[] Chapter 1 – Understanding Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile Dysfunction (ED) also known as impotence is a sexual dysfunction wherein the man is unable to get and retain an erection that is hard enough for sexual intercourse. Most men experience occasional Erectile Dysfunction especially when stressed, too tired or under medication. But, frequent Erectile Dysfunction needs to be treated as it can be a sign of an underlying health problem or emotional difficulties.

In the United States, Erectile Dysfunction affects up to 30 million men. According to the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), ED affects 4% of men in their 50’s and about 17% of men in their 60’s. Men aged 75 years old and above have higher risks of experiencing ED. In fact, about half of the men on this age will suffer from Erectile Dysfunction.

Although statistics show that the risk of ED is higher with age, it does not necessarily mean that it is an inevitable consequence of aging. Erection may be more difficult to achieve as you age but it does not indicate that you will develop Erectile Dysfunction. The healthier you are, the better is your sexual function.

Erectile Dysfunction is different from poor libido and ejaculation issues. To be specific, ED refers to the issues of achieving erection and maintaining an erection. In some cases, a man can have healthy libido but is unable to maintain an erection to make sexual intercourse possible.

An erection is achieved when blood fills the sponge-like bodies within the two chambers of the penis known as corpora cavernosa. This causes the penis to enlarge and become hard. This is triggered by sexual arousal when the impulses from the brain are transmitted to the nerves of the penis. When these impulses are blocked or blood flow to the penis is prevented, erectile dysfunction can happen.

Prolonged drug abuse suppresses the central nervous system and causes serious damage to blood vessels that can lead to Erectile Dysfunction. According to a study conducted by Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital –Urology, Taiwan, male drug abusers are more prone to ED, especially those who are using heroine.

According to experts, depression, stress, performance anxiety and poor self-esteem can prevent the process that causes erection. These factors aggravate the problem in men whose Erectile Dysfunction is caused by something physical.

Some men believe that drinking alcohol helps stimulate sex. On the contrary, heavy drinking can decrease the time of your erection, as it is a depressant. To prevent this, limit your alcohol consumption to one to two glasses only. Smoking, on the other hand, causes plaque buildup in the vessels causing circulatory problems such as ED.

If you are under medication and you are having issues achieving or maintaining an erection, consult your doctor. Simple lifestyle changes can help improve Erectile Dysfunction. For men requiring intensive treatment, lifestyle changes, along with other treatments can help make the treatment more effective, efficient and faster.

Stop Smoking

No single technique to quit smoking works for everyone. However, you can start by staying away from places where you usually smoke. Set a date, throw away all your cigarettes, stay away from smoking areas and keep yourself busy. You can also talk to your doctor about nicotine replacement therapy or non-nicotine prescription.

Do not make it too hard for yourself. Take it slowly, one day at a time. Cravings are usual but they will go away eventually. You can also get help by choosing to join a smoking cessation program that uses various techniques.

To make it easier, involve your family and friends. Ask them to help you keep busy and remind you whenever you are tempted to have another stick. Encouragements from friends and family help a lot in building your confidence and motivating you to move forward.

Limit Your Alcohol Intake

Nitric oxide is a chemical responsible for producing erection and maintaining it. The release of this chemical is controlled by the central nervous system. Alcohol is a known depressant. When you drink too much alcohol, it depresses the central nervous system, affecting its functionality and efficiency. When this happens, it affects the release of nitric oxide, causing Erectile Dysfunction.

There are times when drinking is inevitable, especially when you need to socialize for work or projects. Limit your alcohol intake to one to two glasses, and drink only when there are important occasions. If you suffer from alcohol addiction, you can start by drinking fresh fruit juice for ten 10 days whenever your cravings start. Pineapple juice, apple juice, orange juice, carrot juice and bitter gourd juice are highly recommended. You can also join alcohol rehabilitation programs to help you quit drinking alcohol faster.

If possible, keep distance from friends and co-workers who drink a lot. If you need to attend a social gathering, have your partner call you from time to time to remind you not to take a sip. It is going to be hard, but with the help of your loved ones, it will be a lot easier.

Exercise

When you exercise, your blood flow and blood pressure improves, increasing the levels of nitric oxide in your blood vessels. Exercise also helps boost production of testosterone naturally, an important factor for sex drive and erectile strength. Start with light exercises for a few minutes. Increase your exercise time as you go along and upgrade your exercise routine. To reap its maximum benefits, exercise for at least 20 to 30 minutes every day.

