Emailing Your Way to Freedom from the 9 to 5

WHO’S ZACH?

Zach Miller

Sales Funnel Consultant

To know me, you have to start from the beginning. And let’s face it – that’s why you’re even reading this part – to get to know the personal, the open, the real – ME. Well, my life began in ‘89, but my story about email & internet marketing began in ’01.

Toledo Christian, you can even look me up in the year book. That year, I had a teacher name Mr. Killes. He was kind of quirky. His teaching method: Everyone is an idiot and that’s perfect. A clean slate to learn the ONE and ONLY method you need to succeed. I laughed when it popped up on the projector screen.

But contrary to my laughing, in less than 60 days (and only 35 mins each day), he taught a class of 32 kids how to expertly take apart and build any computer, motherboard, how to solder wires – you name it. How did we ALL (not 1 person failed) learn so perfectly?

Well, on the 1st day, Mr. Killes told me, if you read 100 manuals, you have 100 ways to build the same thing. Some manuals tell you to start from the top, and others from the bottom. Either is right, you only  get into trouble when you look at another manual. You soon become confused and begin to wonder if you are doing it right. And he was right! What did I learn through all this? [* IF YOU JUST FOLLOW ONE PERSON’S INSTRUCTIONS 100% - YOU’LL SUCCEED EXACTLY LIKE THEY DID. *]

His other nack? Mr. Killes always talked about Internet Marketing (IM) and how he could quit his teaching position any day, I never believed him. I don’t think anyone really did. Now Mr. Killes did some very crazy things with computers that I still cannot believe to this day. And this is even taking into account the new developments in this day and age with holograms, self-driving cars & (cross fingers) some teleportation if the government deems the public so lucky. And every day Mr. Killes would evangelize about IM.

Who’s going to believe that an under-paid teacher, holed up in a small forgotten school, in Ohio, is rich? Well, that is until I saw his bank account one day. It was just for a moment, amongst the dozen other tabs and windows open, but it was clear as day. A BoA statement with just over 200K in it, which today is like your kid’s teacher accidentally opening their bank account on the projector and you see closer to half a million dollars in it! Yeah, crazy, right? So, I picked up my gaping jaw, and I took ONE THING from him that year – Internet Marketing is where the money is at!

It was just a couple years later I started with reading Internet Marketing’s Insider Secrets by Corey Rudl (R.I.P.) in college, I spent $2.500 on that course. It was every single dollar I ever made as a kid. I literally was betting everything on what Mr. Killes told me in our 6th period  computer lab, the final day I said goodbye to him. He pulled me aside and prepped me for college. The words burned in my mind like a scar. If you want to be smart broke, be an engineer, if you want to be dumb rich, be an internet marketer.

I never got the smart/dumb part. Always thought you had to be smart to be in IM – HAHAHA!!!

So Corey Rudl sent off his course – which blew my mind away. It was 2 binders, about 3 ½” to 4” thick.. EACH! Round 1,000+ pages of information in all - it was literally everything you needed to know about anything internet marketing back then.. crazy, right? I absorbed it all in 1 month. I read it all, got so fired up, decided to sell a digital product.. and then.. what happened?

Well I focused on more than 1 thing. Thanks to taking college courses in high school, I was almost in my 3rd year to get a Computer Engineering degree, but also 1 more Calculus II class away from failing out of the Engineering College. PS: I hate math where I don’t count money.

WHY FAILING? Well, as I started to learn more about what my REAL WORLD WORK and my REAL WORLD PAY was going to be, I quickly shifted my eyes back to that Internet Marketing book. Making $150,000 a year for 60 hours a week was NOT my idea of fun. Making $150,000 a year from a 4 hour work week however.. was!

This is where I learned my FIRST RULE for success. Focus on one thing for success, and two things for failure.

So it’s ’10, going into ’11 and I’ve lost my full-ride scholarship. My parents expressing their anger, stop paying for my rent, I almost instantly go in over my head in credit card debt, with no job, no degree and no visible way out. I had nothing. I was nothing. My future was so bright, and in an instant it turned into the darkest moments I ever faced. Even when I think about that moment…

That moment. That’s when I reached for something inside, even though I felt nothing was there. For what seemed like hours, I sat in the darkness of my living room at 4 in the morning. And just as the sun broke the horizon, something whispered in my ear.. if you want to be smart broke, be an engineer. If you want to be dumb rich..

