infections. The long latency period often affect the diagnosis and prognosis and this factor varies with the different types of mesothelioma.

Different factors can affect the prognosis of mesothelioma

Among the factors that can affect the prognosis of mesothelioma are the size of the tumor, where the tumor is located and the extent of other symptoms like accumulation of fluid in the lungs or abdomen. The type of mesothelioma is also a factor that affects the prognosis because different types of mesothelioma occur in different locations and present different symptoms.

Some mesotheliomas are more common than the others

There are three types of mesothelioma namely pleural, peritoneal and pericardial mesothelioma. Pleural mesothelioma is the most common among the three forms. The symptoms are presented in the chest area. The form that is rarest is the pericardial mesothelioma and is implicated with the sac surrounding the heart. Peritoneal mesothelioma affects the organs in the abdomen and presents symptoms like nausea, vomiting, abdominal swelling and obstruction of the bowel.

Early diagnosis can affect prognosis

The prognosis of mesothelioma depends to a long extent on the aggressive treatment used on the patient. Early diagnosis can also affect the prognosis of mesothelioma. The cell type has a huge role to play on mesothelioma prognosis.

Two types of cells develop into mesothelioma

Cancerous cells are cells that have lost all genetic controls to their growth and division. Two types of cells are known to have the potential to develop into mesothelioma cancer and they are epithelioid cells and sarcomatoid cells.

There is a device that can be used for prognosis

As technology continues to grow, more medical devices are made to speed up diagnosis of some common disease and health problems. PrognostiCheck is one of those devices that have been developed to measure prognosis and severity of the disease. The device works by measuring the resistance, reactance and phase angle in a noninvasive way.

Medical treatment options are diverse for mesothelioma victims

There is no definitive cure for mesothelioma and other forms of cancer. The different treatment options available are either geared at reducing the size of the tumor or relieving the pain the patient is going through. When the tumor is very big, surgery is usually employed to remove it. Chemotherapy is one of the early treatment options that have been employed for the treatment of mesothelioma and other forms of cancers but the setback to this treatment option is that it is too invasive and can lead to loss of large number of healthy cells.

The future of mesothelioma victims is bright

There have been ongoing research to develop more effective treatment options for mesothelioma and some of them have been very promising. Recent treatment options are more specific and require less dosage to reach the target cells.

The Anxiety behind Mesothelioma

Read more Mesothelioma Cancer articles: http://j.mp/29Nv3es

Being diagnosed of mesothelioma may sound like being sentenced to death by firing squad. No one in their right senses would know his or her life is ticking away and will not be faced with some form of anxiety. There are visible signs to know if one is anxious or not.

Anxiety can make treatment for mesothelioma more difficult

A level of anxiety can be considered as normal but when elevated to a certain height, it may become a health risk. Patients undergoing mesothelioma treatment needs to be in a relaxed mental state as mental stress would affect the growth and development of healthy cells. Research has shown that forty four percent of cancer patients report some form of anxiety while twenty one percent would report elevated anxiety requiring treatment.

A number of risk factors have been associated with anxiety

There are certain factors that have been pinpointed as the predisposing factors for anxiety among patients undergoing cure for mesothelioma. These factors include uncontrolled pain, cancer progression against treatment, and lack of emotional support, drug or alcohol abuse. Those who cannot take good care of themselves due to elevated pain will soon become anxious.

There is genetic factor to anxiety

Anxiety does not only result from what happens around the patient. Those with personal or family history of anxiety disorder would need to be more prone to getting the disorder if it has been passed down from their parents. Those with history of physical or emotional trauma may be psychologically more predisposed to becoming anxious because of past experience.

Anxiety needs to be tackled when it becomes a major problem

Like mentioned earlier, a mild case of anxiety can be considered normal but when it begins to affect your health, it needs to be handled professionally. Anxiety becomes a problem when it begins to affect your sleep habit, weight or appetite, ability to work, ability to complete your mesothelioma treatment or make decision about your care and your relationship with others.

Mesothelioma patient needs to be screened for anxiety

The National Comprehensive Cancer Network in 1999 recommended that cancer patients would need to undergo routine screening and treatment for elevated anxiety and other forms of emotional distress. Now many oncology practices have made routine screening for symptoms of anxiety compulsory for their mesothelioma patients and onward referral to mental health professionals.

