The mind is powerful. According to Freud’s psychoanalytic theory of personality: “the subconscious mind is a reservoir of feelings, thoughts, urges, and memories that are outside of our conscious awareness’’. This is one of the topics we will be discussing and finding a way to improve our thoughts from past experiences in the chapter (how to renew the mind). Another interesting topic is differentiating the conscious and subconscious mind. The conscious mind, being the awareness at the present moment and the subconscious mind which is likened to an iceberg: it is like a huge memory bank. Its capacity is virtually unlimited, it permanently stores everything.

What is the Mind?


Different religions and cultures have different meanings of this term. The dictionary defines it as ‘‘the element of a person that enables them to be aware of the world and their experiences, to think, and to feel; the faculty of consciousness and thought’’. It also states ‘‘a person’s ability to think and reason, the intellect.’’


Some religious teachers view the mind and the brain as two separate things. The mind is ‘‘some entity with different and undefined physical character’’ and that is the part that we are going to be focusing on. In Christianity or Hebrew, they might refer to the mind as the heart, the inner man. They go on further to say there is nothing in the body that can specifically be identified as being our mind.

For example, sometimes when we are relaxed and seated, our mind tends to be very active, thinking and planning. This indicates that our body and mind are not the same entity.


There appears to be no single agreed-upon definition/explanation of what the mind really is. Everyone has his or her own definitions. Well I’m not here to give you a biology lesson, but, to help you understand how changing your mindset can change your life. We are going to look at the two parts of the mind most widely recognised by all people. After this, we will be able to understand further how our mind works and how we can improve our lives.







Subconscious Mind

The subconscious part of the mind cannot distinguish between real and imaginary experiences, and therefore accepts both as real. It works tirelessly attracting opportunities to make your reality match the images in your subconscious mind. Hence, all the greatest writers have come to one conclusion:

‘‘as a man thinketh, so is he’’.

You are what you think about. This is a harsh reality to accept because we start to look at what is happening in our lives and say, “I did not think about that!” However, we must realize that our lives do not only reflect our everyday thoughts, but also our shadow thoughts & beliefs that are buried deep in our subconscious mind. In other words, our lives attract what we think about and this is a law that works constantly without fail.

The upside to this however is, that we can reject bad thoughts and thus, start creating an abundant life. This is something that we will go on to explore further in the next chapters.

Conscious Mind

Your conscious mind is the objective or thinking part of your mind. It has no memory, and can only hold one thought at a time. It is continually sorting out impressions, deciding which are relevant to you and which are not. We will learn how we can improve our thinking later in this book. Just remember, you have the power to decide what you think about!







The power of the mind

The mind is powerful and it can change any circumstance in a person’s life. It has the power to uplift or downsize a person. Your mind is fertile, whatever you feed it, will germinate unless uprooted. The mind takes in what you watch, hear, read and speak. Imagine a seed you plant: when it is well watered and in good fertile ground, it will break forth and start to grow. It takes time to germinate. You will not see its full effect under the soil but the roots would have started to deepen. That’s the same with our mind,


‘’Whatever you take in your mind will harbor until it springs forth outwardly as habits or characters.’’


How you perceive it is how you receive it. There is a famous saying, “at some point in life you made an appointment to be here.” What it means is that where you find yourself today is not a coincidence. Your beliefs, thoughts and words have landed you where you are today. Even for you to be reading this book, something has led you here.


We ought to take responsibility for where we are. That way, it is easier to move forward and improve.

‘‘As a man thinketh so is he’’ What a powerful statement. My favorite book to read says ‘‘whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy (meditate)(think)(dream) about these things.’’ Philippians 4:8 (NKJV).

You cannot plant lemons and except to reap oranges or plant avocados expecting to see bananas. Your mind is like the richest soil you will ever find. The seeds in this illustration are the books you read, videos, movies, words you speak, TV programs, games and more. Whether pictures or words, the mind takes them in.


