The Common Facts You Should Know about Mesothelioma

Read more Mesothelioma Cancer articles: http://j.mp/29Nv3es

Several insinuations have floated round about mesothelioma that some people now cannot differentiate the facts from the mere gossips. Once, it was rumored that mesothelioma was communicable i.e. could be transferred from one person to another through direct contact. There are other true sides to the story which is often neglected. Some of those very important facts about mesothelioma are as follows;

Asbestos exposure causes Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer whose cause has been found to be related to exposure to asbestos. In other words, those that expose themselves to asbestos are at a higher risk of coming down with this disease.

Cancer starts when cells start dividing uncontrollably

For growth and body maintenance to occur, cells normally divide. There is a mechanism known as contact inhibition which also puts this cell division in check so that the cells do not multiply out of control. When dividing cells touch each other, a message is sent that stops them from dividing further. However, cancerous cells have lost this ability making them divide uncontrollably resulting to a mass known as tumor.

Two primary cause of Mesothelioma

Like earlier mentioned, the main cause of Mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos and this leads to development of the most common type of Mesothelioma called plural mesothelioma.

It is mostly formed in lungs and abdomen

Cancers are mostly localized to particular organs or tissues, hence where they get their names from for example, cancer of the lungs, cancer of the blood (anemia), prostate cancer and so on. In the case of Mesothelioma, the cancer is formed on the linings of the lungs and abdomen and other parts of the body.

Symptoms: Cough, muscle weakness, night sweats, fever

A particular symptom may not tell you much about because varied illnesses may present a common symptom. This is the mere reason you have to go to the hospital for proper screening when you don’t feel alright. Symptoms of Mesothelioma include cough, weakness of the muscles, night sweats and fever. Most of these symptoms are akin to normal lung disease like flu which makes it more difficult to detect at a glance.

Patient survival rate varies

People have survived from it but the rate of survival varies depending on the location of the cancer and how early the disease was detected. This is the more reason why regular screening is important.

It may 20 to 50 years for symptoms to manifest

It is estimated that after prolonged exposure to asbestos, symptoms of Mesothelioma would likely take somewhere around twenty to fifty years to manifest. This shows that Mesothelioma is more common among the elderly. The gap from exposure to development of symptoms is called latency period.

Men are more susceptible to Mesothelioma

Research has shown that men are more at risk of developing the disease compared to women. About two to ten percent of people that has a prolonged exposure to asbestos will come down with the disease.

Military, can paints, toxic chemicals are common sources

It is good to look at those that have higher risk of exposure to asbestos and the most likely source and they include military, can of paints, toxic chemical handlers and so on.

Mesothelioma Patients Should Beware of Asbestos Exposure

Read more Mesothelioma Cancer articles: http://j.mp/29Nv3es

Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that is implicated with exposure to asbestos. This cancer is formed on the protective lining of various parts of the body including the lungs and abdomen. This particular cancer has a high latency period of between twenty to fifty years which often makes its detection hard from the onset. Its symptoms also resemble those of common lung diseases which make its detection even harder.

Statistics of Mesothelioma patients

Learning a little statistics will help you understand the severity of mesothelioma infection. It is approximated that eighty percent of mesothelioma is from exposure to asbestos. There are also other implications but they are minor potential causes of Mesothelioma. These include radiation and exposure to zeolites.

In the US alone, twenty million people are estimated to develop Mesothelioma in later years of their life. According to National Institutes of Health (NIH), and estimated eleven million people from 1940 to 1978 were exposed to asbestos, thereby providing a source of worry in the years to come.

Males are usually diagnosed of the disease as from the age of seventy-four while for females the age varies a little to seventy-one. Because of the latency period, ninety-one percent of those usually diagnosed are at least fifty five years and older.

Mesothelioma Survival rate is from 5% to 10%

The chances of survival has a lot to do with the period (stage) at which Mesothelioma was diagnosed. Early diagnosis is the key to survival. On the average, people diagnosed of Mesothelioma usually have two to three years to live. On the contrary, five to ten percent of survivors will live up to five years.

Global statistics – 43,000 people die globally

It is on estimate that forty three thousand people die globally from Mesothelioma with the highest rates recorded in Australia, Belgium and Great Britain. These regions have at least thirty cases in every one million people.

