Chapter 1: What is Hard Water?

 

Hard water may not sound as scary as iron damage, or as menacing as arsenic. But your hair, skin, plumbing, and appliances may not agree with that assessment. In fact, almost anything that uses water on a regular basis can suffer from the effects of hard water. Hard water can be an all too common irritation for well-water owners.

 

Now, let’s break down what it means for water to be considered “hard” as opposed to “soft.” For water to be considered hard, it must have a high volume of “hard” minerals, including calcium and magnesium. The level of hardness is measured in grains per gallon (gpg) or milligrams per liter (mg/L). Water that reads between 0-1 gpg is considered soft; moderately hard water reads at 3.5-7 gpg; and any water with over 7 gpg is classified as hard to very hard. Unfortunately, only about 15 percent of the water in the United States falls into that soft category, according to the 2010 U.S. Geological Survey.

 

Simply put, hard water is water that contains higher-than-average mineral content. What this average rating may read depends heavily on your area, but generally refers to water with between 120-180 parts per million (ppm) of dissolved minerals such as iron, calcium, manganese, or others. Typical freshwater can range between 15 and 385 ppm, but anything over 180 ppm is considered very hard.

 

Geography has a lot to do with it. Since water accrues its hardness by passing through mineral deposits and sediment present in soil. The properties of your local water generally depend on the properties of the landscape around you. For example, mountain towns tend to be known for their high iron or limestone content. Infrastructure can also impact the mineral content and overall hardness of water by the time it reaches your faucets. For example, aging pipes and municipal water systems can leach iron or magnesium into water as it travels through the system.

 

There are a few easy ways to tell if your water is hard, and while you’ll probably need an expert water test to determine the extent, signs that things may be harder than normal can be relatively simple to spot, such as:

Chapter 2: Problems Caused by Hard Water.

 

Hard water contains high levels of minerals, specifically magnesium and calcium. As mentioned earlier, the hardness of your water depends on where you live, because each region will have different levels of hard water depending on its source and treatment.

 

Problems Specific to Pipes, Appliances, Surfaces & Laundry:

 

Untreated hard water can lead to a variety of problems in your home or office. These include:

Although hard water is not harmful to your health overall, it can have a huge effect on your hair, skin and nails.

The minerals present in hard water can make it difficult to achieve a thorough rinse, leaving behind residue and causing buildup in your hair. Hard water can leave your hair feeling filmy, straw-like, dull and limp, and your scalp feeling dry and itchy. You could wash your hair several times a day thinking it will fix the problem, but each time you leave the shower you will experience the same result. The problem is coming from your water, not your rinse-lather-repeat routine.

 

Another effect you may be noticing is in your hair color. Hard water can cause color-treated hair to wash out very quickly, leading to more frequent color treatments, and further damaging your hair. You may also notice your hair becoming thinner and prone to breakage – this can be attributed to hard water as well.

The most common effect of hard water on your skin is dryness. Much like with your hair, hard water makes it difficult to rinse away soap from the surface of your skin, leaving your skin dry and potentially irritated – this effect is made worse if you also have sensitive skin, psoriasis, or eczema. When hard water comes in contact with your skin, some of those minerals that cause the hard water, get left behind, absorbing a lot of the natural moisture and oils from your skin.

Hard water is also unfriendly to nails and nail beds. Nail discoloration is a common symptom, along with weak and thin fingernail and toenail structures. Continuous exposure to hard water can hinder nail growth as well.

 

 

 

What can you do to solve these problems?

 

These irksome issues luckily have a very tried-and-true solution: water softening by Culligan. Culligan’s water softener was first envisioned in 1936 when Emmett Culligan, the namesake of the worldwide water treatment brand, needed to safely wash his newborn’s cloth diapers. Necessity was the mother (or in this case, the father) of invention, and as a result, an entire industry was born, devoted to treating problem water.

Chapter 3: How It Works: The Home Water Softener

 

Water is softened when a “soft” mineral like sodium replaces the calcium and magnesium in the water. The process is called “ion exchange.” This exchange is facilitated by resin and zeolite in the mineral tank of the softener, which attracts the calcium and magnesium as the water passes through. The sodium ions then replace those hard minerals thanks to a brine solution. The result is soft water.

 

Hard water contains a high concentration of the minerals calcium and magnesium, which can manifest in discernable problems throughout your home, including stiff laundry, reduced appliance efficiency, difficulty rinsing soaps and detergents, dry skin and dull and lifeless hair.

 

To soften the hard water, resin beads within the home water softener system filter out the above-mentioned minerals from the water. As hard water enters your home, it flows through the water softener, and the resin within the system filters out hard water minerals, removing them from the water. The softened water then leaves the water softening system to flow through the plumbing all around your home.

 

To keep the system performing consistently, allowing your water softener to continually remove hardness and provide softened water throughout your home, the system needs to be regularly flushed free of the minerals left behind during the softening cycle – a process called regeneration.

 

During a regeneration cleaning cycle, a brine solution is used to clean the resin tank, exchanging sodium for hard water minerals. The brine and hard water minerals are then flushed from the tank, leaving the resin beads within the water softening system refreshed, and ready to continue eliminating hard water from your home.