Only you can change your thoughts. If a habit or thought has been around for a long time, it will take day-to-day practice to eliminate that thought or habit.

We will learn how to change our thoughts later in the book. Remember, we are what we think about.



How to use the mind


We can use our minds in a variety of ways. Everyone has a different learning style therefore, we all use our minds differently. Since what we think about we bring about we can start to really enjoy life in abundance by simply changing our thoughts.


I will give a scenario that almost everyone has faced or will face at some point in life.

Imagine you are going to deliver a presentation to your company, church, university etc. There are two ways in which you can potentially approach the situation. You can either look at each presentation that you are due to deliver as a new presentation or, you can let your previous experiences determine how you are going to perform. This method will aim to work for both.


The first thing is to have complete faith that what I will deliver is going to be the best of me to date.

p))<>{color:#000;}. Go deep into detail (it is easier to keep an image in your head if there is a lot of movement). See your outfit, smell the perfume you will be wearing. Do your best to create a similar environment in your mind using all your five senses

(Remember your subconscious mind thinks it’s happening at that present moment, so, when you do it in real life, the confidence will follow because your mind will recognize it as something it has already mastered).

You can use this process with any situation; I call it, “mentally creating my perfect tomorrow.” This method can also change negative habits and build new, positive habits and skills. Remember, we have power to channel our thoughts on positive things. Identify that which needs improving and go ahead and change.


If you have ever had negative experiences in the past, you must deal with them first before you can fully change your mindset. You need to sit down in a quiet place and replay the situation while altering it to reflect how you would have wanted it to happen.

I believe you can change; I have faith because it has worked for me and many other great writers of the mind.







Thoughts on relationships


Just as we need to think and feel good, our relationships require the same affection. You cannot expect good healthy relationships when all you are filled with is jealousy, envy, or hatred. What we see and expect relationships to be is what they turn out to be. They turn out that way because we have put all our focus and energy on that thought. For every cause, there is a definite effect, ‘’if you do not want to see it in your future do not be speaking about it today’’. Forgive and forget, believe you deserve good relationships and see yourself having good relationships.






Thoughts on Health


Allow yourself to feel healthy, and through faith, see yourself feeling good.

As you think those negative thoughts about the week ahead that hasn’t happened yet; or that person who hasn’t said or done anything yet; even when the very thing you are thinking of is not there, your mind will begin to create that very situation that you are thinking of. The negative thinking changes your brain into a negative state and throws your mind and body into stress mode.

The bible says ‘Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”

Mathew 6:24 NKJV

Thoughts on dreams


Success is not built upon chance or luck, success is not determined outside of you; success is created within you.

There is an old African proverb that says ‘’if there is no enemy within the enemy outside can do us no harm’’.

First, win within yourself then win on the outside, not the other way around. The outside cannot change the inside, therefore, if you have dreams that you are chasing, believe within that you can make it. Visualize yourself having already achieved that dream no matter how crazy it may sound or appear. If your dreams offend someone, so what? dream even BIGGER!

Remember, apart from faith, you must get up and do what you believe you can do.

My favorite book to read says ‘’Faith without works is dead’’ James 2: 14-26 NKJV

Thoughts on day-to-day


You create your environment not the situation you are in. Therefore, if you can create it, you can take it away. You are the creator of your everything. What we hold predominantly in our subconscious mind is what we see and what shapes our reality.

Begin your day by telling the day how you would want it to treat you. Command your morning!

Set out how you want your day to go and the day will gladly give you that.









Thoughts on character


Character is a complete sum of who you truly are.

It is defined as ‘’the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual.”

Situations cannot control you; it is your psychological reaction to the situation that causes the feelings.

Abraham Lincoln says ‘’Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.”


Character chooses to reveal itself when man is under pressure or given power and wealth.


Remember, be careful of your thoughts, for your thoughts become your words. Be careful of your words, for your words become your actions. Be careful of your actions, for your actions become your habits. Be careful of your habits, for your habits become your CHARACTER. Be careful of your CHARACTER, for your CHARACTER becomes your destiny.