It is also estimated that come 2020, the cases of Mesothelioma in developed countries may skyrocket beyond ten percent annually. Though no particular reason was given for this projection but it seems to have something to do with the level of global pollution which is by the way more in the developed countries.

Mesothelioma awareness – keep away from asbestos

Since every finger points to asbestos as the primary source of Mesothelioma, it is therefore very important to enlighten patients and the entire populace on the need to protect themselves from chronic exposure to this carcinogenic element. Patients who are already down with mesothelioma will need to be more cautious in protecting themselves from further exposure to asbestos which would further exacerbate the situation.

Awareness is possible through radio, fliers, and TV

Mesothelioma can take the form of jingles on the radio, fliers and television adverts which are the fastest and widest means of disseminating information in this current technological era. Furthermore, mesothelioma can take the form of legislatures that would mandate working environments that handle some of these carcinogenic substances to modify their working environment to reduce the exposure of their staff to these substances.

If nothing is done to check the current exposure to asbestos, in the coming years, the earth may lose all her grey hairs to this disease.

An Overview about Mesothelioma

Read more Mesothelioma Cancer articles: http://j.mp/29Nv3es

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer. Exposure to asbestos increases one’s risk of having the disease. It is found on the lining of protective tissues of the body including lungs and abdomen. Mesothelioma is often regarded as a disease of the old age because of its pattern of expression.

Latency period is from 20 to 50 years

Unlike other diseases that has immediate or near immediate manifestation, Mesothelioma has a prolonged latency period of between twenty and fifty years. During this period, the cancerous cells continue to grow out of control till symptoms begins to manifest.

It is estimated that in all cases of Mesothelioma, the victim must have crossed 55 years. Also, the average age at which the disease is detected in developed countries is 74 years but in most cases women would begin to show signs from 71 years.

Four symptoms – fever, muscle weakness, night sweats and cough

It is often hard to diagnose this disease because of lack of specific symptoms. Early symptoms are often homologous to everyday ailment and occurrence which would hence cause the confusion in diagnosis. The early symptoms usually include fever, weakness of the muscles, night sweats and cough. These non-specific symptoms often lead to misdiagnosis, false dismissal or ignorance.

However, it is possible to diagnose a patient two to three months of onset of the disease. There are signs that could mean onset of Mesothelioma and should not be ignored. Such signs includes; breathing problems, pleural effusion, coughing up blood, obstruction of the bowel, anemia, and difficulty in swallowing, vomiting and nausea, problems with clotting of blood, weight loss, chest pain and peritoneal effusion.

Mesothelioma has 4 (four) stages

Mesothelioma occurs in various stages and the success of treatment and recovery lies on what stage of the disease when diagnosis was made and treatment effected. There are basically four stages of pleural Mesothelioma namely.

Stage I – the tumer is very small

At this stage, the tumor is so small and localized resulting in absence of symptoms. The mesothelioma is later diffused into the inner layer of the pleura leading to the collection of fluid between layers of the pleura otherwise known as pleura effusion. Early warnings here are those of chest pain, body aches, fever and cough. Draining of the fluid is by surgical process if need be.

Stage II – the tumor begins to spread

The tumor is still localized but soon begins to spread from the pleura to the lung tissues and diaphragm resulting in further respiratory problems.

Stage III – patients get diagnosed

It is at this stage that many of the patients get diagnosed. Many of the infections at this stage will resemble those of typical lung infections like pneumonia and bronchitis. At this stage also, the tumor must have spread throughout the chest cavity affecting the lining of the heart and diaphragm likewise neighboring tissues. This stage is most characterized by fatigue, wheezing and loss of weight.

Stage IV – several body parts are affected

At this stage, the cancer must have metastasized and covered the entire chest cavity. Some organs and tissues begin to be affected too. The symptoms enlarge to include such things as night sweats and abdominal pain in addition to those mentioned earlier. Treatment at this stage will focus on alleviating the symptoms.

Role of Care-giving and Family Support for a Mesothelioma Patient

Read more Mesothelioma Cancer articles: http://j.mp/29Nv3es

Those suffering from mesothelioma often find themselves in double jeopardy. The first is that this disease often finds its expression in the elderly who are often too frail to take care of themselves and the second is that stage IV of this disease is probably incurable and treatment is focused on managing the symptoms.

