Our Child Is Lost

From the moment of conception

A miracle from two entwined

Born into possibilities

No one knew at that time

Growing from helpless

Independent of the two

Transformed from our miracle

Giving the devil his due

Reaching the age of three

All has now calmed

Returning to us our angel

But we question for how long?

Time has now passed by a decade

Our Childs disguise now worn

Once more a peek into the future

In doubt our hearts are torn

Though with perfect sight we turn a blind eye

We hear nothing from convenient deafness

At this point no thought is a good thought

Upon her eighteenth birthday we set her free

Slowly the years turn into decades

Her voice no longer familiar to us

Only old pictures for remembrance

Realization that our child is lost

I think often of my child

Consumed by the world at large

Sending letters as breadcrumbs

Stepping stones to lead her home

Another decade too fast to pass

All mail returned in stacks

Looking at my spouse

I shake my head and sigh aloud

Five decades in total has now passed

My wife falls ill

Only one wish before she dies

To see once more her little girl

For her smile she vies

I search high and low

Hiring three investigators on the go

To search all areas upon the earth

To return to us our child from birth

They return to no avail

My spouse is going the doctors tell

So out of my broken heart

I hire a stranger to play our Childs part

My imitation daughter shows up on cue

My spouse so happy yet I remain so blue

Upon her sad face shows up a remembered smile

One last breath

No lingering regret

I now lay upon a stranger’s bed

Nurses at my beck and call

Then two enter my room

One large and one small

A familiar face I begin to ball

I recognize my child that was lost

Not by the elder but the image of the tot

A mirror reflection of a picture from days lost

I softly said with my last gasping breath

What you will reap is what onto us you brought

I left all that I own to my grand daughter

Giving her all the means to prevail

Though a second generation

She will become lost

Now another will feel our hell

Next to my wife I am buried

Matching head stones to reunite

Between us lies a little stone with simple words

Our child is lost

Never again to see her light