I immediately shot up with the sun and started frantically writing 10 ideas I could sell online IN THE NEXT 24 HOURS. I took what I learned and within 2 days I got my 1st success with eBay marketing. Back then, I sold what was known as “game saves”. They were just files that unlocked game items, levels and cheat codes. The 1st day I sold well over a dozen, with a $3 profit a pop. The next week, I sold 100. By Day 30, I started selling 100+ each and every day, and it went on like this till I topped off with hiring my good friend Daniel Smith. We would sit there for hours, just packing and shipping these game saves off to people. Laughing, saying, where in-the-hell was all this money before?!?! We just thought how we were kids doing a mail-room job, getting paid what a lawyer does. It was literally the good life, just like Mr. Killes said!

Long story short, I signed up people in droves, moved onto different industries to see where I could make more, and finally landed back into email. Now, I evangelize the platform. It’s the best way to 10X your business – I can’t think of any easier way. And this is after 10+ years of trial & error talking..

I’ve failed and spun my wheels, I’ve succeed and then lost it all, I’ve really only lived an amazing life once I got into email marketing though. Everything else paid the bills and let me have some fun money, but email.. hahahahahaha! No comparison…

How to Have Happy Email Subscribers Forever

If you work in the business of marketing products or if you have your own product that you need to market, there is no better way to do so than email marketing. Email marketing allows you to integrate several different aspects of both analog and digital marketing and makes it easier for you to access a wider range of customers.

Through the use of email marketing, you can carve a niche for yourself and your products and allow yourself to maintain a sense of longevity when it comes to your business or the products you are marketing.

Whether you are just starting out or are experienced in this area, learning the basics of email marketing can be a great way to get yourself going and achieve some success. For old hats, it can be a good way to refresh their minds and adopt a different viewpoint, and for people who are newer in this field, learning the basics is the right way to start.

Provided below are the basics and fundamentals of email marketing. Applying these rules can enable you to reach a wide audience for all of your products.

The Fundamentals

There is a step-by-step process to email marketing after which there are a number of different techniques you can apply in order to get the best result possible. The very first thing that you are going to have to do is get your customers to opt in. This would allow you to get their details, thus enabling you to contact them by email.

Once an email address has been received, it is imperative that you send a welcome email. Don’t just start marketing out of the blue, as this would make your customers feel harassed, which might put them off your products or services. Starting off with a welcoming vibe can allow you to get the right kind of beginning to your working relationship with potential customers, as it would portray you as friendly and welcoming and would help customers feel humanized instead of objectified.

Upon sending the email to welcome your new customers and clients, you now need to get to know each and every one of them. There is a technique you can follow by using the word EMAIL as an abbreviation. Within the word “EMAIL” is all that you are going to need to know.

1. E for Encouraging Engagement

When you start corresponding with a potential customer via email, it is crucial that you engage with them frequently. This will establish an excellent working relationship between you and your target market. Once regular contact has been established, encouraging your customers to engage with you can allow them to feel like they always have your ear if they need it. Being open to any complaints or queries that people have can help improve your image in their eyes, which is important if you want them to keep going for your product or service. If you do not engage them or encourage them to engage with you, are going to be left with a bitter customer who feels like you simply do not care about them, which will have a serious impact on any potential success your marketing techniques might have.

Try to set up a schedule for this. You can do so by setting a little time aside to check and respond to emails, and if your customers have not already contacted you, you need to make it a point to ask them if everything is alright. Make your engagements as interesting as they can possibly be, and always remember that your customer may just be a target for you, but they are actual people with real feelings. Keep this in mind and you can use it to help make your marketing even more effective than it would be otherwise.

2. M for Mail Often

One thing to keep in mind is that you can’t just randomly email your customers whenever you want to market your product. You need to bury the marketing underneath some nice, friendly emails that you send 1-3 times a day. Asking your customer how they are doing is a great way to start this off, but you also need to add a personalized touch to your email marketing. After all, if you were getting emails from someone who was just trying to market a product, it is highly unlikely that you would actually want to respond. The chances are that you would probably just want to get rid of this person because they would start to become annoying.

Don’t email too frequently, however. It can be easy to fall into this trap, but you need to give your customer some space as well. If your target has not replied to an email, you need to wait a while before asking for a response or else they might end up getting annoyed by you. All in all, it’s always better to tread the middle path, as this adheres to neither of the extremes that you are trying to avoid.