Brief insights into mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a very rare form of cancer which is associated with prolonged exposure to asbestos. It affects the lining of the chest cavity, lungs and abdomen. Mesothelioma has a high latency period (the length of time before symptoms begins to manifest) of between twenty and fifty years. This is one of the reasons why most of the diagnosis made is among people above fifty years.

Family meetings can be helpful

Really, nobody can take care of you like your family because they are probably the only ones that can do it for free. It is not just enough to send such people to the hospital and leave them there. Seeing familiar faces around helps psychologically, this is why family meeting is important to decide how best to take care of the sick member and give them some sort of mental support. The reassuring voice of a family member will do a lot to the patient that cannot be compared to drugs.

Caregivers can be an alternative

It is understandable that some families are very busy or very frequent travelers and may be almost impossible to get them around. At such cases, it is good to employ the services of professional caregivers.

However, it should not only end there, these people will need to be monitored regularly by a family member to be sure they are doing the work for which they have been recruited because it doesn’t take long for complacency to set in when people are not duly placed on checks.

Mesothelioma patients face several challenges

Besides the obvious fact that the patients are already down with mesothelioma, there are other sublime challenges that they are likely to face and one of them is depression.

Depression sets in when the patient feels abandoned especially if the family members are nowhere to be found. One of the down sides of depression is that the patient begins to have suicidal tendencies.

Besides depression, there is the risk of malnutrition because people in that age range sometimes forget to take care of themselves properly. This further complicates the situation. There is also the risk of opportunistic infections that would result from poor sanitary conditions. These are some of the reasons why it is necessary for a family member or a good care giver to be around.

Treatment can be effective at stage one

The success of treatment will depend on the point at which diagnosis was made. If diagnosis came during stage I of the infection where the disease is still localized, treatment is possible but if there is a delay or due to ignorance at the early onset this diagnosis was made at the stage IV of this disease, then, the best that can be done for the patient is to try to alleviate the various symptoms.

The Principal Causes of Mesothelioma

Read more Mesothelioma Cancer articles: http://j.mp/29Nv3es

Mesothelioma is an inflammation of the mesothelium caused by prolonged exposure to asbestos fibers. These fibers get into the body through inhalation and orally and get stuck in the lining of the lungs where they cause inflammation of the pleura resulting in accumulation of fluids between the tissues. Inhaled asbestos fibers are the principal cause of pleural mesothelioma while the one that goes into the body orally is the chief cause of peritoneal mesothelioma.

The groups exposed to asbestos are at higher risk

Mesothelioma is mostly an occupational hazard. Most of the people that come down with the disease had prolonged exposure to the disease through their occupation. However, wind can blow particles of the fiber from industries to homes.

Secondary inhalation can occur when asbestos factory workers return home with the particles of the fiber settled on his cloth. At the point of removal of his cloth, the particles are carried by air and can be inhaled by other family members thereby putting them at the risk of contracting this disease.

Asbestos was used for roofing

Up until the regulation of asbestos began in 1989 in the United States by the collaborative effort of the Environmental Protection Agency and the Consumer Product Safety Commission, asbestos was the choice insulating material used for the roofing of both residential and commercial houses. And till date, they can still be found in some residential houses in developing countries. Those that have had asbestos exposure are more likely to be diagnosed of mesothelioma than those without an exposure.

Asbestos was used for its durability

The main reason why asbestos was used as choice roofing material in the past was because it was durable and could withstand extremes of temperatures. However, asbestos particles are microscopic and friable (meaning airborne or loose).

Asbestos is dangerous as it is inhaled without knowing

As asbestos is microscopic and friable, it can be inhaled easily without the person knowing it, just same way carbon monoxide is deadly because it is odorless. In both cases, the victim continues to be exposed to the carcinogenic agent without knowing they are.

When inhaled, these asbestos fibers collect on the mesothelium – a membrane that produces lubricants for organs. The function of this lubricant is to allow easy expansion and contraction of the lungs and other associated organs.

Pleural mesothelioma results when these fibers accumulate on the pleural membrane leading to inflammation and accumulation of fluid. Primary exposure was very common in the naval, paint industry, shipyards, power plants and so on. Workers in those industries often carry huge particles of asbestos on their clothes and hairs often leading to secondary exposure.

