Born White Between The Lines

Steve Lake

Upon the day I was born

I was the hue of a pink rose

Within hours I begin to fade

This was all to my dismay

Too young to worry

After all I was the life of the party

Eating and drinking

And a full diaper of surprise

The years passed quickly

As a chameleon I constantly turn

Always different as the days

My hue never stays

In age I become aware

We are all different but normally I wouldn’t care

But others around me remain in a constant hue

When all I do is change from brown to pink to white

Colors that spew

I was born white between the lines

I guess you could call me a color person

After all I yield many colors

And when the description fit

You wear it

Now from years of experience

I always put in print

From my driver license to credit applications

From employment forms to legal forms

Again and again I write

White between the lines

I look for the choice of colored person

I look for the choice of rainbow man

But still no proper choice

I now randomly check or write in the box

The color of my day

Confusion over my hue

I research my ancestry

Not only was I surprised

Now my color was in disguise

My world would be more simplified

If I wasn’t white between the lines

No more disguises of hues

If I could just check the box or write in

An American like you