A good way to engage with your customers in an interesting way is to relate a story of something that happened to you over the course of your day. This is a great technique because it would allow you to get your customer invested in your life in some way, which can prove to be a useful tool when you start to market to them. The key to a successful email marketing campaign is personalizing your service and allowing your customers to feel comfortable enough with you that they can discuss anything at all.

3. A for Ally

The best way to unite people who are at odds is to provide them with a common foe. Trying circumstances can make anyone allies, no matter how different these people are. In order to relate to your target market, you need to make yourself their ally when you market to them. You need to turn yourself into an important person for their business lives, which would be extremely difficult to do if you avoid this technique.

There is a very easy way you can make yourself your customer’s ally. The best way to do this is to create a common enemy for all of you. You are offering a service or product, and there will be a lot of competitors for this product or service. You can try and get customers who have used these services and have not had satisfactory results, and you can get on their side! This is a great way to make your customers feel comfortable with you, as they would feel like they have someone on the inside of the industry who understands their pains and frustrations and can help them rationalize their annoyances and emotions.

If you really want your customers to love you, the best way to do so is to be their friend who knows how bad other companies are and can help them out with. This is more palatable for the people you are pitching to.

4. I for Include ONE Call to Action per Email

This is one of the most important parts of any email marketing campaign. The ultimate purpose of your campaign is, after all, to sell things. Getting on your customer’s good side is a great thing to do – in fact, it’s essential to the success of your campaign) – but at the end of the day, you are going to need to sell, and a call to action is really the best way to do this.

A call to action can be anything, such as a link to the shop you are promoting with clickable text that says “Buy Now.” You can also have a call to action that would give your customers the chance to subscribe to a social media account for the product you are marketing or the company you are marketing it for.

However, the most important thing you are going to have to keep in mind is that you can only include one call to action and no more. Having multiple calls to action can confuse your customer and would make it highly unlikely that they would be interested in whatever it is that you are trying to market. The best thing to do is to select the most important action you need them to perform, such as buying your product, and just adding that. Any more than that would, in fact, mess up the layout of your email, which is the final part of this EMAIL acronym that you should follow.

5. L for Layout, Length and Link Tracking

You need to make sure that the layout you provide to your customers is one that would make them feel comfortable and relay the information you are trying to present in a neat fashion.

Visually, your layout needs to have paragraphs; you can’t have a single block of text because this can be a real chore to read. Try to make the text portion of your email as concise as possible. Talking on and on about your product can be an enormous turnoff and can make it impossible for you to get your message across in an adequate fashion.

Your email also needs to have some graphic elements such as pictures and the like. They can brighten up your email and will make your customer more susceptible to your marketing techniques.

Apart from the visuals, one important aspect of your layout is the links you are going to provide. Links will show your customers where to go in a manner that is subtle and would not demand anything of them. Remember, this is not at all the same as the call to action. You need to provide a single call to action, and the rest of the links can just be hyperlinks. Make sure these links trace back to an area that you want your customers to go to, which would make them even more likely than before to buy whatever it is that you are trying to sell to them.

How to Approach Email Marketing

A good way to approach email marketing is to think of it like dating. When you date someone, you don’t expect them to be the one putting in all of the effort. If you want to date properly, you are going to have to put in some effort as well, which would involve you making your customers feel like you care about them.

The important thing to keep in mind is that your customers know that you are a marketer, so they are going to approach everything you say and do with a pinch of salt and a great deal of skepticism. Hence, if you want your customers to actually trust you, it’s important that you treat everything like a date.

A good way to ensure that your correspondence with your target market remains a two-way street is to share a story about yourself and encourage your customers to tell them stories of their own. This would help maintain a personal connection and make you seem more trustworthy in your potential customer’s eyes.

Properly paying attention while they are telling their stories is also a great way to ensure they feel like you truly care about them. Similarly, when you tell them a story about yourself, you should always try to make it something personal. Go for something as personal as you are comfortable with and then, sit back and marvel at just how well your customers end up responding to you.

All in all, you need to try your best not to approach email marketing like it’s just another part of your job. Doing so can take away the personalized approach you need in order to set yourself apart from the pack. If you truly want your customers to take you seriously, you are going to have to change the reputation of email marketing.

Recently, it has begun to be thought of as just a soulless way for companies to send out mass emails of promotion that have no heart to them whatsoever. You have the chance to change that. The market is open, and your chance is now! By using these techniques, you can become the best of the best and sell the products your company has to offer.

The golden rule is that you keep it personal and treat your customers like people, not just targets you have to meet.