Other causes of mesothelioma – radiation and tobacco

Besides asbestos, there are other elements that have been implicated with mesothelioma and they includes;

Exposure to radiation: Radiation has a tendency to make cells mutate though this is a rare cause of mesothelioma

Tobacco smoking: It has been proven that those that take tobacco have a higher chance of coming down with mesothelioma.

The other emerging risk factor is the carbon nanotubes. When tested in the laboratory with mice, carbon nanotubes showed similar activity as asbestos when they were implanted into the test organism.

Mesothelioma Treatment with Proper Diet and Nutrition

Read more Mesothelioma Cancer articles: http://j.mp/29Nv3es

A good diet is without doubt one of the key necessities to recovering from any disease. This is why any doctor will advise a patient to go on a certain type of diet. Cancer patients are more likely to lose weight, hence necessitates the need for them to be on a balanced diet.It has also been shown that weight loss can affect the prognosis of patients suffering from mesothelioma.

A change in diet will often help a patient to feel better during cancer treatment. For example, taking high volume of water during chemotherapy can help to reduce nausea. A balanced diet will also help the body to build up more healthy cells to maintain normal cell functioning of the body. Balanced diet also helps the body fight off disease.

Mesothelioma patients often would need to contact a dietician to help them plan out their diet to make sure their body is getting the needed nutrients in the right amount. This will be a massive relief of the stress the patient would have used if allowed to do the search themselves.

A food guide is important for nutrition-rich diets

The Food Guide Pyramid was the last resort to most patients in the past because it seemed to provide an extensive nutritive guide. However, the US Department of Agriculture recalled it some years back, replacing it with My Plate which was meant to give more nutritional info where the first was wanting.

The latter still failed to extensively handle this problem prompting the faculty members of the Public Health School in Harvard to create a new guideline they tagged Healthy Eating Plate.

A feeding plan is important as eating becomes difficult

Mesothelioma like every other illness can make it difficult for the patient to eat properly. However, diet is very important for effective treatment. The idea of the guideline by the Healthy Eating Plate is to help you change the way you eat for a more efficient feeding and nutritive plan. This may mean that you will have to get food supplement from time to time.

Healthy feeding can help avoiding side effects

Treatment often affects the way a patient feeds. The most likely cause of reduced appetite for food during feeding is as a result of nausea created by drug use. Some drugs often alter the gastric pH or cause a shift in the equilibrium of gastric acids.

This is the probable cause of a number of nausea. Many of the tips presented by the Healthy Dishes are geared at helping the patient get over the possible side effects that may arise. Mesothelioma can be treated using any of either methods; surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and palliative medication. All these can alter the patient’s appetite.

Micronutrients you should look out for in food

Besides the macronutrients, there are other micronutrients that you should be on the lookout for or which should form a part of your diet if you have mesothelioma and they includes antioxidants and tannins. Antioxidants for example have a way of mopping up the free radicals from the body some thereby helping to slow down the rate of progression of the cancer.

Wonderful Effects of Long Distance Mesothelioma Care-giving

Read more Mesothelioma Cancer articles: http://j.mp/29Nv3es

Mesothelioma is a difficult situation to be handled with patience and care. Those who have been diagnosed of this asbestos linked cancer would require all the help they need from friends and family members to pull through the trauma psychologically. There is often the possibility of denial from family members who among other things may play the less concerned role.

What about a family member who really cares about the one that is afflicted but due to distance may be unable to help? If you find yourself in that category, there is a way you can show care from a distance and make the family member have a sense of belonging and strengthen them mentally.

A phone call can make all the difference

Every distance waters down under the power of phone call. Though the family member may be miles or hours away, one can easily reach them with a phone to send words of encouragement at such trying time.

You can make it a habit to call them at a particular time of the day so that the longing for your call soon replaces the fear of the disease especially when the prognosis has revealed that the patient has few years or months to live.

Care-giving with the help technology

In the past, the only distant care that was possible was probably phone calls but as technology kept growing, the story has changed for the better. Not only did it become easy to reach out to far relatives, but cheaper too.

One of the newest possibilities is the power of video calling. Video calls allow people to see each other when they are making calls. Many apps today incorporate the possibility of video calling. It is always thrilling when these patients can see their family members like they were standing in front of them.