Choose an exercise routine that boosts blood flow and strengthens the pelvis and abdomen area. Walking, running and weight-bearing exercises are recommended.

Eat Healthy

What you eat directly affects Erectile Dysfunction. Choose a diet rich in whole grains, fruits vegetables and fish. As much as possible decrease your consumption of red meat and stay away from refined grains.  It is important to maintain a healthy weight as studies show that men with 42-inch waist are at 50% higher risk of developing ED compared to men with 32-inch waist. Furthermore, obesity is linked to diabetes and vascular disease, which both contribute to Erectile Dysfunction.

To fight impotence, you should eat foods that are rich in Vitamin E such as green leafy vegetables and wheatgerm. Vitamin E improves blood flow which is essential for achieving erection.

Zinc enhances testosterone levels. Foods rich in zinc include sunflower seeds, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, spinach, beef and lamb among others. Brazil nuts contain high amounts of selenium which also boosts testosterone levels. For increased libido, eat some sesame seeds and watercress every day.

Follow a Sleeping Schedule

Sleep loss affects testosterone levels in men. Low levels of sex hormones are linked to sexual dysfunctions. The body adheres to its internal clock to determine when to release certain hormones. Consistent sleeping patterns ensure that your body gets a clear and consistent signal, making hormone secretions more efficient.

Monitor Your Medications

If you are taking medications for high blood pressure, heart conditions, antidepressants, anti-psychotic, beta-blockers, diuretics, chemotherapy, corticortisoids, hormone drugs, cholesterol medications or male pattern baldness and suspect having ED consult your doctor. These medications can cause Erectile Dysfunction and continued use can lead to permanent ED.

These yoga poses treat and prevent ED:

Before you start with yoga, you have to warm up and stretch. Walk for 15 minutes. Gently move your arms in a circular motion, 8 times. Bend sideways, 8 times. Bend each of your knees, 8 times. These warm up exercises will prepare your muscles and wake up your quads for your Yoga poses.

This yoga pose strengthens your back, core abs and legs. It also boosts blood flow on the pelvic area, which is essential for the treatment of ED.

Adjust your hips so they are lifted high. Hold this position for 10 seconds and breathe normally. Switch your arm positions and hold the pose for another 10 seconds. This yoga pose tones the entire body and strengthens the male uro-genital system.

Tilt your head to the right and stretch your right hand to the side. Inhale, exhale, and old this position for 10 seconds then switch to the other knee. This pose promotes overall uro-genital health in males, and releases the tension on the pelvic area, boosting blood flow and improves blood pressure.

Bend your back as if you are picking something on the floor.  Hold the tip of your toes with your hands.  Inhale, exhale. Hold this position for 10 seconds. Stand straight and breathe. Repeat this yoga position 10 times every day.  This yoga position is very effective in treating Erectile Dysfunction as it improves blood circulation to the pelvic area and improves uro-genital efficiency.

Since you are a beginner, you will feel uncomfortable on your first few days. This will pass as you go along. Do not start without stretching or warming up as this will cause muscle aches and pain that can discourage you from continuing.

Start with the easiest Yoga pose. When you are comfortable with it, try the harder Yoga poses. While you are at it, follow a diet rich in zinc, selenium and Vitamin as they help increase nitric oxide levels in the body.

Korean Ginseng (Red Ginseng) is a known sexual stimulant as it increases sexual libido. Dried Ginseng Root Tea

Blend 1

20 drops Basil

15 drops Clary Sage

1 drop Clove

1oz Jojoba Oil or Coconut Oil

Mix all essential oils in a glass bottle. You can apply it directly on your genitals and massage some on your pelvic area. You can also add this blend to your bath.

Blend 2

30 drops Clary Sage

30 drops Fennel

20 drops Sage

10 drops Yarrow

5 drops Peppermint

Mix oils thoroughly. For massage or direct application, add 1 oz Jojoba Oil, Sesame Seed Oil or Coconut Oil. You can also use this blend on your diffuser, preferably an hour or 3 minutes before making love. You can also add this blend on your warm bath. Mix oils in 1 tablespoon honey and stir in your warm bath water.

Blend 3

30 drops Geranium

30 drops Rosewood

15 drops Ylang Ylang

10 drops Myrrh

10 drops Black Pepper

Mix the oils in 1 oz Jojoba Oil and use it to massage your front and back pelvic area. You can also apply it on your genitals. You can also add this blend in your warm bath.

Blend 4