Anti-anxiety medications can be used with mesothelioma treatment

There are a good number of anti-anxiety medications that can be used with mesothelioma and they are as follows, Xanax (Alprazolam), Ativan (Lorazepam), Valium (Diazepam) and Klonopin (Clonazepam). Ativan is usually used alongside chemotherapy because it also has an anti-emetic effect.

Cancer patients may be reluctant to take anxiety medication

Staying on cancer medication is already a big deal and becoming addicted to another medication can be a huge problem and this is one of the reasons why mesothelioma patients may be reluctant about taking anxiety medication. Unknown to those groups of people is that short term use of such drugs can significantly improve their quality of life.

Counseling and other techniques can be used to reduce anxiety

For patients that may be reluctant about anxiety medications, there are other techniques that can be used to help them overcome their anxiety. Psychotherapy is employed to challenge the irrational belief that contributes to the patient’s anxiety. Learning about mesothelioma can help patients understand that it is not as bad as they may have thought. Lack of knowledge on a subject matter is bound to increase anxiety.

Predisposing Factors to Mesothelioma

Read more Mesothelioma Cancer articles: http://j.mp/29Nv3es

Mesothelioma has been a pain in the skin of healthcare providers who have battled for decades to find a cure for the cancer. Till date, there has been no drug that has been successfully developed, tested and approved for the treatment of mesothelioma. The ailment is currently fought using a combination of therapy to ease the pain of the patient and prolong their life for a few months.

Asbestos is the leading cause of mesothelioma

Extensive studies carried out over the years have shown that there is a positive association between mesothelioma and asbestos. In other words, exposure to asbestos leads to mesothelioma. This study has been found to be true and hence workers in factories that produce asbestos are warned to protect themselves from inhaling the dust.

Countries that lead in the production of asbestos

Even though asbestos have been identified as the leading cause of mesothelioma, there are countries that still harvest this material in large volumes. Russia is leading on the log with the production of over 1 million metric tons followed by China with four hundred thousand metric tons, and then Brazil ranks third with the production of two hundred and seventy thousand metric tons. Other countries on the list with high amount of asbestos production are Kazakhstan and Canada with two hundred and fourteen thousand metric tons and one hundred thousand metric tons respectively.

Asbestos is a commercial name of hydrated silicate fibrous material

What is termed asbestos is actually a complex fibrous material consisting of silicate and water. There are two types of asbestos. The several types of asbestos are known by different names which include serpentine, Chrysotile, amphibole, amosite, crocidolite, tremolite, anthophyllite and actinolite.

A large number of people were exposed to asbestos in the US

Between 1940 and 1978, it was estimated that a total number of 11 million people were exposed to asbestos in the US. Though not everyone that gets exposed to asbestos automatically come down with mesothelioma but the large number of exposure will increase the likelihood of more mesothelioma patients in the future.

Mesothelioma has a long latency period

When a disease or health problem is latent, it is not easily discovered until the onset of clinical signs and symptoms. This is one of the factors that make mesothelioma deadly. Its correct diagnosis usually comes when the damage has been done. The latency period for mesothelioma is put at between twenty five and fifty years. This is why most of the patients are old people.

The rise in the cases of mesothelioma in the US is connected with early exposure

A lot of asbestos materials were used during the Second World War. From 1970 to 1990, the United States of America witnessed a sharp rise in the number of mesothelioma cases. These cases must have resulted to the exposure to asbestos during the war but it remained latent till that period in time.

There are other potential causes of mesothelioma

Some cancer cases have been linked to genetic factors. A mutation in the cells can cause them to divide unstoppably. A potential cause of cell mutation is radiation to supradiphragmatic fields. Another potential cause is zeolites.

Asbestos is under regulation

Following the discovery of the association between asbestos and mesothelioma, the compound was put under regulation in the 1980s. However, trace amount of the compound can be allowed legally. Developing countries have not put a strong regulation on the compound and it is still used in many developing countries in large amount.