Not only would patients get solace from family members. Growth in technology has brought about online forums. Today, there are forums dedicated to mesothelioma patients and new patients would find solace and encouragement from those who are going through the same condition or those that have survived.

Expected role of long-distance care-givers

A long distance care-giver (secondary care giver) is in a better position to gather information concerning the disease and also treatment options if there is any and relay it to those around the patient (primary care giver). Primary care giver is often too preoccupied to go into extensive research.

Coordinating services from a distance

A family member who stays a long distance away can still be able to coordinate the healthcare services of a mesothelioma stricken family member by paying the bills and/ or organizing family meetings when they deem it fit to attend to discuss on ways to further care for the sick member.

Switching places even for a short while

No amount of secondary care giving can be compared to the primary. The latter is invaluable in that the bulk of the work falls on them. So, a secondary care-giver can make out time, no matter how short to play the role of a primary care-giver and this will surely leave a lasting impression.

Campaign with Green Tea and Turmeric Oatmeal on Mesothelioma Awareness Day

Read more Mesothelioma Cancer articles: http://j.mp/29Nv3es

It is disheartening when doctors voice out the days a patient has left to live, sometimes said unapologetically. Sadly this is the bitter reality that greets over three thousand mesothelioma patients annually. The bitter part of it is that majority of those diagnosed contacted the disease at a point in their occupation.

Mesothelioma is a malignant form of lung cancer that results from prolonged exposure to asbestos fiber. Once the asbestos particles get into the lung cavity, they lodge in the tissues where they cause inflammation. Gradually, they cause the cells in the region to divide uncontrollably.

The tumor cells spreads over time to cover the entire chest cavity. One of the major problems with mesothelioma is that the early signs are mistaken for those of mild lung infections. If early interventions are carried out, the chances of a prolonged life is increased for the patient.

Mesothelioma research received poor attention

Mesothelioma has not received adequate attention like it should meaning that little research is being carried out on it. Part of the reason is because the disease has a sparse occurrence and delayed diagnosis. Surgeries have been conducted on mesothelioma patients but there is little documentation on their findings or procedures.

When the asbestos fibers enter the lungs, they can lie dormant for over 50 years on the epithelial lining of the lungs before patient begins to develop symptoms. Though the fibers cannot be seen with the naked eyes, their harm is seen with the sudden lapse in the health of the patient.

Green tea and turmeric oatmeal can help

Tea is known for its antioxidant properties. Antioxidants are very effective in mopping up the free radicals from the system. These free radicals if not taken care of can lead to the development of cancerous cells. Green tea and turmeric oatmeal are good in antioxidants and can come in handy for mesothelioma victims.

26 September – Date for mesothelioma awareness

Obviously, not very many people know about mesothelioma and the risk of asbestos exposure. Besides those that are directly affected or whose loved ones are victims already, not very many will know what it is. To make mesothelioma widely known so that people will learn to abstain from the causative agent.

On that note, the 26th of September has been set aside as Mesothelioma Awareness Day. This day will help victims to share their stories and also beam a light on their plight. The current campaign is championed by Heather and Cameron who both dedicated their life taking care of victims of the disease.

Mesothelioma should be treated as global enemy

Mesothelioma needs to be made a global enemy and the awareness against it should be expanded. When people working in places where they are constantly exposed to asbestos get to know about the disaster this can bring in later life, they will learn to protect themselves from inhaling much of asbestos.

Need for improved government policy for potection

Government policies have to be put in place to compel organizations that work on asbestos related compounds to take measures to protect their staff from the risk of exposure by inhalation or other means.

Transparency Claims on the Bill for Asbestos Mesothelioma

Read more Mesothelioma Cancer articles: http://j.mp/29Nv3es

Majority of the recorded mesothelioma cases are as a result of occupational hazard. Most of the people that suffer from mesothelioma have had acute exposure to asbestos from their workplace without any measures taken by the organization to provide a form of protection to their workers.

Based on this, testimonies were heard by the US House of Representatives on the bill “Furthering Asbestos Claim Transparency Act of 2015” on the 4th of February 2015. Some of the critics to the bill argued if the bill would provide a fair process for transparency claims. On the other hand, it is viewed by some of the house members as unwarranted invasion into the private life of those who have been injured by asbestos.

