[][][][][][][] In the Jungle

A pelican, a sheep and a brown bear were the best of friends. They were from the start, from the moment they met, at a beach on vacation off the coast of France.

But as all vacations do, their week by the beach ended. Each of the new friends had to return once again, to the home that they come from.

The sheep had to return to her home at the farm.

Brown Bear had to return to the forest.

And Pelican, well Pelican would stay since she lived at the beach, but life would be different now to say the least.

They promised to keep in touch by mail. And they did, as they said when they each got home. They mailed off two letters to the other’s homes.

The Pelican laughed when she read how the pigs, got into the chicken coup where Sheep lives.

Bear found it funny that Pelican stayed at the beach on vacation, where he had stayed.

Sheep liked to hear how Brown Bear had plans to sleep through the winter until it got warm. If it wasn’t that he had been born, in wintry climate with all this snow, Bear said that the wintry woods would not be his home.

It was the last letter that had caused such a stir. Sheep kept thinking of all the snow, brrrr. She wrote to the others: What if instead of Brown Bear feeling cold, we took a vacation to somewhere warm? We could go to a place that none of us have ever been. The Amazon Jungle is just the thing!

And that’s how it happened in winter that year, a sheep, a pelican, and a bear, all hopped on a plane to Brazil. To spend the cold winter, warm in the trees, and see how many other friends they could meet.

They hitched a ride on a jeep, right from the airport. Hippo was driving and leading the tour.

None of them had met a hippo before. And a hippo who drives, well that’s even better. Now it was time to enjoy this Amazon weather!

It was sunny today, and clear, clear, clear skies. So Hippo offered to take them for a ride. “I’ll show you around the jungle for a bit. I’ll show you around so you all can just sit back and relax and enjoy the show, there are so many places to go.”

So they drove until they came across monkey.

Monkey was happily swinging from trees, eating bananas, as many as he pleased. “Hello Monkey,” they said as they passed, and snapped a picture, without using flash.

They continued the drive, and to Pelican’s delight, a bird with the most beautiful colors took flight! “Who’s that?” Pelican said, pointing to the bird in the air.

“Well that’s Mr. Toucan, he lives over here.” Hippo offered to introduce us, but Toucan was in a hurry, he had plans to meet his mother for lunch at three, and it was already three-thirty. So we waved to Mr. Toucan, and wished him a good lunch. Then we continued our drive like a happy bunch.

We drove through the Amazon Jungle, until we stumbled upon, a lizard in the middle of the road.

Thank goodness Hippo saw him or he would have drove right over the little iguana that had caught a patch of sun, and thought it would be fun, to sunbathe for a while.

Hippo pulled over, and pointed him out, and said little Iguana, you better get out of the way, or you could get hit. But the stubborn little Iguana, just wanted to sit. He barely looked up, which made Hippo quite mad.

Bear, Sheep and Pelican, seeing the dilemma waved at Iguana, and let him know. “We are on a vacation together you know! None of us have ever been on vacation in a jungle in the Amazon. And you are the first iguana we have ever seen. Pleased to meet you! I like your color green!”

The Iguana felt happy, that someone could see, his green scaly back was really quite a dream. So he nodded his head and let them pass by, when a Zebra came over and said “Hi!”

“What wonderful stripes you have!” said Bear. “Did you paint them like that?” He asked most sincerely. The Zebra just laughed, not really believing, that Bear wouldn’t’ know that a Zebra had stripes. But Bear didn’t’ know, since he had never been, to the Amazon Jungle, and seen such a thing.

They continued the drive through the jungle admiring, all of the green, and the flowers around them. All of a sudden the sounds of the jungle seemed to hum a little more quietly, and Hippo got a look, a look almost frightening. “Did I mention that the jungle quiets a little down, whenever a Tiger is around?”

That’s when they saw him, up in a tree. He had stripes too, but Bear didn’t’ see them. All he noticed was his sharp, sharp, sharp, teeth, so he kept quiet.

But Sheep like to talk and to make new friends, so she said “Over here nice Tiger friend!” She waved and took a picture, and waved again. The Tiger almost fell over from surprise, or maybe he’d never seen a Sheep say hi.

Hippo sped up the jeep, and they continued to drive along, until they came to a Giraffe, with a long, long, long neck.

Being a friendly bunch they of course wanted to say hello, but giraffe was so tall that he did not see them below.

Everyone in the jeep agreed, if Pelican flew up to greet Giraffe, then they would have met yet another new friend, and that’s all that matters in the end.

So Pelican flew up, and got Giraffe’s attention, and then Bear and Sheep, told him about their vacation. Giraffe couldn’t help but smile at his new friends, Hippo, Sheep, Bear, and Pelican. Pelican flew back down, and with a wave, they continued their safari the Amazon way.

When to their ears they heard a sound. A trumpet noise all around. “That is Elephant of this I’m sure,” Hippo announced to the tour.

Elephant was drinking by a stream through the longest snout they had ever seen.

Pelican of course took a picture; an elephant truly was a beautiful creature.

It was beginning to get dark, and Hippo thought it could rain, when their Jeep pulled out onto a plain. There under a tree, alone taking a nap was the King of the Jungle on his back.

“That is Lion.” The Hippo whispered, to the crew, but just like before Sheep got all excited, and screamed out “Over here nice Lion!”

The Lion’s head snapped up to attention, at Hippo, Sheep, Pelican and Bear in a jeep. The Hippo revved the engine, but to everyone’s surprise the Lion smiled and said “Hi guys!”

That was the end of the tour but it was only day one. All the friends in the jungle planned to have fun.

When it was time to go home, they promised to keep in touch through the mail, like they did before. They included dear Hippo in the address exchange, and each and every animal they had met on their way.

They did keep their promise too, these friends, they wrote to each other every week, until the summer when Sheep came up with another idea.

“Let’s go to the desert! I have never been, and let’s invite our Amazon friends!”