Some Complementary Therapies for Mesothelioma Cancer Patients

Read more Mesothelioma Cancer articles: http://j.mp/29Nv3es

It took a while before it could be established that mesothelioma was caused by exposure to asbestos. Cancers generally have not definitive cure. Some people get lucky and after a combination of therapies, they become free of cancerous cells. The term survivors are used to describe such people.

A combination of therapies have been developed to help cancer patients

There are various therapies that have been employed to bring succor to mesothelioma victims. Chemotherapy was one of the earliest forms of treatment used to assist cancer patients. There is also the radiation which indiscriminately kills the tumor cells and healthy body cells. New therapies that are more invasive and more specific are also in development to help bring total cure to cancer victims.

Alternative therapies are promoted ahead of mainstream treatment

The physicist, Robert Park, the author of seven signs of voodoo science explains that believe in other alternative ways of cancer treatment is sensible since these alternative therapies has endured for decades or centuries. If they were not potent, they would have been phased out naturally over the years. Alternative therapies are very invasive and can be a potential source of harm to the biological being.

Complimentary treatments usually accompany mainstream treatment

Complementary treatment is usually no-invasive, meaning they are mostly superficial and are used alongside mainstream treatment to manage the more serious cases of mesothelioma. Since they are non-invasive, they are inexpensive to be carried out, safe and their use is based on verifiable evidence documented over the years. Complimentary therapy includes all physical exercises.

Exercise that cancer survivors should do

ACS and ASCM in a guideline presented on June 6, 2010 highlighted some exercises that cancer survivors should be doing. They recommended that they do a rigorous activity five times every week for thirty minutes or more. Physical or aerobic activities that would last for 45 to 60 minutes are most recommended. If the survivor is sedentary, then they can start with 10 minutes of exercise and make up a total of 30 min continuously.

Lack of physical activity predisposes one to cancer

Although mesothelioma is asbestos linked cancer because the asbestos particles when inhaled settles on the lining of the lungs causing accumulation of fluid in the lymph. Somehow, the accumulated fluid leads to genetic mutation of the cells leading to loss of contact inhibition of cell division normal cells go through. Lack of physical exercise has been known to exacerbate the situation.

Energy dense food should be avoided by survivors

Nutrition has a part to play in the care of cancer patient. A balanced diet in general helps the body to fend off infection. It is better for a cancer patient to be as lean as possible but not underweight. Energy dense foods and sugary foods should be avoided because these classes of food help cell growth. The cells are already malfunctioning and you wouldn’t want to feed them further. Red meat and processed meat should be avoided as much as possible too. There should be a mark on salt intake because it does not go well with cancer.

Both complementary and alternative therapies promote behavioral change

The essence of these therapies other than the mainstream treatment is to encourage the survivors to have some sort of behavioral change. Even when survivors have been healed to some extent, things like exercise become a part of them because they have been doing it for a while. Alcoholism is also one habit that alternative therapy will encourage you to drop because it also predisposes one to cancer.

Does Alternative Therapy Work for Mesothelioma?

Read more Mesothelioma Cancer articles: http://j.mp/29Nv3es

Mesothelioma is one form of cancer that manifests in old age among people that have had chronic exposures to asbestos particles in their younger ages. The big problem with mesothelioma is the long latency period in which case the patient will not be aware that there is something terrible going on within their bodies.

Alternative therapies do not necessarily focus on the cancer

Though the main aim of every therapy given to a cancer patient is to cure the disease, alternative therapy usually focuses to remove the effect of the disease on the mind of the individual. Usually, alternative therapy is integrated into the other forms of healing. Currently such alternative therapies such as nutrition and yoga are incorporated into treatment regimen.

A little is known so far on the effect of alternative therapy

Till date, not much has been documented on the success of alternative therapy in the cure of mesothelioma. However, there are speculations in some quarters that the incorporation of alternative therapy into the treatment regimen has been effective in increasing the number of survivors. More research needs to be carried out on majority of alternative and complementary therapies to truly ascertain their effectiveness in the cure of this malady.

The difference between complementary and alternative medicine is not known to many

People often mistake alternative and complementary medicine to mean the same thing but this is not true. The two differ slightly though they still share some interests. Complementary therapy is usually exclusive for those procedures combined with mainstream medicine. Alternative on the other hand are approaches adopted in place of mainstream medicine. However, both terms describe procedures that trace their origin outside the mainstream medicine.