Some Tips to Use

The rules that you have to follow are all well and good, but you need some tips as well in order to make the most of your email marketing techniques. Some tips that you can follow are provided below:

Fulfill Your Promises

One of the most common techniques that people use to entice people into signing up for an email marketing scheme is to offer something in return. If you want your target market to take you seriously, you are going to have to give them what they were promised.

Failing to do so can make you look bad and would make all of the effort you put into obtaining emails and leads a futile exercise in the long run. On the other hand, fulfilling your promises would ironically surprise your customers as most of them would not be expecting to actually get any benefits by giving you their email due to the poor reputation that the marketing industry has.

Be Visual – Don’t Use Just Text

Text emails are extremely boring and probably are not going to get much of a response at all. If you want your emails to get proper traction, you are going to have to use a mixture of texts, images, and links. Images are important because they can help you get your message across without having to resort to blocks of text.

Another thing that you can do is use infographics. They are absolutely wonderful because they can help you get your point across in a much better way than plain text.

As for links, they are important because they allow you to give your customers the opportunity to actually see what you are selling rather than relying on you to give them information about it.

Focus on Readability

One important aspect of readability is the font you use. Using a sans serif font is essential because it can help you declutter your email and make it seem a lot neater. The color of the font matters as well. Dark gray is the best color to choose, as it is sober and subtle and will not take anything away from the information you are trying to present. Whatever you do, avoid colored fonts like the plague! Bright-colored text can be really off putting and distracting and can take a lot away from the message you are trying to convey.

Don’t Make Your Customer Feel Bound

Just like in dating, it’s no longer fun if you feel obligated to do something.  You have to add an unsubscribe link somewhere in your email so that a potential customer has the ability to unsubscribe to if they choose to. Not only is this legal, ethical marketing. Doing so will help your audience see that you respect them, spamming laws and it will and make them feel that they have the power to stop all contact with you if they so wish. This transparency will help them get comfortable with you and will increase the chances of them spending more money.

Get to Know You’re Subscribers!

Sure it’s fun to share your stories with others, but the real magic begins when you engage your audience!  The first thing you want to do is get your subscribers used to clicking a link inside your email.

Only use 1 link per email. That will get them used to taking action and clicking through which end up earning you more money will down the road.

The second thing you want to do is to get to know more about your audience and their journeys.  Make sure that throughout your email sequences that you are getting your subscribers to take action.  I find the best ways to do this are: by asking them to reply back to a simple question at the end of an email, to take a poll or quiz, to watch a video, or click on a link. Spending time getting to know you audience helps you craft better emails, content & products to solve the exact problems they’re experiencing.

The Benefits of Email Marketing

It is important to know the benefits of email marketing so that you can apply your talents accordingly. Some major benefits of email marketing are provided below:

1. Allows for Highly Targeted Customers

If you truly want to get your products some traction, you are going to have to target the right people. By email marketing, you can get to customers who would be genuinely interested in your product and would be as likely as possible to buy it since only those who are interested will give you their emails. By adding a personal touch to your marketing, you can also ensure that each potential customer gets the right treatment, thereby enabling you to tackle niches that would otherwise be inaccessible.

2. Easy to Scale Up

One of the biggest problems with marketing is that it is quite difficult to measure success. This means that you are often not going to be able to give your bosses a good answer if they ask you whether you are getting any success with what you are attempting to do. One of the biggest advantages that come with email marketing is that you have proof of your success right there. You have customers responding to emails and customers buying products from the links you provided. This can make it very easy to experiment with new things and try to find a technique that would be right for you. It is a great way to innovate and try to move the industry forward as a whole.

3. Easy to Integrate Social Media

With social media, you get a great opportunity to further market the products you have been assigned. If you integrate social media into emails, which is a much more intimate and personal manner of correspondence, you can entice your customers into sharing your products with others, thereby enabling you to expand your consumer base. All you need to do in order to integrate social media is add a few links here and there. Since social media is so easy to share anyways, you would basically just have to wait for your customers to do the rest for you.

4. Cost Effective

Spending money is something that nobody likes to do. There are really expensive ways of marketing, but with email marketing, you can start small, build as you go and by doing so eschew all of this extra overhead costs compared to many other forms of marketing. Email marketing cuts down on costs because you only need a laptop, internet connection, email and link tracking services.   Thereby cutting a lot of costs and enabling products to be publicized even on the tightest of budgets. This is a major benefit of email marketing that can truly change the way you approach making money online in general.
