10. ABOUT US

1. HELLO

You’ve returned from a transformational experience abroad and you’re itching to jump on the next international flight! We know the feeling. But first, we encourage you to take a step back and reflect on your experiences abroad.

Is travel really the next best step? If so, what exactly is the best option? If not, how can you remain global in your home country?

2. START HERE

We want you to be intentional about your next step and this guide will help you do just that.

First, you’ll put words to how you feel.

Next, you’ll determine what you want your life to be like.

Then, you’ll figure out how to move towards that vision.

Finally, you’ll create a plan of action.

Let’s get started!

3. PUTTING WORDS TO HOW YOU FEEL

The first step? Articulate how you feel. Write down 5 words that best describe how you feel about your life right now. (You can also look at this list of emotion words.) Don’t overthink it! Choose the first words that come to your mind or stand out to you on the linked list of emotion words, even if you’re not exactly sure why.

1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

Now, let’s dig a little deeper. Why did you chose each word? What’s making you feel that way? Jot down your thoughts below.

3.

4.

5.

Now choose five words that represent how you want to feel in whatever you do next (click here to refer back to the list of emotion words).

2.

3.

4.

5.

Why did these words speak to you? How different are these emotions from how you’re feeling now?

We asked you to think about how you’re feeling because our emotions often drive us to make less than intentional decisions! Being aware of how you’re feeling and what’s at the root of those feelings are key to making an informed decision about your next adventure and creating a satisfying global life.

4. KNOW WHERE YOU WANT TO GO

Imagine it’s five years from now. What do you want your life to be like? Describe the different areas of your life in as much detail as possible.

In five years, I will be ____ years old.

5. MOVING FORWARD

The next five years will fly by! We don’t want you to look back and wonder if how you spent your time was really worth it or that you missed out on something because you jumped into your next adventure – at home or abroad – before thinking it through. By figuring out what (and who) is important to you, you’ll be be more intentional about creating the life you truly want. In the end, we believe that intentional steps will lead to long term happiness.

Unfortunately, you can’t recreate your original experience abroad (trust us, we’ve tried!). But the good news is, you can find another fulfilling opportunity at home or abroad. You just have to figure out what fulfilling means to you! The following questions will help you reflect on and articulate the best option for you.

Now that you have a vision for your future five years from now, let’s focus on the coming year. Here are 5 questions to reflect on.

1. What do you hope to accomplish in the next year? And why?

Ex. I want to become fluent in Spanish and learn about new cultures. I want to get hired as a Social Media Strategist for a global company. I want to learn to budget so I can pay off my student loans and save money to take an international trip with my sister. I also want to learn to cook, become a certified yoga instructor, and have a pet.

You might be leaning towards achieving these goals only at home or only abroad, but let’s make sure you see all the options out there—because options are everywhere!

2. How can you achieve your goals at home?

Ex: I can find a Spanish tutor or language partner. I can be a couchsurfing host to meet people from all over the world. I can find a social media job at a local company or online. I can take an online class about budgeting. I can find a roommate so I can save money. I can attend a local cultural event with my sister as we plan our trip abroad. I can cook an international meal once a week, participate in yoga certification class, and get a pet or volunteer at a local animal shelter.

3. How can you can achieve these goals abroad?

Ex. I can move to a Spanish speaking country. I can find a location independent social media position or start my own business. I can choose to travel to destinations based on the local cost of living so that I can still make my student loan payments. I can invite my sister to visit me while I’m living/traveling abroad. I can take a local cooking class, attend a yoga certification retreat abroad, and be a pet-sitter.

4. Are there some things that you can only achieve at home or abroad? What are the tradeoffs of achieving your goals at home or abroad?

Ex: Having my own pet would require me to have at home, but I could still be around animals while abroad through volunteering or pet-sitting. My relationship with my sister at home could include more frequent in-person visits, but if I lived abroad it might be limited to monthly Skype calls. It would be easier for me to get a well-paying career in social media at home (which would help me achieve my financial goals quicker), but I could freelance and choose my experiences abroad based on a strict budget.

5. Unfortunately, you may not be able to have everything you want in your life at the same time, so which thing(s) are the most important to you in the coming year? Pick 1 – 3 goals for the coming year.

Ex: Get a social media job, pay off my student loans, and spend quality time with my sister.

Goal 1:

Goal 2:

Goal 3:

Now that you’ve set your goals, let’s explore how you can achieve them abroad or at home.

If you think the best way for you to achieve your goals is to explore options abroad, go to #6: SO YOU’RE THINKING ABOUT GOING ABROAD.

If you think the best way for you to achieve your goals is to explore options at home, go to #7: SO YOU’RE THINKING ABOUT STAYING HOME (FOR NOW!).

6. SO YOU’RE THINKING ABOUT GOING ABROAD

How exciting! First, take (a lot of) time to think about and answer the following questions honestly to ensure that you set yourself up for success.

*
p<>{color:#000;}. What is it about being abroad that excites you?

*
p<>{color:#000;}. What did you like and dislike about your previous experience(s) abroad (e.g., housing, cost of living, job, homesickness, ease of meeting people, culture/language, etc.)?

*
p<>{color:#000;}. What do you expect to get out of your next adventure abroad?

How would you feel if it didn’t live up to your expectations?

*
p<>{color:#000;}. What will you have to do for your next adventure abroad that you didn’t have to do before (e.g., arrange my own housing, speaking the local language on a daily basis, etc.)? How will you manage this?

*
p<>{color:#000;}. If you struggled with homesickness before, how will you maintain relationships at home while abroad?

*
p<>{color:#000;}. Which city/country do you want to go to and where don’t you want to go? What’s drawing you to that location? Could you get what you’re looking for in another location?

7. SO YOU’RE THINKING ABOUT STAYING IN YOUR HOME COUNTRY (FOR NOW!)

Awesome! First, take (a lot of) time to think and answer the following questions honestly to ensure that you set yourself up for success.

*
p<>{color:#000;}. What excites you about staying in your home country? What makes you apprehensive about being home?

*
p<>{color:#000;}. What did you like and dislike about your previous experience(s) abroad (e.g., new adventures, trying new foods, freedom, independence, homesickness, missing out on important events and milestones, etc.)?

*
p<>{color:#000;}. What will you miss from abroad? How can you incorporate your favorite aspects of being abroad into your life at home?

*
p<>{color:#000;}. In your own words, what does a ‘global life at home’ look like?

*
p<>{color:#000;}. What can you do to make your life at home more global (e.g., join a language club, cook international food, watch international films/TV, etc.)?

*
p<>{color:#000;}. How can you incorporate travel in your life at home?

Now that you’ve thought about your next adventure, it’s time to take action!

8. PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER AND TAKING ACTION

How would you complete this sentence?

After reflecting…….I want my next adventure to be ___________ in ___________ because ________________.

Ex. I want my next adventure to be (your dream adventure) in (location) because (how does this help you realise your vision for your life five years from now).

Reflection Questions:

*
p<>{color:#000;}. What do you want to achieve with this adventure (e.g., job skills, language skills, confidence, cross things off your bucket list, be with a significant other, etc.)?

*
p<>{color:#000;}. How does this adventure get you closer to want your life to look like five years from now?

*
p<>{color:#000;}. How likely is this adventure going to make you feel how you said you want to feel in the coming year?

I will do these three things to make this next adventure successful for me:

1.

2.

3.

Something I can do right now to get closer to next adventure is: ________________

Ex: Something I can do right now to get closer to next adventure is: [research French cooking classes in my city] or [research places to live in Tokyo].

Here’s what I’m excited about…

Here are some concerns I have…

Here’s where I can find support…