Alternative therapy for mesothelioma is not common

Because of limited information on the efficacy of non-mainstream medicine, it is rare – if not impossible – to see a mesothelioma patient using strictly alternative medicine to try to cure the ailment. The common practice is for people to combine non-mainstream medications with mainstream medications. This approach is called integrative medicine. So far, this has proven to be effective for some people.

Integrative therapies have become the order of the day

There are some complementary therapies that have been clinically proven to be effective against cancer. Their union with conventional medicines has led to springing up of various integrated oncology programs in the United States.

Justification to the use of alternative and complementary therapies can be traced to history

Long ago, before the development of modern medicine, a number of maladies where cured using alternative and complementary therapies. In several parts of the world especially parts of Africa, such practices are still in vogue. Their current use as palliative for mesothelioma must have been borne out of historical antecedence.

An overwhelming number of people with cancer resort to complementary therapy

It is on record that over seventy percent of cancer patients have settled for complementary therapies as their only source of cure. These may present a serious problem because majority of complementary therapies have not been verified.

Alternative therapy focuses on mental healing

A good mental state of a patient suffering from any disease is very important because it not only facilitates or stimulates healing but also affects their attitude towards life. Most faith based organizations will organize prayers and other spiritual exercise which in the end will make the patient to have some sort of mental calmness and improve their attitude towards life. Ensuring mental stability is usually the prime target of alternative therapies.

Various Drug Effects on Mesothelioma

Read more Mesothelioma Cancer articles: http://j.mp/29Nv3es

Cancers arise when the cells rapidly divide without the control of the normal body regulatory mechanisms. Mesothelioma is one form of cancer that is linked to inhalation of asbestos particles. The treatment of cancers, with mesothelioma in focus here, aims to limit the spread of the cancer and shrink the existing tumor.

Mesothelioma is a problem because it leads to tissue and organ damage

If the resulting tumor from the rapid division of cells is allowed unchecked, it can expand and block off blood vessels. We all know that the flow of blood in the body is necessary because nutrients and oxygen are carried in the blood to different organs of the body. If organs and tissues are starved of oxygen and nutrients, a serious medical condition may result. For example, if the brain is starved of oxygen, stroke will result.

Cancer treatments are not done in isolation

There are various drugs that have been formulated over the years to combat the spread of cancer and limit the growth of the resulting tumor. Administration of these drugs is often combined with other therapies such as surgery and radiation for a better and expedited result. This combination is called multimodal therapy and has been found to produce better result.

Medicines are grouped into categories based on how they work

Different medication affects the cancer in different way – although all of them strive to achieve the same goal which is to shrink the tumor and limit the spread of the cancer. Based on these, cancer therapies are categorized into targeted therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, anti-angiogenesis and photosensitizing. Some of these drugs are already in use while others are still in the testing and may become usable in the nearest future.

Chemotherapy has been in use for a long time

Of all the different therapies that have been developed or still in development, chemotherapy is by far the oldest of them all and a number of chemotherapy drugs are available in the market. The work of chemotherapeutic agent is to attack actively and rapidly dividing cells. Its use has not been smooth for all patients because of side effects but it is still considered one of the best forms of therapy.

Chemotherapeutic agents are used in stages

Chemotherapeutic agents are often used in combinations i.e. different chemotherapeutic drugs are used together. There are combinations that are considered suitable for first line of action. If they fail or are not properly tolerated by the host, the second and third line of defense (also combinations) are used.

Chemotherapeutic drugs are synthetic

Not all the chemotherapeutic agents are synthetic but majority of them are. A few of them are semisynthetic meaning that part of the drug is extracted from nature particularly the flowering plant called periwinkle while the other half is produced in the lab.

Chemotherapy side effects vary with patients

The common side effects associated with use of chemotherapeutic drugs are hair loss, bruising, bleeding, fatigue and impaired vision or hearing. The drugs are powerful enough to disrupt digestion and some patients may report stomach pain, vomiting, nausea and their stool become dark.

Targeted therapy affects only cancerous cells

Chemotherapy is non-discriminating and kills both healthy and cancerous cells. A modification of this is the targeted therapy which attacks only cancerous cells.Targeted therapy targets specific molecular alterations that cause the development, growth, metastasis and death of cancer.