The great thing about all these things we have talked about, is that, your circumstances are not permanent unless YOU permit them to be.


You can change any circumstance; you can improve your character and live a better life. In the next chapter, we will look at how we can change for the better and I will also talk about how I fought through to be where I am today.








How to renew your mind


I remember a time when I needed to gain confidence and have faith that I could be somebody special. I had gone through somewhat 3 years of unfruitfulness in every area of my life. I even finished University with a low mark, fragile relationships, my walk with God was nonexistent and to top it off, I had no money and no job. I found myself thinking of the past mistakes I had made, the people I had hurt, the temporary decisions that left permanent damage, the business ideas that fell through the ground and all the money I had lost. The prospects of being successful were far from sight. I became too afraid to even try.


Even from the time I decided to change (which is key) I was still filled with images and words from past experiences.

I realized along the path, in order to change, I had to somehow be transformed by the renewing of my mind. This was because, if what I was holding onto then had come through negative experiences, I could begin to create positive images through new experiences. I realized I could eliminate bad thought patterns with patience and persistent practice.


I began to read my favorite book, the Holy Bible and I listened to countless motivational speakers everyday without fail. On my way to work on the train; walking to work from the train; on my break at work and even when I got home. I ate, breathed and socked myself with positive reads and videos. My favorite motivational speaker has always been Les Brown. I surrounded myself with friends that spoke the same language. I stopped watching TV, stopped using social media and stopped going out with friends. I totally isolated myself and it worked. I am not advising you to be as extreme as I was, but, if you can, then go ahead.

What I heard began to be a part of me; it sprouted quickly in my mind and became my character. I had new dreams, new innovations. I opened a company Bentley Francis Designs and it was in the same year that I met my beautiful wife. I got a beautiful job and bought a car. I achieved more in less time than I would have ever achieved had I not renewed my mind.


It took persistent action with patience. Les Brown says ‘’we must be patient and engage in persistent action’’ which I think is a powerful way to start any change. We ought to keep going; giving up is more painful.


If my mind can change so can yours. It was hard for me to see good in myself. It was hard to believe that I could be writing a book one day but here I am and here you are, reading it. I hope this story inspires you to decide to start.

I have many other experiences that I will share in my second edition. I have topics as to how I overcame pornography, masturbation and bad thought patterns through the battle in my mind.

I will be discussing how I got to where I am today in my marriage, businesses, family and other important relationships I made through right thinking.


For now, let us discuss the process the mind goes through during the process of change. This will help when trying to win the battle in your mind effectively. After all, the enemy you know is better than the one you don’t know. Knowing this process allows you to figure out a way to keep up the good fight of faith.






The process the mind goes through

Before we get started on the 30-day transformation challenge, let’s take a look at some of the challenges you might face along the way.



The mind will reject what you are telling it because the information is new. It is not used to being told you can do it, you can get over that relationship, you can find peace again, so, it is like learning a different language.



This is the time when you ask yourself: is this working? I don’t see any change. My spiritual life is at a stand still. My habits are not changing, my income is still the same and my business seems to be standing still.


Trust the work you are putting in, something is happening it takes time just like a seed that is planted takes time to take roots.




This frustration comes from doing something you repeatedly said you wouldn’t or forgetting to do something. I’m here to tell you that it is okay, be patient with yourself, be kind to yourself, give yourself time and a million chances. You deserve a million chances.
















I have put together affirmations that you can start with before you create your own according to your goals and aspirations.

These are 30 days lasting giving you the best transformation. Let’s call it, “renewing our minds through directed thought practice.”

Use them every morning to experience a day filled with abundance. Use them during the day, in the morning and before you sleep also in conjunction with other motivational speakers.

We have free choice to learn, this means that we also have free choice to unlearn our thoughts, behaviors and characters that we do not like.

We have free choice to become proactive and conscious thinkers.