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer caused by asbestos

Mesothelioma is an asbestos linked cancer. Its symptoms resemble those of the common lung infections. The disease has four stages of manifestation. Late diagnosis has been one of the greatest problems marring the treatment of this infection. Mesothelioma has no known cure and palliative care aims to manage some of the symptoms. The disease has a long latency period of twenty to fifty years; hence most of the diagnosed are well over fifty years of age.

600 victims filed lawsuits against 6,000 defendants

The amount of lawsuit against firms seems to be on a merry ride as this number has continued to sower without abating. In the history of the United States of America, law suits seems to be the longest running with over six hundred victims filling lawsuit against six thousand defendants for being the cause of their illness.

There is now a public awareness encouraging everyone who has been diagnosed of mesothelioma to seek legal counsel where it will be determined if they can chase a law suit or not against their employers. Also, the act makes it possible for anyone who has lost a loved one through mesothelioma exposure to file a law suit against the employers of their loved one.

The bill may infringe the right of injured people

Those who support the bill claims that it will allow corporations to now identify the people they are paying claims to. It will also help to fish out those collecting multiple claims from different asbestos trust funds. However, Public Citizens, a consumer watchdog has warned that companies may use the process they have been provided to delay genuine payment of claims.

There is also the argument that the companies, knowing that these victims are living on a low life expectancy, may decide to tender a request that would prevent them from paying any claims at all.

Public Citizen also pointed out clearly that the bill is an infringement on the lives of asbestos victims because they public personal information to the public while taking their medical history. Such information as employment history, addresses, names, and the amount of compensation and so on will now be mandatory for the patient to provide.

Medication Procedures to Treat Malignant Mesothelioma

It is always scary when one is diagnosed of cancer because the general notion about cancer is that it is deadly. However, there are two classifications of cancer- benign and malignant. The benign is the mild form of cancer and can be removed or treated with chemotherapy.

A malignant cancer is the dreaded one. They usually proliferate fast and if nothing is done to keep it in check, it quickly results to the death of the patient. Mesothelioma is a terminal cancer with no care in sight as of yet. Treatment of mesothelioma usually takes a palliative approach.

Palliative treatment – targeting symptoms and pain

Palliative treatment systematically targets the symptom and pain of cancer. There are a number of palliative treatments that can be employed to help victims of mesothelioma get relief from some of the associated discomfort that comes with the disease. They include chemotherapy, surgery, radiation or simply administering medications.

However, the choice of medication will depend on the stage of diagnosis of the disease. The target in palliative treatment is to reduce the discomfort and provide a general wellness. This type of treatment does not provide a cure but has the potential to extend the life of the patient.

Medications are available for chronic pain and relief

The medication your doctor would recommend would naturally depend on the severity of your symptoms. In the case of a mild symptom, the doctor can even recommend an over the counter prescription, for example ibuprofen.

Over the counter prescriptions are drugs with loose regulations and can be sold in any pharmacy store with or without prescription from a medical professional. These drugs can serve as palliative for aches and general discomfort.

There are other drugs that can provide relief for chronic pain and discomfort e.g. morphine but it is always good to work with prescription and inform your doctor of all your intentions to avoid running into complications.

Alternative therapies such as acupuncture are available

There are other therapies which can be tried at home and would provide relief from muscle aches. An example is a good massage which would also increase blood circulation in the tissue. For inflammations, acupuncture has been shown to be a source of relief.

There is another form of alternative treatment that focuses on the psychological aspect of pain and the need for behavioral modification to help the patient make the pain appear less painful. This has worked for many mesothelioma patients.

The future of mesothelioma patients is bleak

Like mentioned earlier, the fate of mesothelioma patients at the moment still seems to be bleak because there are no definitive drugs to cure the disease but with the evolution of medicine and the stunning discoveries about tumor, patients may have a reason to smile very soon.

Those who have had long exposure to asbestos should have regular scan for inflammations particularly at the chest cavity. Early detection is very instrumental to survival. When detected early, surgery can be used to dislodge the asbestos fiber from region, thereby giving the body a chance to heal itself.

The major problem with asbestos linked mesothelioma is that of wrong diagnosis. Initial symptoms always resemble those of regular lung infections; hence, patients get diagnosed when the damage has been done.