Immunotherapy focuses on the patient’s immune system

While the first two mentioned therapies focus on the cancer cells, immunotherapy aims to boostthe immune system of the victim to enable them better fight the cancerous cells.

Mesothelioma Therapies that are Body Based Provide Relief

Read more Mesothelioma Cancer articles: http://j.mp/29Nv3es

Mesothelioma does not present symptoms in the latency stage. The absence of symptoms is the major reason for its late diagnosis. The diagnosis of mesothelioma usually occurs at the later part of the disease when the cancer must have been largely developed. When the symptoms begin to come, they are often too much to handle for any patient.

Body based therapies can be used to reduce the symptoms

Mesothelioma symptoms are mostly presented with such symptoms like stress, pain and anxiety. Such symptoms may be hard to combat with mainstream medicine. Most cancer patients that are presented with such crisis often resort to complementary and alternative medicine which has been shown to provide great relief.

A number of symptoms are associated with cancer

There are a wide range of symptoms that can be presented to a cancer patient. Some of these symptoms are hard to cope with, often requiring the patient to seek immediate form of relief. Some of the known symptoms are headaches, migraines, joint pains or arthritis, pain of the lower back, pain of the neck and shoulder, vomiting or nausea and anxiety.

It is not right to opt for body-based therapy without the supervision of a professional

It is normal to see cancer patients who on their own would opt for one form of body based therapy or the other. What they forget in a hurry is that the form and stage of the cancer would affect the type of therapy one should be given and also the effect of the therapy on the individual. Some body-based therapies have not been proved to be clinically effective and may turn out to be a gross waste of time.

Body based therapy is easy to practice

The practice of body based therapy is a non-professional therapy that can easily be carried out by anyone. In body based therapy various parts of the body are moved manually. The aim of body based therapy is to relieve pains of the bones, joints, soft tissues, the circulatory and lymphatic systems of the body.

Various therapies are used in the care of cancer

Since cancer does not have a definitive cure, most of the therapies used for its management are aimed at reducing the progression of the tumors and handle the resulting pain. For this reason, a number of therapies have been developed for mesothelioma and they include acupuncture, therapeutic massage, chiropractic care and TENS.

TENS stands for transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation

This therapy focuses on relieving the pain felt by cancer patients. TENS is carried out using low voltage electrical current[*. Electrodes with wires are attached to the skin and this wire is connected to a small battery pack. *] The attachment is usually done on the places that the patient is experiencing those pains. A Complete Mesothelioma Care Program

The race to completely eradicate the problem posed by mesothelioma using mainstream medicine alone has hit a brick wall in more than one ways. Mainstream medicine has been found to be inadequate in eradication the tumor and their use often result in the death of healthy cells of the patient, hence a disturbing amount of side effects.

Primary complete healing program is the alternative medicine

Alternative medicines are those types of medication that deviates from what is generally known about mainstream medicine. The way they are practiced may not be in tandem with what is known in conventional mainstream medicine. However, there is no disputing the fact that they are efficient in the treatment of cancer.

There are a number of alternative medicines that are in use currently

The use of alternative medicine for the treatment of various kinds of diseases including cancer – which mesothelioma falls into – has a long history. Their efficacy has been tried through centuries and that is why their use has persisted up till today. Some of the well-known and highly practiced alternative medications for cancer are Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda.

Alternative medicine focuses more on the patient rather than the disease

Alternative medicine sees the manifestation of a disease as a result of deeper imbalance in the system of the patient therefore will focus more on correcting the imbalance rather than on the patient. The idea is that when the imbalance is corrected, the patient will be restored to optimal health.

Herbal medication is the primary mode of treatment of cancer by alternative medicine

There are various modalities employed by alternative medicine in the treatment of various diseases. Some of the modalities are energy therapies, herbalism and mind-body therapy. Out of the three mentioned therapies, herbalism is considered the primary mode of cancer treatment by both Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Traditional Chinese Medicine is the most practiced cancer treatment in China

It is on record that about seventy two clinical trials on cancer carried out in China dating back to 1900, a combination of Traditional Chinese Medicine and conventional therapies have been used. For example, chemotherapy (which is the foremost accepted cancer therapy in conventional medicine) is combined with mind-body therapies or acupuncture. This combination helped reduce the side effect that results from chemotherapy.

Plant extracts are incorporated in mesothelioma and other cancer drugs

One of the evidence that proves the efficacy of herbs in the cure of cancer is the fact that most of the known cancer drugs have extracts or parts of plant materials in them. There are a good number of herbs and roots that have been extensively studied and their anti-cancer properties identified. Some of them are Astragalus, Asparagus root, Jin fukang, Licorice root, oldenlandiadiffusa, poria and yangzhengxiaoji.

Ayurveda means the knowledge of life

The practice of Ayurveda believes that the development of cancer is as a result of the body control systems going out of balance. They call these body control systems doshas. Doshas comprises of the venous system (Pitta), the nervous system (Vata) and the arterial system (Kapha). They believe that asbestos is the initiator of the imbalance in mesothelioma.

Working with a licensed professional is paramount

It may interest you to know that there is a contrast existing between TCM and Ayurveda. The only meeting point of the two is that the overall wellness of the patient is their aim. Prescription of herbs is based on individual and may vary among individuals with the same diagnosis. This makes it crucial to work with a professional.

Therapies that Deals with Emotional Challenges of Mesothelioma

Read more Mesothelioma Cancer articles: http://j.mp/29Nv3es

The moment one has been diagnosed of cancer, the realization often comes like a huge shock which is accompanied by emotional outpour. If the emotions are not put under check, they may adversely affect the patient leading to more debilitating illnesses like high blood pressure, depression and stroke.

Emotional therapies help patient cope with mesothelioma

One way of dealing with the emotional stress that comes with mesothelioma is by using emotional therapies. Emotional outburst can come during or after treatment for different reasons. Emotional therapies can be by meditation, counseling or pet therapy but the target of all of them is to help the patient cope with the emotional stress.

Emotional therapies reduces stress

Emotional therapies work on the patient to reduce their mental stress. Stress is known to reduce the level of immunity of the patient. When the emotional therapies reduce stress, the patient would have a better chance at healing.

Meditation is the core of emotional treatment

The practice of meditation will help the patient to become more aware of themselves. Not only will meditation solve emotional and spiritual problems, it can also solve physical problems too. One of the core results that can be obtained through meditation is reduction in depression. It can also bring relief to physical discomfort and anxiety.

Survival rate is improved by meditation

There are studies that claim that meditation can reduce the rate of cancer patient’s tumor growth by ten percent. Although this claim has not been widely verified, what is known is that meditation can improve the survival rate of cancer patients.

Utilization of meditation in medical field is to reduce grief

Treatment of angry or grieving patients is one of the most difficult tasks in the medical profession. When patients are faced with life threatening conditions, it is normal for them to become angry especially in when their suffering can be linked to the mistake of another person – like in mesothelioma which is most common among workers that have had long exposure to asbestos particles.

Meditation is grouped into two categories

There are several types of meditations. Each ethnicity or religion has their own ways of meditation but the two main types are the spiritually-framed meditation and the non-spiritual meditation. Their names are derived from the motive behind the meditation.

Spiritual meditation is done for reassurance

As Karl Max said, ‘religion is the opium of the masses’. Most religion practices believe in a supernatural being and a life beyond the present one. Since some doctors would give cancer patients a probable time they will live, prayer, reading of spiritual books and meditating upon them can provide reassurance. Prayer and quiet reflection has been known to reduce anxiety and anger.

Non-spiritual meditation is done to improve mental awareness

It is not all the time that meditation will have a religious connotation. A survey was once carried out on non-religious cancer patients. The findings of the survey showed that they practiced meditation for the purpose of obtaining peace of mind.

Counseling is an important part of meditation

There is a popular saying that no man is an island and it is common to see mesothelioma patients who can no longer cope with the aggressive treatment plan – popping pills into the mouth at specific times. At such points, they need someone to reassure them.

Always choose your counselor wisely

Just anyone cannot be a good counselor. Choose someone that has experience with cancer, preferably someone that works in a cancer facility. Your counselor should have a good listening ear, be caring and at least have a degree.
